Thanks for the welcome!

I also was fairly unimpressed by the Met gala looks, agree that the excess of black and white ended up being quite dull after a while. Disappointed with the lack of humor, really, Karl always seemed to have a cutting irony - everyone looked so serious, maybe an effect of the b&w palette too?

Bo to your question - I would say categorically no, I don’t think the cruise style you mention is similar to what I’m referencing. But then I kind of might wear a tennis bracelet, so maybe a little? I’m much more in the “oh, this old thing?” camp, and being embarrassed to be wearing things that are too “new” looking. See attached below.

Red I’m pleased that some of those 90s shape are back in style, I’ve definitely picked up some easier shaped jeans and have been wearing much looser silhouettes. I’d like that elusive mix of complete comfort / effortless style ….

Floisme · 03/05/2023 14:08

Oh yeah two consenting adults and so forth, I wish them well if it's true. It just struck me as a slightly incongruous pairing, nothing like the level of, say Jerry Hall and Rupert Murdoch, but enough for me to go. 'What? Who?' and forget all about the Met Ball frocks. Plus in my strictly personal opinion, he's a better dresser than she is (or at least I prefer his style to hers) so I can imagine some interesting conversations between them.

mm47 my Margaret Howell / Kim Jong Un moment was in the January 2022 sales when I landed one of her workwear jackets at what I thought was a bargainous price. I think it was the proportions that were all wrong for me and, given the size of the price reduction, I clearly wasn't the only one. I tried a few other places, Toast and Community Clothing included, before discovering the Carrier Company XL child size.

Welcome longtimefirsttime!

ToEllewithIt · 03/05/2023 15:00

I agree that the Met lacked a bit of humour. I can think of plenty of whimsical moments at Chanel – the life ring bags, the Chanel supermarket so it’s a shame that no one chose to riff on those.

The vintage Chanels were lovely, but expected and honestly a bit dull with the exception of Dua Lipa’s which did have the wow-factor

I really liked the other designers taking on the Chanel assignment so you got a sense of what a collaboration would have looked like. The Versace x Chanel worn by Anne Hathaway was very successful in this regard, you could clearly see the aesthetic of both houses. Cardi B’s Chen Peng dress also worked well in this genre as did Olivia Roderigo and Jenna Ortega in Thom Browne. J Lo’s Ralph Lauren was markedly less successful, with that fascinator giving vibes of nothing so much as wedding guest determined to steal the bride’s thunder and Salma Hayek in that awful Gucci. It’s incredible to me that she often gets such poorly chosen dresses given her husband’s position. Honorable mentions to Lily James in Tamara Ralph and Lizzo in Chanel. Kim K – I liked the pearl draped top and the cloak, but the bottom half looked like shape-wear and the chains which worked well on her chest, just turned a bit craft-project at the bottom. Emily Ratajkowski in Tory Burch is not a combination that I expected to love, but I really did like this. A subtle and elegant homage. I also loved the construction of Ashley Graham’s dress by Harris Reed.

I saw some discussion of Chanel in this forum, but both threads felt very polarized. The check wide leg trousers from KL’s last collection still haunt my dreams. If anyone sees them pre-loved…. The bags are a funny one. I have a GST that IMO is the ultimate work bag, It’s so well constructed, takes a laptop easily and yet retains its shape and the straps don’t dig in. Plus it reads like a “nice handbag” rather than a work “holdall” so it perfect for scenarios when you need a laptop, but are going to a dinner directly after. The flap bags I have I rarely wear any more. I know they were never exactly discreet, but in the last few years they feel like a massive statement and I feel quite self-conscious wearing them now. The insane price rises haven’t helped. I vacillate between thinking I should sell them given the huge resale or keep them as they’re “classic”.

Welcome longtime I like the reference images. Those styles make me think of my Mum in the 90s. That style was hugely aspirational to her age group – 30s when I was growing up. There does appear to be a thriving market for second-hand clothes of that era.

Love the Toteme trousers botemp. Got myself a pair of white linen trousers that I’ve worn lots.

I have a Times subscription, FT plus lots of access to other news sources via Bloomberg. Does anyone subscribe to Business of Fashion?

Yes, what was that all about? Mind you there were some lovely frocks at that wedding.

botemp · 03/05/2023 15:51

Ah, interesting, longtime, I think the overlap in my mind is less the individual items and more that sort of prefabricated feel of catalogue wear. I think this was just that period before fashion declared wearing head to toe one designer/brand as deeply unfashionable. But I do remember it being worn very carefully, I guess there sort of was the fear that if one item got sullied you'd lose the whole look and it was very much about the look, hence the obsession with keeping footwear pristine. I guess in current times that's deeply unfashionable since we've sort of gone from the catalogue 'all in one look' to the high-low and now to the vintage mixed with new-ish (preferably old things from your wardrobe). There's definitely an aversion to brand new in a sort of signalling environmental consciousness among certain groups. The whole "is that new?" question has a very different tone to it these days.

You've been much more studious than me Elle, thing is I just kept getting distracted, with the weird faces, what kind of weird shoes Anne Hathaway was wearing and so on, and there were some odd fits. I think it kind of displayed that Karl Lagerfeld's talent isn't easily replicated, it may look simple but, as always, it really isn't, only right the vintage Chanel stuff stole the show.

It really did need a bit of his humour, I agree, the opportunities were ripe, someone could have showed up in leggings to prove that famous quote wrong. I also felt it sort of reflected how bland fashion is at the moment, so maybe it's less of the commercial incentive I assumed it was and designers are feeling a bit blah at the moment.

The polarisation on here seems to ebb and flow on here atm, not sure what prompts it all but once it sets off it sets off. Anyhow I should probably just keep out of it and avoid pointy threads. But it seems I can't resist declaring current Chanel as very uninteresting when given the opportunity but I don't really know what the issue is/was with the Chanel adorers thread 🤷

I don't have a subscription to Business of Fashion but I am subscribed to their newsletter which just links to their articles and sends in breaking news (death of a designer or, departure or appointment of a job, usually). I'm aware it sounds useless as it doesn't give access to those articles but the titles and intro usually give enough insight. I like the idea of business fashion specific news but tbh BoF is not top notch journalism I'm willing to pay the steep price for, well it's not that steep but for something so specific when you're not in that field it does feel high.

Off business tangent, I've always wondered why no one has set up a handbag investment fund yet, they buy special editions and keep them safely stored and lots of people have the ultimate low effort gift of gifting someone a piece of a Birkin or Chanel bag. I suppose you could even further incentivise it by being able to trade in enough shares for a bag almost like it's a savings account.

Sarah Murdoch's frock made it all worthwhile, although Jerry certainly took one for the team that day. Smile

This is the look that lives rent-free in my head.

More succession fashion chat.

I'm off to google those wedding photos. I'm not sure I knew that they were married tbh.

I think it was in the news recently that Murdoch informed her of his intent to divorce her by email, and that in the divorce settlement there was some clause that she's not allowed to talk to the writers of Succession 😂

Meanwhile I would very much like a ludicrously capacious bag, I like the attached. Thankfully I have no desire to mingle with the 0.01 percenters.

Also, since I have no one to talk about this aspect of Succession with, Shive seems to finally have her sartorial groove back. It somewhat made up for the low energy episode (there's only so few episodes left and I'm getting antsy with all the loose ends but I suspect they'll stay that way).

Sorry, for the non show watcheser, the ludicrously capacious bag is a Succession reference.

Sarah Murdoch's dress is indeed very lovely and Jerry's, ahem, wasn't:

www.theguardian.com/media/2016/mar/05/rupert-murdoch-and-jerry-hall-hold-second-wedding-ceremony-in-church

I'm in Amsterdam at the moment, and went for a walk along its equivalent of Bond Street. I was surprised to see queues outside a number of the designer shops. Fortunately for the hopeful shoppers, it was a lovely day, but it would be miserable if it were raining. Almost everyone was wearing head to toe black, maybe with a bit of white.

The (only?) department store, de Bijenkorf isn't actually that big, but it is very good, and has a far bigger Max Mara section than any shop I can think of in London. And oh! the colours that they'd chosen were gorgeous. I can find my shopping activities to buying a black 'crocheted' lace blouse by IKKS. I used to buy that brand for my son, when he was little 20 years ago, and most of the women's clothes are not my thing, but this particular top I really like, and it seems very adaptable:

MmePoppySeedDefage · 03/05/2023 21:22

*'confined'.

NatashaDancing · 03/05/2023 21:32

I liked Jerry Hall's dress. It's a Vivienne Westwood "8" dress isn't it?

I used to buy almost all my work jackets and skirts in Pauw, Amsterdam. I used to go every 18-24 months (not that Pauw wears out, I just liked having lots of their stuff)

ToEllewithIt · 03/05/2023 21:36

I'm hoping that Shiobh's sartorial choices fit dramaturgically with a more pulled-together Siobh.

I loved the chain halterneck in episode 3 and the jumpsuit in the last episode.

What would you even put in that bag, your lunch pail?

It looks like it folds flat which would be cool. The triangles give it a touch of the Bao Bao bag.

botemp · 03/05/2023 21:36

When it's raining the shops provide umbrellas, Poppy, it's rather ridiculous that people wait in line for it all but even at odd hours there seem to be lines. A lot of people in line are personal shoppers of sorts, specifically sourcing something for clients abroad.

Make sure to stop by Tamago if you're still looking for shopping stops, it's on the Spiegelgracht, secondhand high end with good curation, the upstairs is slightly cheaper although it's all pricey. Salon Heleen Hulsman also has nice things usually, but you need to make an appointment although you usually can just go in without one on Fridays. De Ruilhoek is a little farther out but has the occasional gem but is more of a rummage. (These are all secondhand places).

OP posts:
botemp · 03/05/2023 21:44

Elle, not sure what to put in it either, it's gigantic beach bag sized but not very beach appropriate. I think it folds away too, it reminds me of an Isaac Reina week bag that just falls flat when empty, they don't make it anymore though.

Yes, I enjoy the storytelling in the clothes on Succession, I also like that they have bad outfits and good, it's weirdly realistic, suits the shaky camera shots as well. Kendall's hair is annoying me though, it looks badly painted and I can't help but think that's on purpose and I can't figure out the meaning of it.

Thanks Bo. I'm not that far from Tamago...

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 03/05/2023 23:01

Someone made the same point about Kendall’s dyed hair on the Succession thread - don’t think anyone has arrived at a satisfactory explanation yet.

botemp · 04/05/2023 07:26

<<I'm just going to mark this as SPOILER for anyone who hasn't watched the show yet>>

I didn't know there was a Succession thread, but of course there is one. I've been scarred from venturing into the Succcesion Reddit last year, I didn't know there were people very interested in fucking (Shiv's) 'fat' armpits 😱

Anyhow, Kendall's hair, my best theory so far, in the moment when I noticed it, it reminded me of Giuliani when he was trying to salvage the presidential election results in Philadelphia (or some other blue city in a swing state) standing in some landscapers yard next to an incineration plant and a sex shop, sweating profusely and his bad hair dye job slowly trickling down his face.

Ken's been pretty background and subdued these past few episodes, not really grieving, and now he's gotten an unexpected win. Which means we're at the point in a Succession season where I get annoyed as I remember the show never really progresses and all the plot I've paid careful attention to is fairly meaningless, so I assume the hair is part of the façade that's about to crumble (or it's just a bad dye job) and Ken is due his inevitable plunge into dark depths.

Dad may be dead but Matson has seamlessly filled the vacancy with the siblings vyeing alternatingly between his favour and thinking they can outfox them or their siblings, preferably both. Only problem is, Matsson has no love for the not serious people so I can't help but feel this is the little foxes' last round at playing at this and they are inevitably going to end up meeting a QC in a kimono (sorry, I've forgotten the man's name, something Jolly but not actually jolly, the anti brexit campaigner/lawyer anyhow with weird twitter confessions).

<<End of spoiler talks>>

Poppy, shops close early today for the memorial at eight, and everyone participates in the moment of silence, even the meal delivery workers will get off their bike to participate. It'll be quite crowded around the Dam (where de Bijenkorf is) as that's where the ceremony is. I expect it's extra busy this year with people thinking Zelensky might show up now that he's popped up in the country but I suspect if he attends anywhere it'll be a smaller memorial in The Hague, or already be out of the country.

A huge thank you for so many shorts suggestions.

@Redandblue11 So chic but too masculine for me.

@botemp 's Khaite, the white one particularly were dreamy, and if I was taller (and less clumsy) would invest in. The Toteme trousers you linked to rather reminded me of a silk pair from Nicole Farhi in the early 90s. A long-legged girlfriend had them, and at 5ft 4, I looked ridiculous when I tried them on (in the hope my mother would buy them for me.)

@NatashaDancing I think the Bonpoint ones are a serious contender. My only worry is the cuffed hems might be a little too bulky. Will report back should I succumb.

@longtimefirsttime Thank you for sharing those J Crew images. Those really were JC's halcyon days when WASPs (am I still allowed to use this expression?) were central to their aesthetic. It's not Cruise, but very much something one would wear on a yacht while sailing at Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Fire Island et al. And yes, a tennis bracelet or a gold macaroni one would be the accessory of choice.

@ToEllewithIt The outfit CD is wearing is just Chanel monochrome perfection. I also loved her coat at Chanel Supermarket. There was a distinct lack of humour or playfulness at the Met gala, and these were always central to Lagerfeld's Chanel.

Re. BoF subscription. I was reliant on my ex-boyfriend's subscription for a long time, so never got round to subscribing. Now, most of what I want to read has been saved to archive.ph

Re. Jerry Hall and Rupert Murdoch. I always felt that was an incongruous pairing, but at the same time, after Jagger, where does one go? I suppose this is why I really like the pairing of Wintour and Nighy, there's a real texture to it. Hall & Murdoch always read more of a trophy/prestige pairing with little real connection.

For those who didn't read it, here's the Vanity Fair article that contains the nugget about Murdoch's divorce email to Hall.

Apologies if I've missed anyone off

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 04/05/2023 12:29

Eek, I think a link I have shared has caused my post to be hidden.

Sigh.

Redandblue11 · 04/05/2023 12:37

Your post is visible bunny!

Floisme · 04/05/2023 12:51

I can see your post too bunny and thanks for the link, I'll enjoy reading that later.

As regards Jerry and Rupert, I can well believe that Murdoch would be very good company for an evening. He's a newspaper man, just think of all the stories he must have to tell! I'd go for dinner with him Smile How it ever got beyond that well, who knows. I'm kind of reminded of when Jackie Kennedy married Aristotle Onassis and everyone was going 'Eh??' but I was too young to pay much attention.

botemp · 04/05/2023 17:46

Mumsnet automatically hides archive .org links, it's why I usually use 12ft .io. Good to see they reversed the decision and let your post back in bunny.

More shorts, this is kind of a useless link unless you're headed to Paris or the EU soon, slightly more formal secondhand pair by Céline. They do ship to the UK but don't allow returns outside of the EU and they don't seem to do DDP for the UK (but do for the USA Confused).

I'm also 5'4 and the silk versions of the Toteme trousers miraculously work really well for me, I did check before buying that some celebrity of the same height wore them well too. But Elle, who is a fair bit taller, also bought them and they seem to work for her to so there's some sort of magic happening with those trousers.

I'm sort of the opposite when it comes to odd pairings, Flo, I find them far more believable because they don't make sense. Surely if you're entering an arranged relationship you'd arrange one which didn't look so off from the outside, otherwise what's the point. I hadn't really paid attention when they got married so was quite surprised at all the celebs who are usually quite political willingly attending a Murdoch wedding.

I'd just assumed a lot of the celebs were there simply because Jerry was a friend - I've always had the impression she's well liked. I'm pretty sure Jade Jagger (her step daughter) went which I think says quite a lot about Jerry as a person. And I have to say, I think it would be fascinating to watch the Murdochs close at hand and check out who's in favour with Rupert and who's speaking to whom. Not to mention the frocks. Never mind Succession - I'd have gone like a shot if I'd been asked, can't think why I wasn't Grin
