Choosing the best breastfeeding pillow can make all the difference to your whole feeding experience - as a mum-of-three who spent a collective 40+ months breastfeeding, I found mine indispensable (so much so I bought three!) Here's our guide to the best nursing pillow UK 2026.

Breastfeeding can be an emotionally complex time, particularly in those first few weeks after birth, and choosing the best breastfeeding pillow for you can make all the difference. By providing ergonomic support, a breastfeeding pillow should not only ensure your baby is in the best position for latching on correctly and nursing comfortably, it should also help ease back, neck or arm tension for you as you feed, making the whole process more calming for everyone.

A breastfeeding pillow (also known as a nursing pillow or boppy pillow) is typically shaped like a U, V or C, with some featuring wraparound fasteners to keep it in place. Once seated, it wraps around your front, side or arm to provide a comfortable, stable support cushion for your baby as they feed.

Best breastfeeding pillow shortlist: at a glance

Using one of the best breastfeeding pillows should help ensure that your baby is in the optimal position for breastfeeding and should relieve tension and pressure on your back, neck, shoulders and arms. Once you get the hang of it, it should also mean you’re able to have your hands free while your baby nurses, so you can grab a drink or scroll through your favourite social media platform or parenting website (mentioning no names here).

While some say that they’re not really a must-have buy, as a mum of three who breastfed all three of her kids for over a year each time, I found having a good breastfeeding pillow absolutely indispensable. So much so that when my second baby was born I bought a cheaper second one so I could have one upstairs for nap and/or bedtime feeds and one downstairs for every other feed. I also bought a smaller travel pillow for use on holiday or at grandparents’ houses to save carting the larger feeding pillow around.

How we chose the best breastfeeding pillows

There are a lot of breastfeeding pillows out there, so we’ve taken a deep dive into the Mumset forums to discover which ones our 8-million-strong network of UK parents recommends. We’ve also conducted independent reviews with our carefully-selected panel of breastfeeding UK mothers and consulted maternity experts including experienced midwife and breastfeeding expert Zoe Watson to find out what the best breastfeeding pillow should offer.

Breastfeeding pillows can be a great tool for helping you get into a comfortable breastfeeding position when you're learning the ropes. They can be particularly helpful if you still feel a little uncomfortable from the birth, as they provide additional support.

Scoring full marks across the board with our breastfeeding parent-tester Bethan for comfort, back support, practicality and overall value for money, this ergonomic C-shaped breastfeeding pillow from Hippychick takes the top spot in our listing, and rightfully so.

Having used sofa cushions when breastfeeding her first child, Bethan said that using the Hippychick made a huge difference to her feeding experience with her second-born, in terms both of breastfeeding and bottle feeding.

"I'd say it’s made a very positive difference to feeding and allowed me to feel a little more hands-free to drink that much needed coffee or enjoy a 10 minute scroll during feeds while baby stays in a good position."

At just £40, the Hippychick is a great price point, and we love the straps which allow for optimal positioning as well as easy transport.

I used this pillow to feed two of my three babies and found it a huge help - it offers good, firm support under the baby and meant I could feed more comfortably than if I were to use regular cushions. It's super cheap too!

Our verdict

If you're looking for a good breastfeeding pillow which offers plenty of support for breastfeeding but don't want to spend more than £14, you can't go far wrong with this basic V-shaped pillow from Kinder Valley.

I used this very same pillow as a second/spare breastfeeding pillow when my second child was born and while it was not as supportive or mouldable as my original pillow (which is sadly no longer available but very similar to the Niimo pillow you'll find listed below) I still found it extremely useful. The V-shape fits easily around your waist, the inner filling provides good support for your baby and the cover can be removed and washed easily.

When my third child was born 21 months after my second, I continued to use this pillow from day one and although eventually the seam of the cover did split, this was after several years of use. Not bad for £14!

It is expensive but I use it every day, throughout the day and night, so I think it is good value for money. It's supportive, adaptable and comfortable to use, and I would absolutely recommend it to others. In fact I've already recommended it to a cousin and she bought one and loves it!

Reviewed by Mumsnet editor Jenny Wonnacott: Read our in-depth bbhugme Nursing Pillow review

From the makers of everyone's favourite breastfeeding pillow, the bbhugme Nursing Pillow offers the best adjustability for multiple feeding positions. Thanks to the wraparound design, the super-mouldable microbead filling and the two 'pebble' fastenings which secure the pillow at either end, the bbhugme can be adjusted to fit around you however you choose to feed.

Just like with the pregnancy pillow, the bbhugme nursing pillow features a super-soft, washable cover in a variety of designs and it comes with an eco-friendly travel bag too for ease of transportation.

It's a little on the pricey side at £85, so it's worth keeping an eye out for deals or checking secondhand marketplace sites if you'd rather not splash out.

Our verdict

Developed by a team of breastfeeding mothers and lactation experts, the My Brest Friend pillow offers bespoke support for new mums with a flat, firm cushion, wraparound design and integrated back support.

Designed to eliminate the gap which sometimes forms between traditionally-shaped breastfeeding pillows and your waist, My Brest Friend fits snugly against the user and can be adjusted accordingly. We particularly like the back rest which helps maintain good positioning, support and posture, and it fits neatly in between most armrests too.

It's a little pricey, but with several rave reviews on Mumsnet and elsewhere, this is certainly a breastfeeding pillow worth considering.

Our verdict

There's a lot to like about this C-shaped breastfeeding pillow from Niimo - and not just its affordable price tag. Available in a variety of fun designs, this pillow offers an ergonomic support to raise your baby to the optimum breastfeeding position. While it doesn't have the wraparound fastening or adaptability features of the bbhugme and the Hippychick, for many mums it does the trick well enough.

Like most of the pillows on our list, you can also used it for tummy time and as a cocoon for your baby when they're learning how to sit up.

While my own favourite breastfeeding pillow is no longer available to purchase, this particular pillow is the closest match I can find, and while I can't vouch personally for the Niimo, I found the C-shape and polyester filling of my own breastfeeding pillow more than enough to see me through 40+ months of breastfeeding.

Best breastfeeding pillow for C-section mums

What we like
  • Added 'security fence' for extra support, safety as well as discretion

  • Fastens around waist for non-slip feeding

  • Ergonomic design made with posture and tension-relief in mind

  • Good price

What we don't like
  • Security fence makes it more bulky than a lot of breastfeeding pillows

  • Needs time to expand when first arrives

RRP: £50 | Type of pillow: C-shaped | Cover material: 100% Cotton | Inner filling: 100% Polyester

Our verdict

Taking the award for best breastfeeding pillow for C-section mums is this versatile, supportive pillow from US brand Momcozy. Every feature of this pillow - from the adjustable straps to the widened sides - has been made with the mother's comfort in mind, and this is particularly important for those recovering from a c-section.

"Nursing pillows can be an excellent idea for people who have given birth by c-section," explained midwife Zoe Watson. "They provide extra support and help avoid putting pressure on the healing incision. When choose a nursing pillow, look for one that offers firm, comfortable support to keep the baby at the right height for feeding without straining your arms, shoulders or back."

The stand-out feature of this breastfeeding pillow from wearable breast pump experts Momcozy is the added 'security fence' which provides an added level of support along your baby's back to prevent them rolling away. It also provides an extra shield between you and the rest of the room - which is always useful for those early weeks of frequent new baby visitors.

Like with the Hippychick and the bbhugme, the Momcozy features a wraparound fastening feature for added non-slip stability. There are also specially widened sides for extra arm support in direct response to feedback from mothers.

Best breastfeeding pillow for travel

RUGUIES Nursing Pillow

What we like
  • Reasonably priced

  • Includes a travel bag

  • Has added benefit of a head nest for newborns, can be removed for older babies

What we don't like
  • Not as supportive as other pillows

  • No wraparound stability

  • Can get a bit warm in the summer months

Key specs

RRP: £14 | Type of pillow: Arm pillow | Cover material: 100% Cotton | Inner filling: Polyester

Our verdict

Let's face it, as useful as breastfeeding pillows can be, they aren't small and one thing we can all agree on is that taking your baby out and about - even if just for the day - requires a lot of stuff. Packing your breastfeeding pillow will probably fall fairly low on the priority list, especially if boot space is at a premium, so finding a portable alternative can be a great idea.

Although this isn't the exact same pillow I chose, I found an very similar arm pillow a great option for breastfeeding when away from home. Easy to slip on and off and small enough to pack in my changing bag, it offered an adaptable cushion for my baby's head for easy feeding on the go.

This intuitive arm pillow from RUGUIES not only comes with a convenient travel bag, it also features an anti-reflux pillow designed to better position your newborn's head, and this can be removed once your baby is older.

You absolutely can BF twins but you need good support, especially with an older one to manage, whilst you're setting up your supply. Find the BF twins Facebook group (Kathyryn Stagg does Facebook live sessions which are brilliant), get a good pillow (Peanut and Piglet was superb for me).

Our verdict

If you want to tandem feed your twins then this cushion could prove invaluable. It’s been designed by a twin mum and has lots of features to make breastfeeding two babies as comfortable as possible.

It has a back support to keep you in an upright position when feeding and also gives you high support which is important if you’ve had a caesarean section.

It’s not exclusively for breastfeeding and can also be a great way of bottle feeding your twins at the same time too. If you are breastfeeding, it’s sturdy and thick enough for you to go hands-free once your babies are latched and feeding well. While it's easily the most expensive breastfeeding pillow on our list, we like the added back support and the fact you can flip the pillow around once your twins are around five months so they're not kicking against the sofa as they feed.

Do I really need a breastfeeding pillow?

It really depends on whether it's something you find useful or not. For me - and for our parent-tester Bethan, who reviewed the Hippychick Nursing Pillow - I found my breastfeeding pillows a huge help for feeding my babies and exponentially more comfortable and intuitive than regular cushions or pillows. But, when I didn't have it with me (and there were plenty of times where I'd have to feed while out and about) I was still able to breastfeed just fine. Like with nappy bins and baby bath tubs, toddler beds and potty training pants, it's one of those items which often divides opinion on Mumsnet as to whether you really need one, and really it comes down to personal preferences. If it makes your parenting life easier - and it certainly made mine easier - then yes. If you're able to feed just as comfortably without one, then no.

I'm not one to spend on unnecessary items but I really liked my breastfeeding pillow. It's less squishy than a normal pillow or cushion so supports the baby better.

Are breastfeeding pillows necessary?

While a breastfeeding pillow isn't strictly necessary for successful breastfeeding, they can certainly be very helpful when it comes to positioning the baby correctly and providing you with good support for optimal posture.

"Breastfeeding pillows can be a great tool for helping you get into a comfortable breastfeeding position when you're learning the ropes. They can be particularly helpful if you still feel a little uncomfortable from the birth, as they provide additional support," says Midwife and Infant Feeding Specialist Zoe Watson.

Can breastfeeding pillows help with positioning for feeding?

While many a Mumsnetter says they used regular sofa cushions or bed pillows to help support and boost their baby for feeding, a good breastfeeding pillow is specially designed with positioning in mind. I certainly found no comparison between when I used a regular sofa cushion for feeds and when I used my C-shaped breastfeeding pillow.

"I got the c shape nursing pillow and have used it loads with DS1. I used it for breastfeeding and I found that he would sleep on there (supervised of course) and that was the only place he would sleep if he was not held. I also used it for tummy time for DS1 and when he was sitting up, I put it in front of him when he was sitting in the corner of the corner sofa and I put toys in front of him so he could reach them and when he was sitting on the floor I put it behind him so when he fell he would fall on the nursing pillow. Before DS1 was born I used it whilst pregnant as support on my back." -Advice from Mumsnet user JugglingMum17

According to midwife and breastfeeding expert Zoe Watson, "A breastfeeding pillow can be a helpful tool for finding a comfortable breastfeeding position, especially in the newborn phase. They can be particularly handy if you've had a c-section birth or are breastfeeding multiples for extra support."

Can a breastfeeding pillow help with posture/ease tension for a breastfeeding mother?

Yes, absolutely! A breastfeeding pillow can raise the baby to the right level to support the breastfeeding person in getting the baby into a comfortable position to latch onto the breast without compromising their own comfort or posture.

-Zoe Watson - Midwife, Nurse and Infant Feeding Specialist

What are the important things to consider when choosing a nursing pillow?

"When choosing a breastfeeding pillow, it's essential to consider several factors:

  • Ensure the pillow fits comfortably around your body and provides support for your neck and shoulders.

  • It should be firm enough to safely support your baby and provide good support but also soft and cosy for your little one to be comfortable.

  • The pillow should also be versatile, allowing for different breastfeeding positions or bottle feeding.

  • Some have additional features, such as being suitable for a baby to have tummy time or specially designed for twins.

  • Make sure it's the right size to position your baby at the correct level for breastfeeding and opt for one with a removable, easy-to-clean cover for added convenience."

-Zoe Watson - Midwife, Nurse and Infant Feeding Specialist

Are breastfeeding pillows safe?

"When selecting a breastfeeding pillow, safety concerns include ensuring the pillow provides firm support without being too soft, as this could affect posture and comfort during feeding. It's important to choose pillows made from hypoallergenic materials to avoid skin irritation and to select options with breathable fabrics to prevent overheating. The pillow should also have a removable, washable cover for hygiene, and small detachable parts like buttons or zippers should be avoided as they can be a choking hazard."

Always ensure the pillow is correctly sized for your body and remains stable during use to prevent strain or discomfort.

-Zoe Watson - Midwife, Nurse and Infant Feeding Specialist

Is it safe for a baby to nap on a breastfeeding pillow if they are supervised?

"It's generally not recommended for a baby to nap on a breastfeeding pillow, even if they are supervised. While a breastfeeding pillow is designed to provide support during feeding, it is not intended for unsupervised use or as a sleep surface.

"Babies can sometimes shift or slide into an unsafe position on a pillow, increasing the risk of suffocation. It's safest to lay the baby on a firm, flat surface, such as a cot or Moses basket, for naps, where they can sleep in a safe position. If you need to set the baby down for a brief rest, always ensure they are in a safe and secure environment."

-Zoe Watson - Midwife, Nurse and Infant Feeding Specialist

Are nursing pillows a good idea for post C-section mothers? If so, what should they look for in a nursing pillow?

"Yes, nursing pillows can be an excellent idea for people who have given birth by c-section, as they provide extra support and help avoid putting pressure on the healing incision. When choosing a nursing pillow, look for one that offers firm, comfortable support to keep the baby at the right height for feeding without straining your arms, shoulders, or back. "

-Zoe Watson - Midwife, Nurse and Infant Feeding Specialist

A good pillow should be adjustable to fit your body and help you maintain a relaxed position, reducing the risk of discomfort.

-Zoe Watson - Midwife, Nurse and Infant Feeding Specialist

Can breastfeeding twins be made easier with the use of a breastfeeding pillow?

"Twin parents often report that they find breastfeeding cushions a helpful tool for feeding their babies. However, the key is getting plenty of professional breastfeeding support to ensure the babies are latching correctly, feeding is going well, and the breastfeeding parent feels comfortable."
