Thanks for the link to that twill article mm47, I'm very partial to the fabric and some of you might remember me hunting down a workwear jacket last year. They chickened out of mentioning the Kim Jong Un effect though, from which not even The Blessed Margaret Howell is immune, as I found out the hard way.

Did you order anything from Cos Atelier bo? I liked quite a few things in that link although it might all be 'atelier' smoke and mirrors. Plus a) I'm trying to economise for a while and b) I didn't like anything enough to try and grapple with the sizing, although I was oddly drawn to that orange balaclava - which isn't a balaclava at all but I probably shouldn't mention it as S&B is quite fighty enough these days.

And CrkdLttr you were here and I missed you! Come back soon.

mm47 · 02/05/2023 09:04

flo play fair, don’t leave us in the lurch, I want to know more about finding out the hard way of the Kim Jong Un effect. (I found a workwear jacket in a flea market in Tisvilde last summer for 300 krone (yay for a bargain) and have worn it endlessly since so need some incentive to make me break up with it enough to try something else for a change.

mm47 · 02/05/2023 09:09

time karenmartini website recipes look amazing. I shall have a great morning doing some armchair cookery from my seat on the train.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 02/05/2023 09:17

GrinI saw the words ‘orange balaclava’ and was coming back anyway, as I have one from Colville, bought a few years ago. (Photo.) It’s a lovely thing - which doesn’t stop me intermittently ranting at Colville’s apparent greed and willingness to … absorb the knowledge and craft of people who somehow never made it into Vogue over decades and decades (except as grass skirted extras behind the blond model).

I refuse to get excited about anything Cos does now, it’s been disappointing for too long - but agree with whoever said balaclavas seem an odd thing to offer in Spring.

Enjoying your observations on Simone Leigh, @FloismeWink

Flo, no I'm on holiday and I think I'd overheat with a balaclava atm. But tbh, I'm hesitant for the same reason Crkd mentioned that it's been disappointing for so long. I'm being a bit ornery about having to pay a lot more to get maybe their old high quality design? But then again, this is an issue of Cos' own making, you have pretty much been able to get a nice dress there for between €70-100 for the last ten years, prices really haven't gone up by much.

I was reading a Rana Plaza anniversary article the other day and that pretty much summarised the above, they had better work conditions but they were being paid the same salary as ten years ago. So, really the Cos Atelier pricing isn't really that wrong, the normal prices are, but I'm still annoyed about it, I'd really prefer seeing it in store to see if you're actually getting a 'premium' product.

Also, I've got in the back of my head I'm heading to Antwerp for the sample sales so I'll hold off any purchases until I've gotten my fill there (absolutely unmissable pieces crossing my path excluded).

Hello. I’ve lurked here long enough,
time to say hi and put forth my style questions. Or not so much questions, really, as I’m more interested in the discussion (hence this thread) rather than advice.

I’m American, very early 40s with a 4 month old. Now working a “regular” desk job, living in northern New England, but previously a fashion designer (contemporary womenswear at various places) living in NY and LA. Lots of good changes really but deciding who to be, style-wise, has left me a bit lost.

I’m in a much smaller town in an industrial manufacturing industry - none of my former city-appropriate clothing fits here. Plus I’ve got this deep nostalgia now, since I’ve had a baby, of the kind of simple American look I remember from my childhood in the 80s-90s and what my own mom wore. I’ve bought some J.Crew items lately - cotton shaker stitch sweater and men’s cardigan, kind of 90s fit jeans to roll up the ankles in summer with espadrilles, huaraches, birks and tevas. Some wide leg chinos. Ribbed tank tops (American tank tops, not sweater vests, so sleeveless tshirts, is that what you call vests?). I’ll include some pics in a later post.

This is too long, yikes. But I have about 10 HUGE boxes of clothes in the attic that haven’t been opened since I moved 3 years ago, and my goal is to start that this summer. And post here as I process my old life into this new one.

Anyway that’s my intro, I’ll follow along with the general discussion now.

I took my life in my hands and went shopping the other day.

As I have no idea any more what size I am or what suits me now it was more research. I ended up with one Zadig t -shirt. Wow right? 😂

In the meantime is anyone interested in the Met Gala costumes?

Redandblue11 · 02/05/2023 15:38

I observed A LOT of black and white in the met gala, some very ‘safe’ and the other the usual met gala stuff , Karl’s cat for example. But in the whole … uninspiring for me.

I am waiting for some unmissable pieces to cross Bo’s path and be very envious as I have not had the pleasure to be presented with that problem for ages.

Hello longtime! Looking forward to see how you evolve style wise. Can you see some obvious styles from that era that you are a bit nostalgic that are more up to date? A lot of 90s is back so maybe you can slowly try some updated looks from that?

Hound , so your zadig purchase, did it fit you really well? Or was it more impulse buy ? Not judging, just curious as it can be very daunting/annoying when one goes shopping and be completely uninspired and come back empty handed , so it is tricky mentally and one can purchase something in the spur of the moment? On the other hand it can be an unexpected find that will be with you for many moons.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 02/05/2023 15:49

Well … I liked Letitia Wright’s collar, Bill Nighy’s collar and tie, Taika Waititi’s grey, and Jeremy Strong’s colour coordination. The Thom Browne outfits were sort of fun. The rest was mostly vile, maybe because so much black and white is hard on the eye.

@Redandblue11 I just got one of the skull t-shirts and yes it does fit with a fine layering t-shirt underneath. Nothing else of theirs would fit though so I not even try.

For the better part of 30 years I knew what worked for me - size, style etc. Enter menopause and it all changed. Not only has my body changed subtly but dramatically, my skin colour has changed, my hair, everything.

I need to put some time in to figure it out. But - I do not know where to start. Well I do - here with you guys and Botmp.

4plusthehound · 02/05/2023 16:03

I found the Met to be SO underwhelming.

So average.

So many horizontal lines.

So many badly fitted dresses.

So little creativity.

Such bad excecution.

Way to much Marc bloody Jacobs.

botemp · 02/05/2023 16:16

Welcome, longtime I do love a lurker reveal, especially when they're in far flung places. I'm wondering how much overlap there is between your childhood suburbanites and the American cruise passengers I used to observe when I lived in the Caribbean in similar times. A bit of subruban take on the WASP look, hints of Perry Ellis, immaculately clean trainers being very important (and they were always discussing their tire rims and how to keep them clean, rims were a real status signifier iirc over the standard hubcaps but showed up dirt much quicker)? Ooh and tennis bracelets, and sun vizors but the latter probably only on vacation.

Is it just me or does almost everyone at the Met Gala look like they're wearing a face filter? I'm guessing it's a combination of brighter lights than normal and heavy makeup, mostly, but there's a lot of uncanny valley happening, even the men resemble Ken dolls. Kirsten Stewart who probably looks completely normal looked like an odd one out as a result and am sure will receive tutting commentary about looking a little haggard Hmm

Lots of pearls, which was interesting considering our pearl creep conversation previously but that was a bit of a predictable choice so I'm not counting it as a win for the pearl creep in.

I'm sad no one went with KL's main inspiration of 18th century and reduced it to black and white.

And I'm a bit sighing about the Karl Lagerfeld is evil internet take. The man was a professional troll before it was a thing, he knew exactly what to say to get the media write up he needed but the vast majority of the time he spoke tongue firmly in cheek but sometimes not which makes it impossible to tell when he was and wasn't serious.

I'm not really interested in defending the man, I'm just annoyed the conversation isn't about what he'd make of this, because I heavily suspect he'd hate the idea of being made into a theme way more than being declared all the -ists.

Interesting!

I tried to check out the Met Ball outfits but couldn't get past Anna Wintour and Bill Nighy being An Item. Shock Is this true??

They're just friends, apparently 🧐

It's not as bad as Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddlestone being an item.

Yes they are. I read about them a while ago and think it's rather fabulous. Was so was delighted to see a picture of them together. I often see Nighy when I'm at The Delaunay, he's always impeccably dressed. He didn't disappointed at The Met gala.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 02/05/2023 22:46

As you ladies are the better dressed and appreciate that clothes are a worthwhile investment, I wanted to pick your brains. I need a new pair of tailored navy shorts. Usually, I would go Max Mara but they haven't done any in navy this year, although am tempted by their Ecuba short in ivory.

With the shape of that pair in mind, if anyone has any suggestions or has seen anything suitable in navy, do let me know.

Thank you so very much.

To return to the Met Gala topic, I do feel that with every year, the outfits and guest become less interesting. In theory, I hoped this year's theme would garner some wonderful outfits, but with the exception of Kristen Stewart, I was disappointed by it all.

Ecuba shorts | Weekend Max Mara

Weekend Max Mara's Ecuba shorts are made from ivory cotton and tailored to a high-rise A-line bermuda length, with front pleats and slip pockets.

Navy shorts

Might be too short?

botemp · 03/05/2023 08:05

Navy seems to be on the outs this year for whatever reason. But then again, the summer collections seem to be trickling in really slowly as well. I had a look at Khaite for you Bunny as I remember them having similar in navy at that length last year and they only have one pair of shorts so far and it's already sold out in most sizes Confused. I do think Valentino makes nice shorts weirdly enough, probably down to the material choice (summer wools, or silk) but they tend to go for very short lengths.

Toteme usually has navy but it's all black this year by the looks of it. Off tangent, I did spot they now have my beloved silk trousers of theirs in a linen lyocell mix, wil have to contemplate that, I already own the silk ones in two colours Blush

WRT the Met Gala becoming less interesting, and dare I say it, less relevant, I agree it feels off. It does raise a lot of money, which these events rarely do. The cause probably isn't one where most people would like prioritise $16M going to first though so I anticipate some backlash at some point. And tbh, that the most interesting conversation of the night is whether AW&BN are an item is probably telling, if that didn't happen we'd only have Jared Leto attending as a furry to talk about...

Talking shorts is making me really crave summer summer, and thinking about it they are perfect for the office.
