It’s hard to imagine that fondue started life as a way to make stale Swiss cheese and bread palatable. We can’t think of a more delicious combo than gooey cheese and carbs. And as the weather turns colder and nights draw in, a fondue set is a wise buy for cosy winter gatherings at home, whether you’re looking to cater to cheese fans or chocoholics. And modern fondue sets are easy to use, quick to set up and surprisingly simple to clean.
We’ve scoured the market for the hottest pots to add to your kitchen.

How to choose the best fondue set
There are some factors to consider when buying a fondue set – the fondues and fondont’s if you will.
Fondue type: Are you planning to go for a cheese fondue, a bouillon, or a chocolate fondue, or are you open to all three? Your fondue of choice will often dictate the type of material you will go for when seeking out the best set.
Material: This will generally fall into three categories – ceramic, enamelled cast iron, or stainless steel:
Ceramic: This is particularly suitable for cheese fondue because the earthenware will respond directly to a temperature change, plus the cheese won’t stick to the pan. Most cheese fondue sets also work well for chocolate. This type of pot isn’t suitable for cooking meat as it won’t get hot enough to cook it properly.
Enamelled cast iron: This type of pot works well for cheese and meat fondue as long as it’s enamelled. It will take that little bit longer to heat up but when it does it will retain its heat for longer periods. If you want to invest in a great pot that will serve you well for years, choose enamelled cast iron.
Stainless steel: Stainless steel heats quickly and is suitable for maintaining high temperatures, making it a good fit for meat fondue. If you go for one that has a decent non-stick coating, cheese and chocolate fondue will be fine.
What are the best cheeses for fondue?
It’s very important to go for a cheese that is well ripened like Gruyere, Gouda, or Fontina. The results are better if you mix up to three different cheeses – we’d go for all three, or a Comte cheese. Cheese that is creamy in texture will melt more delicately and smoothly. Look for mountain-style cheese if possible and remember to grab the white wine (Nigella adds a bit of Kirsch to hers).
What do you eat fondue with?
Choosing your dipping bites is as important as picking the cheese itself. Bread in all forms works well – French bread, croutons, sourdough, breadsticks and crackers are all utterly delicious. For broth fondue go for thinly sliced beef, chicken, prawns, and any veggies you can slice up small like mushrooms, broccoli and courgette. For chocolate fondue, grab it all - cookies, biscotti, marshmallows, meringues, strawberries, bananas, pretzels, it’s all going to taste insanely good!
What is the best fondue set to buy?
The Nostalgia FPS200 6-Cup Stainless Steel Electric Fondue sits in our top spot as the overall winner. It works equally well for both groups of friends and families due to its extremely generous size and there is no naked flame. It comes with detachable stainless steel parts to make the clean-up relatively simple and is mid-range in price, making it a fun investment that will last for many occasions to come.
How we chose our recommendations
Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out which fondue sets parents were recommending and had bought. We then did some research across the wider web, looking at which fondue sets had been featured in ‘best buy’ lists across websites, and what customer reviews said about them. Having collated all that information, we then narrowed our list down to the top 10 fondue sets on the market.
