Best reusable straws

While the country took the admirable decision to ditch single-use plastic straws altogether in 2020, paper straw alternatives can soon turn to mush. For a sturdier and greener option, consider a reusable straw made from bamboo, silicone, stainless steel or glass.

Whether you slurp smoothies, drink iced coffee on the go, or you're trying to entice your little one to stay hydrated, you should find something in our roundup to fit the bill.

Here are the best reusable straws to buy in 2022.

Price £19 (10 straws) | Buy now from Amazon

"I have a selection of reusable straws and I love them. I have silicone and stainless steel ones. The stainless steel straws are my favourite because they come in different lengths and also different shapes - straight/bended" - Ilovecreamycoffee

When you switch between a few favourite bevvies, this colourful set of reusable, extra-long straws are just the ticket. The pack comes with eight silicone straws and two metal ones, which will cater for all your hot and cold beverage needs. Silicone straws work brilliantly for hot drinks as they won’t absorb the heat and metal straws will pretty much last forever as they aren't susceptible to rust - both can be bunged in the dishwasher after use. The straws also come with two cleaning straws and a snazzy purple pouch. The fact that you get variety and bright vibes all for under twenty quid make these come out on top.

2. Best budget reusable straws: VEHHE Metal Straw Stainless Steel Straws

VEHHE reusable straws

Price £3 (four straws) | Buy now from Amazon

"We use stainless steel ones as they are bomb proof and can go through the dishwasher" – Crayfishforyou

The reviews online are glowing for this set of four metal straws (made from top food-grade) and amazingly priced at under a fiver. You’ll even get a choice too – two extra-long straws for tall drinks and two bent straws for those that don’t like the rigidness of drinking through a straight one. These stainless steel straws are pretty sturdy and can last a lifetime as one Mumsnet user reminds us. You’ll get a handy brush to clean by hand if you prefer and a straw pouch to help keep order in the cutlery drawer. Should you buy a few packs? Probably!

3. Best silicone reusable straws: Softy Straws Reusable Straws

Softy Straws

Price: £27 (5 straws) | Buy now from Amazon

"Silicone, definitely. So much nicer to drink out of than metal - I often had the feeling I might damage my teeth on the metal ones, though I'm not sure that's a realistic fear or not" - Sniv

"We use silicone straws and just wash and reuse! Also have some glass straws, and a few metal ones, but the silicon are best, came with a little brush for cleaning" – whyismykid

When discussing the best materials for reusable straws on the Mumsnet forums, silicone gets a lot of praise and gets top marks for repeat use and for providing a generally nice experience and comfortable mouth feel. These soft straws are ace – they’re colourful, super flexible, won’t impart any unwanted tastes, are resistant to heat and suit whatever drinking mode you’re feeling. This set comes in fully recycled packaging with a straw squeegee for cleaning and is a safe option for kids. One Mumsnetter reminds us that due to their bendy nature, a silicone straw will struggle to pierce a drinks carton, but it’s something we are willing to overlook.

Key specs

  • Number of straws: Five
  • Material: Silicone
  • Length: 21 cm

4. Best bamboo reusable straws: Jungle Straws - Reusable Bamboo Drinking Straws

Jungle Straws

Price £5 (six straws) | Buy now from Amazon

"We use bamboo straws - you can wash them in the dishwasher. We bought four about five months ago and they're still going strong and they can be composted when they're done" – HerdofAntilop

These hand-crafted, fully organic bamboo straws are a stylish way to show off your environmental credentials. You’ll get five regular straws, as well as a larger one with a slightly pointed end (designed for fruit smoothies and milkshakes), a cleaning brush and box. Bamboo is tasteless, durable and the straws can be composted at the end of their life making these the ultimate in sustainable sipping. Everything is plastic-free and recyclable. You’ll be able to choose a hessian bag that comes in eight muted shades that will fit neatly in your bag when you’re next out having drinks. We’d advise keeping these out of the dishwasher in favour of a soapy sink wash as bamboo can deteriorate over time.

  • Number of straws: Six
  • Material: Organic bamboo
  • Length: 20cm

5. Best collapsible reusable straws: Reusable Metal Collapsible Drinking Straw

There is absolutely no need to use a disposable straw ever again. We think we’d opt for the rose gold after giving the variety of colours some thought.

6. Best glass reusable straws: Reusable Bent Glass Drinking Straws

Reusable Bent Glass Drinking Straws

Price £9 (12 straws) | Buy now from Amazon

"We have glass ones. They’re great and come out of the dishwasher sparkling clean. They came with a little cleaning brush but I’ve never had to use it"- justpoppy

In terms of being smooth and sturdy, these glass straws score full marks. This 12-pack of bent glass straws are made from shatter resistant glass and available in blue, orange, teal, green, pink and multi-coloured. Fans of the glass straw like for its hygienic feel as you can see instantly if it's clean through. On the downside, not everyone enjoys the clinking against the teeth you get when drinking from one. Though made from shatter resistant glass, we wouldn’t recommend it for children. Glass generally isn’t suitable for hot brews as it heats too rapidly. There’s a brush too if you spot any debris that needs loosening.

8. Best reusable straws for smoothies: ALINK Clear Glass Straws

ALINK Clear Glass Straws

Sometimes a wider straw is required to meet the needs of a thicker beverage. The ALINK glass straw is almost double the size of a standard straw at 10mm wide – ideal for those partial to a fruit smoothie or milkshake. The set includes four straws and a nylon cleaning brush. It has a thickness of 2mm to help prevent breakages, although we wouldn’t recommend it for little mouths as there is still breaking potential. Reviews confirm suitability for both hot and cold drinks, it's free of any toxic nasties and has a very attractive price tag.

Which material is best for reusable straws?

There are four main materials to explore when deciding which straw is best for your family:

Silicone: The silicone straw has many benefits. Its material is suitable for both hot and cold drinks, they’re affordable, often colourful, can last a long time with minimal care and feel pretty comfortable in the mouth. Their bendy and flexible nature make drinking relaxed, suitable for the kids, and a realistic choice if you want to take out with you as they can often be compressed. On the flip side their floppy ways won’t suit everyone.

Glass: Fans of the glass straw have lots of praise for its smooth and study nature. Their transparency ensures you can keep clean easily without worrying if little bits have become lodged, it’s a hygienic choice and your cold drinks won’t impart. On the downside, they can feel slightly unnatural in the mouth and the clinking against the teeth does put some people off. A complete no no for children as no matter how strong the glass is, there is always potential for breaks.

Bamboo: Bamboo is a completely biodegradable and plant-based material so an ideal choice for those that want a real natural option and to maintain strong eco-friendly habits. They are pretty robust and for those that don’t like to match, these straws will vary slightly in size due to their organic nature. These straws won’t transfer heat like a metal straw can so can facilitate cold and hot drinks, though some find them a bit scratchy. Bamboo can deteriorate over time so an old-fashioned soak is advised after use.

Stainless steel: Metal straws are our most durable material and can last a lifetime. They’ll also cope with being bunged in the dishwasher (especially if made from 18/10 food-grade), with no rust ever in sight, so are a popular choice. One drawback from this type is a metallic taste can plague the mouth afterwards, or the drink itself. Hot drinks are also off the menu with metal being very heat conductive and they can feel cold in the mouth. Children shouldn’t use them at all due to their rigid nature and size and potential for injury.

How do you clean reusable straws?

Cleaning brushes come with all of our top picks to make cleaning in between sips an easy task. Straws made from stainless steel (in particular 18/10 stainless steel) can be thrown in the dishwasher time and time again without facing any rust issues. Straws made from bamboo more commonly may deteriorate over time if exposed daily to a machine wash. It’s better for this type to soak in warm, soapy water to remove any dry bits, before cleaning with a brush and draining upright.

What are the best reusable straws to buy?

The Kitchen Up Regular Size Reusable Straws shine proudly in our top spot. These funky fluorescent straws are all different colours so will suit whatever the day’s mood. Their flexible, silicone material makes them a brilliant choice for all the family and there will be no rummaging through the kitchen drawers when the drink requests are in – this set also comes with additional stainless steel straws. You get two cleaning straws and even the pouch will inject the happy vibes. What a steal for under twenty quid.

How we chose our recommendations

Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out which reusable straws parents were recommending and had bought. We then did some research across the wider web, looking at which reusable straws had been featured in ‘best buy’ lists across websites, and what customer reviews said about them. Having collated all that information, we then narrowed our list down to the top reusable straws on the market.
