Our verdict

Finding a mattress you actually look forward to getting into is oddly difficult. Especially once you hit the age where a bad night’s sleep doesn’t just mean feeling groggy the next day, but walking downstairs like you’ve spent the night folded into a deckchair.

And while mattress shopping now involves enough jargon to make your eyes glaze over, most people really want the same thing: something supportive, comfortable and not outrageously expensive.

That’s where the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress comes in. It’s the most affordable hybrid in Simba’s range, combining foam layers with springs, but without some of the bells and whistles you’ll find in the pricier Pro and Luxe models.

Our tester, Joshua Gluckman, spent several weeks sleeping on the mattress in a real home to see whether it actually lives up to the brand’s claims around comfort, support and temperature regulation. Importantly, he was already dealing with back pain and had been struggling with a mattress that felt too soft and unsupportive, so expectations were fairly high.

The mattress is designed to balance comfort, support and breathability at a lower price point

The good news is that the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress gets the basics right, and honestly, that’s probably why it works so well.

It’s supportive without feeling rigid, comfortable without swallowing you whole and breathable enough that Joshua didn’t spend the night kicking off the duvet in frustration. It also feels thoughtfully designed for everyday life, from the manageable weight to the removable cover.

If you want the ultra-luxury hotel mattress experience, you’ll probably end up looking further up Simba’s range. But for most people who simply want better sleep and fewer creaky mornings, this feels like a sensible investment rather than an overhyped one.

How we tested the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress

The Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress has been slept on for the last month by Joshua Gluckman, who’s an adult combination sleeper with existing back pain. The double mattress was used every night in a real home environment with neutral room temperatures.

Joshua assessed comfort, support, temperature regulation, motion isolation, ease of setup and overall day-to-day practicality. He also compared it directly to his previous mattress, which he described as “too soft and uncomfortable”.

Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress: what’s in the box?

Like most modern bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Simba Hybrid Essential arrives vacuum packed and rolled into a surprisingly compact cardboard box.

There’s still a slightly alarming moment where you wonder whether a full-sized mattress can possibly emerge from something roughly the size of a washing machine delivery, but within a few hours it expands into shape properly.

Inside the box you get:

  • The mattress itself

  • Basic setup instructions

  • Protective wrapping

Nothing fancy, but it all felt straightforward and well organised for Joshua.

How easy is it to set up the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress?

Thankfully yes. Joshua described the setup process as easy and said the mattress was reasonably simple to manoeuvre thanks to its manageable weight. That’s not always the case with hybrid mattresses, which can sometimes feel like trying to rotate a grand piano.

He also liked the removable cover, saying it made the mattress feel practical for real-world use rather than something impossibly precious.

As Joshua put it: “I enjoyed the experience from setting it up and the comfort of sleeping on it.”

Was there any off-gassing smell with the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress?

A little, but nothing dramatic. There was a slight smell when first unboxed, which is fairly common with compressed foam mattresses, but Joshua said it disappeared very quickly afterwards and didn’t cause any irritation or breathing issues.

That mirrors what we often see with hybrid mattresses generally. The smell tends to fade within a day or two, especially if the room is well ventilated.

Is the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress comfortable?

This was the area where the mattress performed strongest. Joshua rated comfort highly throughout the testing period and said he immediately noticed a difference compared to his old mattress.

“It is much better than my old mattress,” he said. “It feels more comfortable to sleep on and also I am less hot in bed.”

Importantly, Joshua also reported feeling less stiff when getting out of bed in the morning, which will matter to anyone waking up with the sort of lower back complaints that mysteriously appear once you’ve spent a few years existing as an adult.

The medium-firm feel seemed to suit his combination sleeping position particularly well. Joshua described the firmness level as “just right” and said he felt properly supported throughout the night.

How supportive is the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress?

For an entry-level hybrid, support was impressive. The Simba Hybrid Essential combines foam comfort layers with small Aerocoil springs designed to provide more responsive support than all-foam mattresses. In practice, Joshua found it supportive without feeling hard or clinical.

He specifically said the mattress felt “very supportive and not too warm”, which is quite a difficult balance to get right. Some firmer mattresses can feel excellent for posture but slightly joyless to actually sleep on. This one seems to avoid that problem.

There was also a noticeable improvement in stiffness compared to his previous mattress, suggesting the support layers were doing their job properly over time rather than just feeling comfortable initially.

Does the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress sleep hot?

One of the biggest complaints people have about foam mattresses is overheating. Especially if you’re already a warm sleeper, the wrong mattress can leave you waking up sweaty and furious at 3am.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the case here. Joshua never woke feeling overheated during the testing period and described the mattress temperature as neutral overall. He also said temperature didn’t negatively affect his sleep quality.

That lines up with Simba’s breathable hybrid design and open spring structure, which should allow for better airflow than dense memory foam alone.

Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress: motion transfer

Because Joshua slept alone, we couldn’t fully assess partner disturbance in the way we would during couple testing. However, he did note that the mattress felt stable overall with only slight movement transfer. Edge stability was described as neutral rather than especially reinforced.

Interestingly, Joshua suggested couples might prefer a bigger mattress size or potentially a more premium option with stronger support around the edges.

Does the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress feel well made?

Yes. While this is Simba’s more affordable model, it didn’t feel cheap during testing.

Joshua rated the overall quality four out of five and described the materials and finish as “decent quality” with a good overall feel. He also said the mattress appeared durable and well constructed.

That’s important because cheaper boxed mattresses can sometimes feel fine for the first few weeks before quickly losing support. There was no indication of that happening during testing here.

In fact, Joshua felt the mattress performance had “slightly improved” over time as it settled in.

Is the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress good value?

For the price, probably yes. The hybrid mattress market has become wildly crowded in recent years, with plenty of brands charging well over £1,000 for vaguely similar constructions wrapped in extremely persuasive marketing language.

The Simba Hybrid Essential feels more realistic. Joshua felt it offered good value for money and said it performed noticeably better than his slightly cheaper previous mattress. Crucially, he also said he would buy it at full price, which is usually the clearest sign a product has worked in day-to-day life.

Who is the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress best for? And who should avoid it?

This mattress feels particularly well suited to:

  • Combination sleepers

  • People wanting medium-firm support

  • Those upgrading from older soft foam mattresses

  • Anyone who tends to overheat slightly at night

  • Solo sleepers looking for a supportive hybrid without spending luxury-level money

It may not suit:

  • Couples wanting very strong edge support

  • People who prefer an ultra-soft mattress feel

  • Heavier sleepers wanting a more substantial luxury hybrid

  • Anyone expecting the premium finish of Simba’s higher-end models

Final verdict: is this the right mattress for you?

The Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress does exactly what many people actually need a mattress to do: it helps you sleep comfortably without making a huge fuss about itself.

There are more luxurious mattresses out there. There are also vastly more expensive ones that somehow still leave you waking up with a numb shoulder and a deep sense of financial regret.

What stood out here was consistency. The support remained comfortable throughout testing, the temperature stayed neutral and Joshua genuinely noticed improvements in stiffness and overall sleep comfort.

As he summed it up: “I have had good sleep on it.” And really, that’s the whole point.
