A collage of sex toy storage boxes and bags from Lovehoney, Smile Makers and Unbound

Storing your favourite vibrator correctly is essential for both their longevity and hygiene. Our Mumsnet users have cited easy access as a priority, while others were keen on ultimate discretion. Fortunately, there are various sex toy storage options available to suit different needs, and it's a good idea to invest in one.

As sex expert Annabelle Knight from Lovehoney explains, "proper sex toy storage is something many people neglect, even though it really is crucial to prevent the spread of infection, and to aid the longevity of sex toys… When sex toys are stored together, and not stored separately in clean bags or boxes in a cool, dry place, you create the optimal environment for cross-contamination and infection."

Beyond the health implications, proper storage also extends the life of your toys. Annabelle adds, "many people leave their sex toys in bed with them, or chuck them away into a drawer… Cleaning your sex toys and storing them in separate, clean boxes or bags can prevent the build-up of residue and bacteria, preventing material degradation and general wear and tear."

1

Best overall sex toy storage

Lovehoney Lockable Sex Toy Case Large, £20

What we like
  • Discreet

  • Can store lots of toys

  • Lockable

What we don't like
  • Could be larger

Key specs

Price on writing: £20 | Size: 14 x 7.5 x 2.75 inches | Material: Hard Plastic, anti-bacterial lining | Colour: Black

Our verdict

With its lockable design, sturdy construction and ample space, this lockable box by Lovehoney provides excellent protection for a variety of sex toys and accessories.

The case's adjustable dividers and mesh pocket keep items organised, and its unassuming design is ideal for travel. Great for when you’re on the move or want to keep your sex toys private at home.

It's also lined with antibacterial material to help keep your toys hygienic and clean between uses. Plus, the padlock is included for total security so you needn't worry about ordering a separate padlock like you do for others in this roundup.

Overall, it offers a great combination of security, practicality, and style, making it a must-have accessory for anyone looking to keep their toys protected and ready for pleasure.

2

Best discreet sex toy storage

What we like
  • Very discreet, looks like a wash bag

  • Plenty of room for 4-5 average sized toys

  • Lined with polyester, so it wipes clean with soap and water

  • Stylish

What we don't like
  • Only comes in pastel colour

Key specs

Price on writing: £20 | Size: 9"L x 6.7"W x 5.5"H | Material: Pleated polyurethane shell with polyester lining | Colour: Sea, violet

Our verdict

With two pastel designs to choose from, you'd be forgiven for mistaking Unbound's storage bag for a makeup or toiletries bag.

Created by the brand that brought us the Ollie wand, this particular storage bag has a soft structure with a double zip that's highly packable, and perfect for fitting in a suitcase or under your bed. There's also a bonus zippered pouch on top for storing smaller items like a charging chord, or a bullet vibrator.

It's compact in size, though, but will ensure discreet storage and privacy if you want to travel with your favourite toys. It will fly completely under the radar, in fact.

3

Best antibacterial sex toy storage bag

GIDDI UV Sterilizer Bag, £67

What we like
  • Automated rapid sanitising system

  • Travel safe

  • Cleans in three minutes!

  • Use to disinfect any other household items under 10”

What we don't like
  • A pricey storage option

Key specs

Price on writing: £67 | Size: 10"L x 5"W x 3"H | Material: Vegan leather | Colour: Black

Our verdict

Ever since the dawn of UV sterilising phone cases - thanks, pandemic - it was only a matter of time until the technology made its way into the sexual wellness industry. GIDDI is to thank for this, with their UV sterilising bag that's a sanitising device, travel bag, and storage unit all in one.

Admittedly, it's a high-tech piece of kit just to use for storing sex toys (with a price tag to match) but it's an excellent way of making sure your toys are kept in tip-top shape. Especially when it claims to kill 99.9% of all germs that may cause infection and disease.

Not only is it super practical to clean, but with its built-in power system it'll also charge your toys while doing so.

In a nutshell: this is a worthwhile investment if you want to keep your sex toys in tip top condition.

4

Best for wand massagers

Lovehoney Magic Wand Deluxe Soft Storage Case, £20

What we like
  • Perfect for storing wands specifically

  • Large in size

  • Really good value

  • Open base for discreet recharging

What we don't like
  • Quite conspicuous as wands are large

Key specs

Price on writing: £20 | Size: 14"L x 5.5"W x 3.5"H | Material: Faux leather | Colour: Black

Our verdict

Wand vibrators are a particular favourite with Mumsnet users, and one of mine too, admittedly. You can't go wrong with a good old' wand IMO, but they can be on the larger side - making them hard to store discreetly.

Thankfully, Lovehoney's massage wand deluxe storage case is just the thing you need if you wish to stash your wand.

Made of faux leather, it's stylish and portable, so you can keep your wand zipped up at home away from prying eyes or travel with it with ease. And on trips where you won't be taking your wand, it'd house your hair straighteners quite easily. Multifunctional, eh!

5

Best budget sex toy storage case

What we like
  • Machine washable (but...)

  • Discreet, stylish

  • Good for travel and home storage

  • A large case for several toys

What we don't like
  • Have to avoid intense scrubbing

  • Can only wash on hand wash setting in the machine

Key specs

Price on writing: £8 | Size: 27 x 13 x 12cm | Material: 12 oz cotton canvas

Our verdict

I've been a fan of Smile Makers ever since we collaborated with them at MNHQ to create The Whisperer. So, it comes as no surprise that Smile Maker's pleasure case has made its way into my roundup.

This particular case offers discreet storage - and doesn't look any different to a vanity case of makeup box. It's compact, practical and a lovely colour, and it's made with cotton canvas that can easily be chucked in the washing machine (on a handwash, though).

It's one of the largest sex toy storage options on this list, which is great for those of you with plenty of toys. In fact, the pleasure case has been designed to fit every sized vibrator Smile Makers offer.

Despite its large size, though, it's still a great option if you plan to travel with your toys, too. Like I said, it looks no different to any other travel case in your luggage.

6

Best silicone sex toy storage

Happy Rabbit Silicone Storage Case, £19

What we like
  • Wipe clean silicone

  • Cute design

  • Room for a small toy and your favourite lubricant

What we don't like
  • Not very discreet

Key specs

Price on writing: £19 | Size: 10 inches (l) x 4.75 inches (h) x 1.75 inches (d) | Material: Silicone | Colour: Black

Our verdict

This zippered silicone case from Happy Rabbit is a chic and practical storage solution for your sex toys. While it may not be as discreet as some other options in my roundup, its cute design does add a touch of style and its material means it sits somewhere between a sex toy bag and a hard case - but it does hold its shape!

Plus, the lockable zippers ensure total privacy, while the easy-to-clean silicone material makes hygienic storage easy.

It's only downside is that it's not exactly large. In fact, there are bigger options in this list. But if you're wanting something to house your favourite vibrator and lube without any fuss that you can use at home and while travelling, this is the one for you IMO.

How to choose the right storage for your sex toy?

We know from our Talk boards that some Mumsnet users love their sex toys (from butt plugs to wand vibrators to rabbits and suckers). The key to keeping them in tip-top shape, though, is making sure they’re clean and stored correctly when not in use.

Annabelle Knight says, "storing their sex toys together, unwashed, tossed into a drawer with other personal belongings" is one of the biggest mistakes people make. "Cleanliness is key for avoiding any build-up of bacteria and infection, and storing them separately in compartments in a cool, dry place can significantly improve the condition and lifespan of your toys."

Before storing, make sure all sex toys are wiped clean first. When considering where to store your sex toys, three concerns are central: the first being convenience, the second hygiene, and the third discretion. If you don’t plan on taking your toys on your travels, then you may want to look at some of the lockable box options offered in this list. If you’re keen to get your sex toys on the move, then pouches or a sex toy bag (even just a wash bag) might be a better option for you.

For smaller toys, something discreet that fits easily in a nightstand drawer or by your bedside may suit you best. If you’re travelling, consider something compact and secure that slips neatly into a suitcase without drawing attention.

How to clean your sex toys before storing them

Keeping sex toys clean before storage isn’t just about tidiness, it’s essential for preventing bacterial growth and reducing your risk of infection, including yeast infections.

Start by thoroughly washing your toy with warm water and a mild, unscented soap or a specialist sex toy cleaner. Pay extra attention to textured areas or seams where bacteria can hide. Make sure to remove any detachable parts and clean those separately. If your toy is waterproof, you can submerge it safely. Otherwise, use a damp cloth and avoid getting the battery or electrical components wet.

After cleaning, allow your toys to air dry completely. This step is crucial because storing a damp toy can encourage bacterial growth or even mould, especially in enclosed cases or pouches. Don't forget your chargers – while they don't need soap and water, they should be wiped down and kept dry and dust-free before being stored alongside your toys.

What to look for when choosing your sex toy storage

What sex toy storage option you go for depends in part on the type and amount of sex toys in your collection as well as other sex essentials you have, like condoms and your bottles of lube. Ensure it is big enough and convenient enough to suit your needs.

Annabelle suggests that "individual bags and boxes are a great way to prolong the lifespan of your individual toys, keeping them protected from other objects.” For larger collections, she recommends “large storage boxes or bags with separate compartments,” adding that “many boxes can easily be tucked away to become part of the furniture!"

Opt for easy-to-clean materials and consider hygiene features like anti-bacterial properties. If you plan to travel, look for compact and portable options.

What material should I choose for my sex toy storage?

When selecting a material for your sex toy storage, it is best to opt for non-porous materials like silicone, ABS plastic, or metal. These are easy to clean, resistant to bacteria buildup, and do not absorb odours or moisture.

Annabelle notes, "silicone toys should not be stored in direct contact with each other for extended periods, as they can deform or ‘melt.’ Using separate storage bags, or placing them in a well-ventilated container, or a bag with an antibacterial lining is recommended."

She also adds a warning: "Non-silicone materials used in sex toys can be more prone to off-gassing, which can even be detrimental to your health – making proper ventilation essential… In general, toys should be kept in clean, dry environments away from high heat or direct sunlight, which can damage the materials and promote bacteria or the growth of mould."
