Ah, interesting, longtime, I think the overlap in my mind is less the individual items and more that sort of prefabricated feel of catalogue wear. I think this was just that period before fashion declared wearing head to toe one designer/brand as deeply unfashionable. But I do remember it being worn very carefully, I guess there sort of was the fear that if one item got sullied you'd lose the whole look and it was very much about the look, hence the obsession with keeping footwear pristine. I guess in current times that's deeply unfashionable since we've sort of gone from the catalogue 'all in one look' to the high-low and now to the vintage mixed with new-ish (preferably old things from your wardrobe). There's definitely an aversion to brand new in a sort of signalling environmental consciousness among certain groups. The whole "is that new?" question has a very different tone to it these days.
You've been much more studious than me Elle, thing is I just kept getting distracted, with the weird faces, what kind of weird shoes Anne Hathaway was wearing and so on, and there were some odd fits. I think it kind of displayed that Karl Lagerfeld's talent isn't easily replicated, it may look simple but, as always, it really isn't, only right the vintage Chanel stuff stole the show.
It really did need a bit of his humour, I agree, the opportunities were ripe, someone could have showed up in leggings to prove that famous quote wrong. I also felt it sort of reflected how bland fashion is at the moment, so maybe it's less of the commercial incentive I assumed it was and designers are feeling a bit blah at the moment.
The polarisation on here seems to ebb and flow on here atm, not sure what prompts it all but once it sets off it sets off. Anyhow I should probably just keep out of it and avoid pointy threads. But it seems I can't resist declaring current Chanel as very uninteresting when given the opportunity but I don't really know what the issue is/was with the Chanel adorers thread 🤷
I don't have a subscription to Business of Fashion but I am subscribed to their newsletter which just links to their articles and sends in breaking news (death of a designer or, departure or appointment of a job, usually). I'm aware it sounds useless as it doesn't give access to those articles but the titles and intro usually give enough insight. I like the idea of business fashion specific news but tbh BoF is not top notch journalism I'm willing to pay the steep price for, well it's not that steep but for something so specific when you're not in that field it does feel high.
Off business tangent, I've always wondered why no one has set up a handbag investment fund yet, they buy special editions and keep them safely stored and lots of people have the ultimate low effort gift of gifting someone a piece of a Birkin or Chanel bag. I suppose you could even further incentivise it by being able to trade in enough shares for a bag almost like it's a savings account.
