There was definitely an influx of spambots from India a few weeks ago. It coincided with a Russian propaganda campaign all over the internet, there were definitely some scaremongering nuclear threads on here then but the other Indian spambots were just weird, copy pasting from blogs into replies on here. I've also reported some odd US fortune teller and dark web ones Confused

This batch definitely feels human though with a lot of insight of what will make MN tick. Lots of controversial threads that are at the tail end and due their natural death get revived with just the right controversial sentence to send everyone into a tizzy again. It does feel like someone with an axe to grind but it doesn't feel singular.

Or maybe it's just the dawn of a new Basic Bitches era, but in accordance with new internet lingo we shall have to call them the Basic Fascists. Pumpkin Spice Lattes for all! (Except you, Brenda).

I wonder if I'll get deleted from THAT THREAD where ProstituteHair was struck out. I haven't sworn at anyone, but may have been rude.

It's plumbed new lows of snobbery today.

banivani · 11/04/2023 12:49

Oh I just put it all down to the English being belligerent feckers (says I, fanning the flames of fighting). ;) I'm off to see if I can find the ruckus now, I'm waiting for a meeting to start so have a bit of time. Haven't been on much/at all for a while now and haven't seen any fights!

Sorry to hear about your grandmother, Bo. I find funeral wear quite difficult too, but in my head I have the idea of a dress that Would Do if I could only ever find it. I like the idea of the white accent but I wouldn't overthink it.

We've been skiing and I noticed that all the mammies walking around with prams and not skiing wore a sort of thick lined wellie that I hadn't noticed before. So that's my only recent fashion insight!

Floisme · 11/04/2023 16:12

I don't mind a bit of belligerence but this feels different somehow. Be careful out there people....

Anyway back to your post MmePoppy. I was out having lunch on Saturday too and I agree with you, all the colour and the outfits were lovely to see. Some of the young women were clearly heading on to the bars and the clubs and there were some Shock outfits. And yes, heels, lots of heels, which will dismay many on S&B but I found oddly cheering, even though I personally can't even handle M&S chunky loafers. The only downside was my own outfit - a black and white gingham top I'd found in a charity shop only the day before which wasn't a million miles away from that H&M top I'd admired online, except this Zara one covered my belly. It was perfectly appropriate but I ended up feeling vaguely annoyed with myself for not picking something more flamboyant.

Red I really like a neckscarf - tried them so many times but always ended up losing patience with them. It looks great on you.

Oh and MmePoppy we'd love to see your new dress - photo or link!

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 11/04/2023 19:16

But when someone can't ask 'What will the new trends be this summer?' without getting repeatedly told off then that's new. As you say, it doesn't feel spontaneous.

The comments underneath Jess Cartner-Morley's Saturday Guardian column (which I don't particularly rate, but that's beside the point) are always full of this. 'Trends? Trends?? Why are you letting clothing companies dictate what you wear? It's a conspiracy to make us spend more' etc etc. If Jess ventures to suggest trying a new trouser shape, she gets trashed by people who have worn the same trousers since 1982. I think it's the same kind of inverse snobbery you get around food.

botemp · 11/04/2023 19:35

Yes, 'Big Fashion' gets tossed around now as if it's an actual thing 🙄 watch out for those Bill Gates microchips in your undies.

(I'm unashamedly snobby about food though 🙈 I blame the Italian heritage in me, I wish I could be as eviscerating as a true Italian)

My shopping expedition for a white necklace went as well as predicted... It's pearls or pearls. So I've gone digging, my own pearls (pink though) which I just find too prissy, some Chanel camelias, a Net a Porter ribbon, and a leather flower I salvaged from an old bag. I like the leather flower best even though it's aged a bit in colour and the photo probably doesn't do it justice. I've given it a clean and it does look better for it. Now trying to decide whether to spend tomorrow finding a brooch pin to attach it to or order a 100 from Amazon.

I would try the leather flower on the ribbon, for just a little more white and texture, but those would be/are my preferred options.

S&B is such a catfight right now, even the handbag threads unusually seem relatively equable. I think this SS is missing some fizz, and all the must-be-told-what-to-wear posters are searching for confirmation in conformity.

Redandblue11 · 11/04/2023 20:38

I love the two flowers Bo not a surprise there but yes the leather one has something to it, and a bit of understated elegance that I really like for the occasion.

It is truly amusing to read comments under the guardian articles. All that snobbery being above fashion etc , I find it irritating. I don’t consider myself a total fashion follower but one cannot argue that some stuff is dated and some other is more ‘on trend’.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 11/04/2023 22:28

Well quite, redandblue.

Here's my new, bright, dress, a decent photo of which proved quite difficult to track down. The Marc Cain website shows it on quite a large woman, and I think it's looks better on someone short, unusually. I am short myself:

www.tlynn.no/collections/marc-cain/products/8418100-marccain-dress?variant=40249501417518

Redandblue11 · 11/04/2023 23:00

poppy the dress looks like an useful, easy to wear dress. The only thing that slightly annoys me nothing to do with the dress itself is the website that doesn’t show a proper photo of the full dress from the front and straight.
today I grabbed a denim jumpsuit from my local dress agency, it was ridiculously inexpensive as it did not have a brand and I have no clue what make it is but is a nice comfortable light weight denim.

flo I think a black and white gingham is always a winner.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 12/04/2023 07:37

I know redandblue. The only pictures I've found of the dress don't show it properly, but on me, it hits just below my knee and has a nice little flare front and back.

According to the Times (I know...), bright colours are back and actually being worn:

Office glam — are you working it at work?.

botemp · 12/04/2023 08:40

That's a very cheery dress Poppy and thanks for the share token. Incidentally I was in Massimo Dutti yesterday during my fruitless necklace search and it really struck me that they had a very clear work/weekend wear distinction in the shop where the clothes wouldn't easily interchange. It kind of felt like going back in time and I was musing whether they were going full Max Mara copycat but a surge in demand for workwear is probably a more likely explanation.

Desmond, I'm not sure it's the conformity crowd wanting to conform, or not just them anyhow. Everyone seems to be accusing everyone else of being a sheep/idiot in some form from all sides (I've lost count of the sides, and they all start sounding the same at some point, so high on moral righteousness) and when someone actually explicitly says they enjoy the very chewed up prefabricated version of following the latest trend and asking what's next they get told to wear whatever they like, but not this, that or those 🤷

I never read the comments BTL, I just peaked at JCM's most recent one. I'm 😲

Forgot to mention, I started watching Transatlantic (by the same people who made Unorthodox but a lot less bleak), the costume and set design is 10/10. 1940s Vichy France, but it's not a traditional costume drama, it's very much of today. I am still in two minds of whether that's a good thing or not, but the visual spectacle keeps me occupied enough to ignore that.

OP posts:
Floisme · 12/04/2023 10:08

I can't get a clear image unfortunately MmePoppy but the colour looks great. The gingham top is a good find Red and I'm sure I'll wear it a lot, it just felt a bit monochrome in a room full of glorious colour.

I think I like the black ribbon with the white stitching best bo - it gives off a kind of beatnik-cleric vibe but then that might not be what you want for a funeral, in which case I'd pick the leather flower. Hope the funeral goes well.

There are very few things I miss about work but I must admit, that article on dress-up-Monday made me feel slightly wistful. Maybe I should start a thread about it Wink

mm47 · 12/04/2023 15:35

Another belated vote for the leather flower on the ribbon.

And after looking at THAT thread I’m even more grateful for this one as I believe people here might not always agree but don’t rush to pick fights. (Although I might have jinxed it now🤡)

flo if you want to start a new thread on dress-up Monday 😈 let the skirmishing begin!

botemp · 12/04/2023 15:54

Well surely it's down to how we non-English keep you beligerent lot in check 😉 Also, reverse psychology on Flo works well 😀

There's an enlightening thread on another board, turns out I'm not such a conspiracy theorist after all. I'm deliberately being vague, for reasons.

The black ribbon is a flatter black than the clothes so it looks a bit dead, leather flower looks a bit livelier when I'm wearing it. I've got brooch supplies and I now hope I've got the DIY skills to make it workable.

OP posts:
Floisme · 12/04/2023 16:00

I can't really though can I? I'm retired, it's not my world any more. It would be like joining in an argument about Vinted when I don't use Vinted, oh hang on....
But first I'm off to look for this conspiracy thread. I need it.

botemp · 12/04/2023 16:03

I'll PM you Flo

I've just come across this beautiful dress by a 1939s designer I'd never heard of, Eve Lutyens, on one of my favourite blogs:

godsandfoolishgrandeur.blogspot.com/2023/04/a-career-from-biochemistry-to.html

Quite a woman!

Now to search out that JCM thread...

Redandblue11 · 12/04/2023 20:06

thanks for that times article poppy I can understand the desire to go ‘back’ in certain areas and clothing seems an appropriate thing to pick.

That is an interesting dress you shared in the linked post above too.

I am leaving Flo and Bo to go and cat fight 😉

4plusthehound · 12/04/2023 22:03

Hi all,

So sorry Bo. When my grandmother died I went in my school uniform. I think my mum did that as she could not think or organize! It was a lifetime ago.

I think the flower looks beautiful.

There is something about the deliberate way you all dress yourselves and think about clothes that really inspire me. I love the element of ritual. I always read but rarely post. The chats, observations, and discussions are too good to interrupt. The article on the Age of Average really resonated as I have been so uninspired for so long . It made me perk up a bit - it is not me!! :)

Re the "mood" or feeling around here - I think that people on a particular side of a modern debate are very present and deliberate. This place has never been crazy. Intense and robust yes but not crazy. The horrible answers given to fairly banal questions seem very deliberate to me. Designed to create the "bitches" atmosphere, and to discredit. I try to join those threads, be reasonable, and ignore.

I would hate to loose Mumsnet to be honest!

Sorry - as you were!

Always Sunny Reaction GIF

I've PMed you Hound, and I'm not off cat fighting Red 😂, it's more like below, I'm putting all the puzzle pieces together and now all the enlightening bits of that thread have been deleted which isn't helping the whole conspiracy theory mood (not sure if they were still there when I PMed you Flo).

Anyhow, yes, it's never been 'crazy' on here hound, but it feels it now. There's echos of when Trump was president and I always had to look at the news with my eyes half closed as it was all so unpredictable. Tone is always difficult to perceive just in text but it's become even harder at the moment. I was really taken aback by the tone of a regular good egg on this board, it really came across as unpleasant, but wasn't meant like that, apparently, but it's basically eroded the bit of charity you need for others to discuss reasonably.

The 3rd flower is beautiful bo crisply delineated and modern feeling - I believe that’s the leather one?
i don’t feel, looking around, like office wear has changed since 2019. It’s the same old mixed bag of corporate stuff really from where I’m sitting. I don’t know if that’s a shame or not actually.
