Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) I have noticed here

Hello! Are you new? I am still pretty new, myself. Mumsnet can be hard to navigate.
Here are some commonly asked questions I’ve seen asked on the feminist board, with links to threads. Please have a look at these, as many of the regular posters will have likely covered your question in-depth before. I am hoping they don't mind me creating another basic FAQ, that can hopefully be added-to. Remember that this board is not a monolith (even though it might appear to be such), although the majority of posters do seem to have a clearly gender-critical slant, where feminism is centered around biological females. Centering females is also known as radical feminism - because the radical part refers to going back to the "root" of female oppression (which in such feminist theory is the female body).
These FAQs will be heavily related to the "transgender debate" because that is a hot topic right now.

What is the definition of "trans" that is typically used in this forum?
It is Stonewall's:
An umbrella term to describe people whose gender is not the same as, or does not sit comfortably with, the sex they were assigned at birth.
Trans people may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms, including (but not limited to) transgender, transsexual, gender-queer (GQ), gender-fluid, non-binary, gender-variant, crossdresser, genderless, agender, nongender, third gender, two-spirit, bi-gender, trans man, trans woman, trans masculine, trans feminine and neutrois.
www.stonewall.org.uk/help-advice/glossary-terms#t

You will notice that it does not specify only individuals who have gender dysphoria (discomfort with their own body/sex), but includes cross-dressers and those whose feelings are fluid. This is different from the classical term "transsexual," which refers to people with a medical condition named "gender dysphoria," which can only be alleviated by permanently inhabiting the social role of the opposite sex and potentially undergoing medication and surgery in order to achieve this. So the current trans umbrella has been significantly widened and now includes people who have no discomfort with their bodies but simply "identify as" another gender.

It is worth remembering that the definition of "transitioning" now is also very loose. Stonewall defines it like this:
The steps a trans person may take to live in the gender with which they identify. Each person’s transition will involve different things. For some this involves medical intervention, such as hormone therapy and surgeries, but not all trans people want or are able to have this. Transitioning also might involve things such as telling friends and family, dressing differently and changing official documents.

So there is no set definition for transitioning. This could be as simple as wearing a different set of clothes, changing one's name or pronoun.

Under these definitions, the following people are to be considered fully women, just like any female:

DadDadDad

As you may know, Stonewall is a hugely influential and respected LGBTQ charity. As you have noticed, their definition of trans is NOT one which most of the general public is aware of, and if they were to be aware of, might question. And I would guess that most members of the general public are not aware of the fact that at least 80% of tranwomen have a penis and have no intention of changing that fact. And yet, we are accused of being transphobic if we say 'controversial' things like Transwoman are not women

Put more bluntly: No shit Sherlock

What is the terminology of this debate?
We've defined radical feminism, trans, transitioning, and transsexual already.
TRA = trans rights activist. Others may use trans activist (TA) or a variation thereof. This is to distinguish the fact that the speaker is not speaking about all trans people. Trans activists are a very vocal minority in this debate who are pushing specific ideas that seem to boil down to a common argument that biological sex doesn't really matter because it should always come second to a person's internal identity. These are the individuals pushing for self-ID.
MRA = men's rights activist. Tends to hold very anti-feminist views, and blames feminism for not focusing enough on men's issues.
Sex = biological sex as defined by a person's reproductive system (the trans activists will call this "assigned sex at birth"). On this board the majority of posters will use "male" and "female" to refer to biological sex ONLY, but do seek clarification if you are unsure
Trans woman = an individual of the male reproductive sex who identifies as a woman. Before the term was banned, these individuals were also called trans-identified males or TiM.
Trans man = an individual of the female reproductive sex who identifies as a man. Before the term was banned, these individuals were also called trans-identified females or TiF.
Non-binary = an individual of either sex who identifies as something other than a man or woman
TERF = trans-exclusionary radical feminist, a banned term on this board. Considered a slur (see question above), as it is typically only aimed at women, which comes with death/rape threats. Also a misnomer, as radical feminism does include trans men.
Truscum = an offensive (in my opinion) term against transsexual people who believe that one needs to have a condition called gender dysphoria and take meaningful steps to permanently live in the opposite gender role in order to be "trans"
gender = this usually refers to the social role attached to the sexes, typically expressed as masculine and feminine. This is understood to be a repressive system, as it forces individuals to conform to expected behaviours (e.g. women wear high heels, like glitter and are nurturing; men wear ties, like sports and are aggressive). However, be careful because people will throw around this word to mean a whole lot of different things.
gender identity = what a person feels like inside (whether they are a man, woman, or something else). There is much dispute over whether everyone has a "gender identity," although for trans people it seems clear that their identity does not match their sex.
GNC = gender non-conforming. A person who does not behave according to the expected stereotypes for their sex.
Lesbian = female homosexual. Although for some in this debate a lesbian is anyone who identifies as a woman internally and is sexually attracted to females. See Alex Drummond/Jane Fae.
