Natasha how do the oska pieces run? Are they true to size? Misses the point entirely
ok, yes interesting what you observe. In summary, it seems that post pandemic we want to be sold by young-pouty-awkward-leaning-against-the-wall models?! 🙄

btw - I never paid attention to oska before, but I can see some pieces with appeal, if mixed well with other stuff. Is not my style to be head to toe in that (same happens with Margaret Howell or toast)

Sooverthemill · 27/06/2023 07:56

No idea why they treat me especially well or even if they actually do. I wish I had free shipping again! July 14 obviously there will be a discount as usual so I may look then. I wasn’t drawn to any archives purchases. I’ve been to a real life shop when I went to Paris and it was really nice as I was the only customer and DH could sit on the sofa. Everyone was helpful and friendly. For me they provide good quality clothing that errs towards classic.

Floisme · 27/06/2023 08:51

Isn't one of the Cabbages and Roses models older? But I'm nitpicking - I've just looked at some brands where I think I've seen older models in the past: Toast, Me and Em, Cos, Celtic & Co, M&S and I couldn't spot any who looked over 40.

So yeah it supports what that article says about labels getting scared of being associated with older women and, much as it pains me to say so, when I read some threads on this board, I can kind of see why. The Seasalt one was a case in point - I think that brand gets a lot of things wrong but that wasn't exactly what the thread was about.

I winced at the idea of the next generation of designers being 'systematically educated' though. Can't they just talk to their mothers?

botemp · 27/06/2023 09:16

I dunno, I think inherently there's a romance tied up with the idea of creating fashion as being countercultural and subverting the status quo. Lazily, when you're young, that tends to equate to older people.

I've always been skeptic of representation narratives, I think it's probably true for some but not universal. I don't think it means all everyone just wants is the 90s model, it's just a proven business record and that's what matters more to brands atm. And unlike the 90s there is a wealth of influencers to show a range of shapes and sizes and soon enough there will be ai models (although obvious issues with those previously noted in a different article shared on here by -shangpie or time?-) so I think that helps brands rationalise pulling back on that too. I wonder if similar pull back can be seen with the midsize models and there was definitely a boom of business for black models post George Floyd and accompanying riots/protests.

I’d love to do that mini dress making class. I only wish I had more time.

It looks like I could take in both Chanel and Diva at the V&A on the same day so I’m tentatively planning a trip. Anyone fancy a meet up?

Ah Christopher Kane. I remember being very enamored with some lace neon dresses. Probably ripe for a revival now.

You’re right in that JW Anderson has does loads of collabs and is obviously prolific at Loewe and his own line and yet somehow doesn’t feel over exposed. It’s a mystery. I saw this jacket in resale. I won’t get it, but love the sleeves.

I must admit that while conceptually I’m in favour of size inclusive models, in practice I am unlikely to purchase anything shown only on a plus size model. I just lack the sort of “3D intelligence” needed to figure out how it would look on me. Not that I closely resemble a straight size model either, but a lifetime of looking at garments on them means I understand how most will translate onto my frame.

For the same reason I’ll often skip Sézane. Some of the garments won’t even show a full-length shot or a shot of the back. It’s so annoying. I used to buy a fair bit but haven’t purchased from there in a year. The quality was good, but I’m wary of the fabrics now. Lots of polyester and blends. I think any of the classics that I wanted I already own. They’ve moved away from classics and now do a lot of prints which are not really my thing. I’m on holiday now and I do have 4 pieces from Sézane with me and I packed fairly light. When I like their things, I really like them and find them very wearable.

I'm right there with you on that. I wholeheartedly approve of it in theory, but find it much more difficult in practice. To be very honest, I often find myself skipping past the clothing if I'm looking quickly, which I don't find myself doing with larger sized women in person.

I think the straight sized models are more like clothes hangers in some way in that they sort of disappear and you're seeing the clothing, whereas with larger sized models, you're looking at how the clothing fits, and trying to apply it to yourself, which can be distracting.

Redandblue11 · 27/06/2023 14:47

I am up for a meet up if we can find a slot that works Elle and anyone else.

I actually found the sezane shop in Paris uninspiring and annoying, I have been 3 times and only once I bought from them. Last time was January this year and the rails looked like a mix of per una and Debenhams… with some clever styling.

Interesting observation about straight models. While I agree with that, I wonder how/if puts people off who are fuller in size as they cannot see themselves in that clothing? Genuine question as I do not know.

Voltefarce · 27/06/2023 15:32

I am also up for a meet up, if that’s ok? I know I am pretty quiet on here (as I have no fashion knowledge) so understand if uncomfortable.

I am going on a Vinted selling spree. Whenever I feel uninspired by something in my wardrobe I am listing.

NatashaDancing · 27/06/2023 15:56

Isn't one of the Cabbages and Roses models older?

You're right I'm doing them an injustice. There's one "older" and one who might be 40s. The "older" one looking rather lovely (if you like that sort of thing - I do) in the sort of dress which usually is confidently asserted on (other threads) here to be unsuitable for "older" women.

"older" woman in unsuitable frock.

Of course you can join in @Voltefarce . I think of you as one of the ones who have been for a while and is a ‘quiet confident one’ in the parisiennes threads world😉
we will sort out details off line.

Redandblue11 · 27/06/2023 16:52

I love that sort of thing @NatashaDancing , but that is a very odd dress and pose on that model .
you might have missed my question - does Oska run true to size?

microbius · 27/06/2023 17:05

I'll join for a meet-up if time fits. Are you thinking September time-wise? MM will up for it too, I am sure

Oska has sizing which runs from 0 to 4. I don't know what these are on "normal sizing"

I have a short, boiled wool jacket which is a 0. A longer more fitted boiled wool jacket which is a 1. The Dust Bowl dress is also a 1 and 2 coats (including the one in the link posted) which are 2s. The Dust Bowl dress is very loose fitting. The raincoat is generous enough to wear on top of a dress and jacket but isn't overwhelming.

On every other brand I'm a 14 on a good day and a 16 on a bad (except the one dress I tried to buy from Erdem which in the style I was looking at made me a 10, but that was a one- off freak incident! And Klements where I can be a medium or a small)

All my Oska stuff was bought in store. I'm not sure how I could have bought online as it's very much a case of looking at a garment and thinking "yeah, that looks right.

I agree about putting a piece with other brands rather than top to toe Oska.

mm47 · 28/06/2023 04:43

i’d love to join the MN meet-up!

Voltefarce · 28/06/2023 08:06

Very kind, @Redandblue11.

On the Sezane discussion, I tend to use the website for styling ideas. Buy all of my Sezane second hand on vinted these days, which is a little hit and miss as the sizing can be a bit strange. For instance, I bought a blouse in my size which is huge across the bust but once on I cannot move my arms as the sleeves are so tight. I am considering whether to take the sleeves out and replace or just re list. Given my list of sewing projects at the moment, I think the latter will win.

botemp · 29/06/2023 08:50

I'm on holiday too, well sort of pre-holidaying with friends in Paris before OH joins up and we go on a proper few weeks holiday at the weekend. Managed to split off yesterday as friends idea of fun is not seeing every square centimetre of the grand magasins. Bought some great things, will report back later.

As for meetup, I'll see when there's a date, I think September was already sold out as was most of October and I'm not really prepared to buy the annual membership for an exhibition I've already seen for the most part.

have a great holiday bo looking forward to report on vacation retail. As far as meet up is concerned there is also the autumn Margaret Howell sample sale to come…

Redandblue11 · 29/06/2023 09:18

I have just checked the Fridays in September and still plenty of tickets for Diva, is this what you saw Bo?
eg 15 sept @ToEllewithIt , does a Friday in Sep work for you or where you thinking later in the year?

Looking forward to hear and see the purchases report Bo, enjoy the hols.

yesterday I tried this linen skirt in the Reiss sale, this was too big on me though and part of me really likes the pattern but when I see the photo I don’t quite like what I see, but might be the fit (the sandals look a bit weird as I did not put them back properly so I am standing on part of the fastenings)
I also tried too pairs of trousers that could have been great if they fitted better, all the hip etc was lovely but they were too big on my waist, which is really weird as I am normally straight up and down and things that fit on my hip don’t tend to be big on my waist …

No, it's the Chanel exhibit that's selling out.

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 29/06/2023 11:26

Oh yes, channel seems to only have the last 2 Thursdays of Oct.
I am easy which one we see / both.

Voltefarce · 29/06/2023 12:59

I may not be able to come during the week due to work, but am a member so no need to book and I could tag along if I can make it.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 29/06/2023 13:40

I'm a V&A member too and would like to join the meet up if possible.

botemp · 30/06/2023 10:42

Just a quick check-in, just wanted to check these trousers I saw at a dépôt vente aren't the Chanel trousers living rent free in @ToEllewithIt 's head. I'm fairly sure they're not the same but wanted to check just in case.

Oooh so close but it's more of a black and white check or houndstooth. Those look short too, but maybe it's just the photo. The Fw19 Collection

Any good way to organize the meet off thread. Can you group DM here? Must look. I can do the first and 4/5 Friday in Sep. I'm a member with a plus one so could bring someone in if that helps? October good too.
