An appealing shape, made in upholstery or curtain fabric perhaps, although I like the colourway.

Lovely to see you pop in bani.

Forgot to mention, pleased to see my wishes have been heard as there's a (partial) Tina Turner fashion exhibition coming up at the V&A, although considering the timing, I suspect this was already in the works and is just good press packaging. If anyone goes, let me know if it's worth a trip to London for, please?

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jun/20/tina-turner-outfits-v-and-a-diva-exhibition-prince-elton-john-bob-mackie-singer

I'm going to it in July but because I'll be in London rather than making a special trip which I did for The Golden Age of Couture, Ballgowns, Dior and Shoes.

Redandblue11 · 23/06/2023 07:51

ah that dress bani! Yes, I remember it very well.
mine is a lot more predictable, safe

surely those dresses are completely different Natasha?
I always loved that style, but that would not suit me at all.

it is a great shape dress Bo, I am sure you will recreate something so good. Very jealous of your fabrics and the potential of an origami bag.

Redandblue11 · 23/06/2023 07:53

I will also try to go to the diva exhibition, thinking if July/Aug might be a possibility. Or to leave it for the autumn…

botemp · 23/06/2023 08:32

Well I might need to eat my words Red I tried on the dress this morning again and paired it with an angular cross body bag and it's much improved, seems it needs something to break up the pattern a bit. I'm still not 100% on it but I'll see how often it actually gets worn this summer before moving it on (or not).

Btw, before I forget again as it was on last weekend and I thought of you. Every third weekend of June they have an open garden route thing here, it's all houses on the grand canals, mostly private (offices and homes so you get to see a bit of those too) and a few museums JIC you want to make use of those one sided Eurostar offers Envy

have to say thank you for being so kind and say welcome back when I popped back in ❤️ it’s really so sweet of you!

bo that is a tricky dress. The pattern is treading a fine line. I hope it falls down on the right side! And let the record show I was QUOTING you on “rich bitch” 😂

Natasha the dresses are both extremely different and terribly alike. I can’t say. What matters more, pattern or shape? If I love a shape I do like to have it in all the iterations so wrong person to ask.

Ctrl the kilt mishap is a nightmare. People must have been displaying their bits a lot in ancient times when all was drapey bits of fabric!

botemp · 23/06/2023 08:59

I know, I know, Bani, I was merely living up to the moniker Grin and while I'm still in bitch mode, wear the Marni dress more often already, tsk tsk.

Yes, fine line is probably correct for the Raey dress, it needs a lot of accesorising and I'm generally not a fan of clothes that make you work for it.

Oh, on the kilt, I was wondering if this was why they have that pouch thingy (sorry Scots) to wear on top? I mean, I always assumed it was a look at my penis thing, but maybe it's functional? Anyhow, I'd see it as an opportunity to buy a new bag...

Making note of open gardens in NL! (A tricky date though… as the closest person to me has his bday that week…)

A sporran. It''s a functional bag as there are no pockets in a kilt.

The "nothing worn under a kilt" is nonsense. If for no other reason than a proper kilt is an expensive, tailor made garment - why would you want it next to bare bum and genitals?

A kilt is a very heavy garment so it is unlikely to blow up in the wind but it will swing out during ceilidh dancing.

Thank you. They are identical in shape and both have a black background but one looks almost blue because there is lots of blue in the pattern.

I love the shape of it. And it's not the first time by any means I have the same shaped dress in different iterations.

Oooh I fancy making a tiny couture dress:

www.vam.ac.uk/event/RAbWgEBlVD/o23046-couture-hand-sewing-sat-am-aut-23

Having seen the exquisite tiny dresses in the Dior exhibition in Harrods at Christmas, I'm tempted.

ThisNameIsDifferentFromTheLast · 23/06/2023 22:31

It's a great class MmePoppy, Rowena, the lady who teaches it is fabulous and a tonne of fun.

They normally have some great guest speakers / insights into the displays as well.

NatashaDancing · 23/06/2023 22:36

I'm ambivalent about posting this picture as it might be well into crass Marie Antoinette let them eat cake territory. I have a dress from Oska which my husband calls my Dorothea Lange Dust Bowl dress, but which we both like a lot. I've been looking at Dorothea Lange photos this evening.

This photograph is Dorothea Lange. The young woman, despite her poverty, (which is obvious on the uncropped version of the photograph) is beautiful and graceful. That dress would be snapped up on Net-a-Porter

Redandblue11 · 23/06/2023 23:02

Well Natasha I would be the first one to snap such a dress if I saw it and fitted me.
I saw a not so dissimilar one is back and white checked but I needed a tiny bit inch or two to fit round my waist, I could see from the top that it could have looked amazing snob.

Redandblue11 · 23/06/2023 23:03

Autocorrect- black and white

botemp · 24/06/2023 09:08

Ha, I was going to say Name had done courses with her and highly recommended it but she's beaten me to it. I keep meaning to sign up and never getting round to it, shall try to remember again but must check dates. I had also been looking at the summer programs at the American Fashion school in Paris but that was part of the recent gas blow up so probably for the best I forgot about that.

I was reading this article this morning and didn't think it would be an S&B article but it kind of reminded me of some of the attitudes that clash on here. Anyhow, I'm just sharing it because this thread is getting pretty full and I'll need a new title for the next one and 'A Sin of Pride' sounded rather fitting with all the discussions on here lately.

The dress in that Dorothea Lange pic is beautiful, as is the young woman. Amazing how fresh and pristine the dress looks. Who made it I wonder and (assuming it's her best dress) for what occasion?

That V&A course looks great but, for that kind of money, I think I want something I'd go on to adapt in full size and, while it's a lovely dress, it's not really my thing. I know you'd learn transferable skills and so forth but I don't think I'd have the same motivation.
Is it my imagination or are they charging as much for their online courses now as for face-to-face?

Floisme · 24/06/2023 09:13

Soz cross post with bo. I'll read that article now!

botemp · 24/06/2023 09:20

Yes they are pricey, I think last time I probed Name about it I came to the conclusion the courses on her own site were better value for money, but more of an outlay upfront.

That dress is gorgeous, bani, I'm sure I remember you posting about it before.

My voya tevas that you recommended bo, from a few years ago have finally given up. The squashy soles have squashed too much and not bounced back (apparently the same thing happens with sketchers, dd1 was told by the podiatrist), so under the big toe is a huge crater. I have just ordered some silver greek sandals from Etsy and I will report back. Sadly, the Etsy shop I used to use appears permanently closed.

NatashaDancing if both dresses are very you and you like them, I would keep them <enables>.

My most recent purchase is a navy jumpsuit from Great Plains. I will try to post a picture. I own a lot of navy but I do wear it. It came last week and I've already worn it twice!

quirkychick · 24/06/2023 10:23

I think it's this jumpsuit. It was in the BrandAlley sale. The picture's not great, but it's lovely, heavy cotton jersey and fits beautifully. It replaces a Selected Femme one that was all style and no substance.

I'm not a jump suit person but that's nice. I think because it's casual and functional (that's not intended as an insult !) and being itself rather than an "alternative to a dress".

quirkychick · 24/06/2023 17:15

Natasha, thank you, a lot of my clothes are casual and functional tbh. I think in this case it hopefully is also versatile and stylish (looks better in rl as has better shape than the slightly blurry photo).

I am not a massive dress person or floral person, but a few dark florals have been sneaking into my wardrobe lately. Not strictly florals but I have navy (again) background with purply palm print, harems on today that I bought in despair of the heat last year. They are supposed to be harems or a jumpsuit but I need to put straps on them, as bandeau/boob tube is not my thing.

I read that article too, bo, very interesting painting.

Redandblue11 · 24/06/2023 17:54

Hi quirky, that jumpsuit is very you. Good purchase!

quirkychick · 24/06/2023 21:44

Thank you red. It is so me I have almost identical trousers 🙄
