Sorry, jade Vionnet dress.

Also loved the Poiret coat above it, with the strategically-placed break in the clouds for the derriere!

quirkychick · 17/06/2023 12:00

Wow, hard to choose a favourite, though that Poiret coat is stunning. My wealthy, great aunt used to have some beautiful pieces from the 20s and 30s. I think they went to her niece.

NatashaDancing · 17/06/2023 14:44

The 2 Chanel pieces and I'm not usually a fan, the Lanvin dress and the Poiret coat.

Rather more prosaically on the way home from an unexpectedly enjoyable work social event and being slightly drunk and very hungry I treated myself to a Macdonald's veggie burger. It was slightly depressing to see a young man in Macdonald's wearing a Givenchy branded t-shirt like the one in the link (or a mock up). Givenchy demeans itself to sell out its name to stick on an ordinary white t-shirt.

I get the concept of "entry level". Tiffany does "entry level" silver jewellery that's lovely in itself (and like the film, the sales assistants are lovely) Longchamp's Le Pliage are worth having in themselves - but blazoning your name across an ordinary white t-shirt?

MmePoppySeedDefage · 17/06/2023 22:51

Well quite.

I loved all of the clothes in that link: it's interesting how non-flapper almost all the dresses were - they had some shape. I really, really, loved the Delaunay coat and the Chanel coat with the unexpected green.

NatashaDancing · 17/06/2023 22:57

I'd never have guessed the green coat was Chanel. It looks more like Lanvin.

RhadamanthNemes · 19/06/2023 04:18

C'mon @NatashaDancing

We all love you here!

It's OK.

Yes! My DD's boyfriend wears Givenchy and Versace sportswear, it drives me bonkers.

But, yoots gonna yoot!

4plusthehound · 21/06/2023 01:25

RIP Vuitton.

Horrible, badly made mess.

botemp · 21/06/2023 09:52

Well they certainly got their money's worth, they covered the show on the national news here this morning. Usually, a designer has to die for that to happen. I'm not that invested in Vuitton so I think it's only fair to wait a couple of shows to give a definitive verdict and clothes have always been a relatively recent sideshow for Vuitton that's more publicity than commerce so objectively they've done well on that front already. Whether it will lead to new and sustained growth will be interesting as it's definitely leaning on a waning interest in Streetwear and traditional celebrity culture.

But creatively, yes, for the moment it fails to look cohesive, there's definitely elements of Daniel Lee's Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Michele's Gucci, Casablanca, Acne Studios, Tom Browne, Pyer Moss, and probably more, which made it read like a greatest hits tribute with Louis Vuitton branding on top, definitely more a statement of style than fashion for now.

I'm mostly confused about the whole show being about love, supposedly, yet prolific use of digital camo and camo nets everywhere (not dissimilar to the camouflage pattern the Ukrainian forces use, theirs is nicer though, yy, I know the Vuitton camo is based off of their damier pattern but digital camo was here first). I mean, camouflage pattern has been just a random fashion pattern for quite some time but in the current climate not so much. I get the sense 'love' being the unifying theme was decided on after several exhausting PR meetings.

I think I got my first Vinted stinker, the Raey dress is less 70s wallpaper and more the weird carpets they use as tablecloths in traditional Dutch pancake houses here (yes, it's as unhygienic as it sounds). The fit is fantastic though, so I can't decide whether to relist it or dye it. I think the former as dyeing just sounds like a recipe for more grief.

Forgot to mention, pleased to see my wishes have been heard as there's a (partial) Tina Turner fashion exhibition coming up at the V&A, although considering the timing, I suspect this was already in the works and is just good press packaging. If anyone goes, let me know if it's worth a trip to London for, please?

‘Larger than life’: Tina Turner outfits to star in V&A’s Diva exhibition

Immersive show includes talk by late singer’s designer Bob Mackie as well as items worn by Prince and Elton John

Oh I thought Viutton really had died and that hound was summarising his whole career in ermm uncompromising language Blush. I don't actually know much about him at all, apart from those bags and suitcases that aren't really my thing.

I think the Diva exhibition has been in the pipeline for a while bo. I've no doubt they'd always planned to include some Tina Turner outfits in the show but that article smells of pretty tasteless PR to me. I wouldn't make a special trip to London to see it but it looks like it'll be on at the same time as the Chanel exhibition so handy timing.

botemp · 21/06/2023 12:20

I mean, it was a middle of the night post so it could have been either way on here, Flo 🙈 but I took it to refer to Pharell Williams' debut as head creative for Vuittton Men's (replacing Virgil Abloh). The original Louis Vuitton is long dead by now, I believe, it was just a trunks, and later bags, brand for a very long time. Either late 90s or early 00s they stated doing fashion (women only at first, iirc).

I've already seen the Chanel exhibit when it was in Paris Flo, the few additional UK pieces don't really make it seem worth travelling and battling for tickets for so far. Eurostar seems to be going in heavy on promotional fares between Amsterdam and London though so it's all tempting but annoyingly the cheap fares are only from London back and forth and not vice versa (so far).

OP posts:
Floisme · 21/06/2023 12:57

Sorry, what did you say? Pharrell Williams and Vuitton? Head creative?

And Monsieur Vuitton died in 1892 or so Google tells me. Righto.

I think I may be turning into that judge who'd never heard of Gazza.

I do like 'Happy' though. Good song.

NatashaDancing · 21/06/2023 13:22

I quite like LV in the same way I quite like trainers - which is to say not at all but I appreciate there being luxury, coveted items I have absolutely no interest in owning. Not sure if that makes sense.

Redandblue11 · 22/06/2023 07:31

I am with you Flo! I was thoroughly confused about all the above comments. After reading some stuff out there I think I have just about established what is going on.

I am interested about your Raey dress Bo, if the fit is fantastic… is it really bad or one of those items that grows on you? Can we see a photo of it?
Yesterday I raided my local dress agency and got two dresses. One that could look like a toast dress (no label) in a rust straight long cotton/linen that fits perfect, and then an H&M dress that when I first saw it I thought it was an African print fabric in greens/browns, long, with cut out on the back and fits me perfectly. Both are very suitable for scorching days.

what is that with Eurostar, and giving promotions only from one side of the journey??

Voltefarce · 22/06/2023 07:44

When I lived in Germany, and was back and forth to the Uk a lot, it was sometimes cheaper to buy two Uk-France returns on the channel tunnel. And only use one leg of each.

banivani · 22/06/2023 12:12

Genuinely so pleased to read about Ctrl's perfect outfit the other day, sounds wonderful to just feel "this was perfect" 😍

And Red's boots are so great, precisely the type of thing I would never go for but they really are elevating footwear!

Speaking of footwear, I've had a hankering for Mexican huarache sandals because I've really been keen on something plaited/braided. Does anyone have any insight into these? They have second hand ones in Beyond Retro and I tried on a pair (=the only pair that fit) yesterday and they were probably, officially, formally, a little big. Does this matter? Easy to slip on, and a bit rattly. They show your toes and mine are barely seen. Also the question of price v. condition.

Am so blown away that NL don't have catalogue brands. I can't imagine this.

I don't suit full skirts either, really, but fuck it I'm at the stage where getting dressed is good, finding style is optional. I get compliments for the COS skirt I got, because it's bright and summery I suppose, but I feel wide as a door and not in a good way. Realise when I see my whole body in the mirror that it's not terrible, but on the whole I'm better in skirts like the dhal one Shang posted, not this "gathered rectangle" one. Otoh skirts like the dhal one can potentially be a bit staid, and since that's me all over I need to balance it out. Love that Poppy loved the SS skirt!

Brits are very like Swedes in many ways I find. Any sort of serious fashion discussion on a Swedish forum would 10000000% go the way of the SS threads. "What do you care, wear what you want bla bla". That's not the point, like.

Please join in, newbies! Hounds, I really loved your post on reading these threads, it was really sweet.😊

Bo, I think 70s look is probably really good on you. I think it can strike rich bitch in a little more of a bohemian way? 😉And LOVE the jacket.

Also loved Poppy's vintage link. Gorgeous. The coats!

Red have we bought the same dress from H&M??? From the designer collaboration?

banivani · 22/06/2023 12:14

the Marni collab (hands in Parisienne credentials, could not remember designer, had to root the dress out to check)

Redandblue11 · 22/06/2023 16:03

Huarache sandals … are they really spot on comfortable Bani? I personally do not compromise on foot comfort as I know that if is not 100% I will not wear them.
so the fact that you say they are a bit big … makes me wonder.
I love the style of those type of sandals btw, but I think for me would probably be not comfortable, unless they are better made than what I imagine.

My H&M dress is not any designer collab, it is preloved and not sure what season; but I love the idea of both having the same/similar dress! (We already have 80s colourful jackets with Flo)

what cos skirt did you have? I don’t remember, but I can definitely imagine you in a statement skirt.

my dress - which I have worn exactly 1 time because in all honesty it’s the bottom fabric I love and I don’t love the zebra part, also I need Occasions - is attached. I bear about as much resemblance to the model as you might imagine, but hey ho. Also attaching pic of Cos skirt - it’s very big, but also very summery and light, so perfect summer skirt. I’m just ignoring that slight feeling of dirndl milk maid I have.

also attaching photo of huaraches from shop. Who knows if they’re still there, but since I didn’t feel WOW I didn’t get them… I’d like to hear from a connoisseur if slightly large shoes are a sure fire way to get blisters or if it’s fine, you know? It’s be a cheap way to try them out. There’s a German Etsy shop that sells them that I have my eye on, but I obviously prefer to try on in person.

I love that dress bani, I insist that you wear it.

Red I think I remember trying on a dress like that in H&M, really liking the print but not wanting a cutout at the back and walking away in the end. I'm not sure how long ago that was.

And thank you also Red for sparing my Vuitton blushes. I can honestly say I pay more attention to gardening chat than I do luxury bag brands, so I hadn't even noticed that they'd branched out into clothing. Pharrell Williams does sound like an eye catching appointment but I imagine that's partly the intention.

I'm sorry but I'm going to be all prophet of doom about too big sandals bani. I tried it once only, my feet were sliding all over the place and I ended up rubbing off patches of skin which was even more painful than blisters.

NatashaDancing · 22/06/2023 17:46

Do you think these dresses are sufficiently dissimilar to not be mad to own both?

Grin There surely aren’t enough fields, @NatashaDancing!

Thanks, @banivani - although, despite reading with attention, I saw the words ‘Marni collab’ and rushed to H&M …Hmm (I recall havering over a Uniqlo / Marni mash-up, last year I think. In the end I didn’t buy anything, which was probably a good thing as a couple of people - a quarter of my age - in the group I was part of (work-ish thing, S of France) had lots of it.

Why did no one warn me about kilts? AngryWhy had I not understood that the incessant jokes about what people wear under them were actually based on an important truth? There I was, proudly striding around a certain academic city earlier this week in my splendid La Fetiche bargain, thinking how cool I looked … And then some fool, somewhere on this planet, must have imagined the rumour of a slight breeze in Timbuktu several centuries ago - and my skirt; cruel, disloyal thing that it turned out to be, took on a mind of its own and decided the brilliant minds thereabouts really wanted to see what Primark occasionally sells me. botemp · 22/06/2023 20:13

I'm just back from Antwerp with a big bag full of Dries van Noten goodies (fabric sale, I've even got something for an origami bag) so just catching up to Bani calling me a bitch 🤔😉

WRT shoe sizes, I always size up in summer shoes so I'm all for it but I size up because of the high arches so probably not the best advice, best listen to Flo. Random tangent, I did try on the uninspired Teva x Chloe sandals the other day and while they're as boring as predicted, they were ridiculously comfy, the sole was like walking on marshmallows. They're the Hurricane something something model, I need to see if the more normal priced ones are just as comfy.

Red, I've attached the seller's picture, I had sort of assumed they'd taken it in the shade and that the colours would be more vibrant but they're a bit more interiors fabric in color iywkim. I don't think it'll be a learn to love it thing, but I'll give it a few days and at the very least I'll copy the pattern to recreate in a fabric I do like.
