Oh no, I've yet to venture into the city centre. I assume the secondhand shops are closed today and tomorrow. Maybe I'll venture in early tomorrow before the crowds get here but waiting until Tuesday is probably the most sensible. The funeral is Friday so I've got time to doddle but a Vinted delivery would probably arrive too late.

Here is a photo the silk neck scarves I got in the vintage fair.
I got this small brooch too, which I am thinking in possibly wearing as a trio or a small group? Not sure yet but attracted me so I got it.

X-post again with Bo. Of course shops closed!

Floisme · 10/04/2023 10:26

Some lovely prints there Red. Are they the small-ish squares or long and drapey?

ToEllewithIt · 10/04/2023 11:03

The shirt is lovely botemp, pity it's sold. It's rare here to buy something specifically for a funeral as they happen so quickly that you'd really have to go into a physical shop the day after the death. We also go to so many funerals that a specific outfit wouldn't usually carry so much weight of an individual loss with it.

EffortlessDesmond · 10/04/2023 11:07

I bought a lovely coat for DMIL's funeral, and then she left her body to science, so I have only worn it once (another funeral, but one I was chumming my DM to where I hardly knew the deceased). Pity about the white shirt, bo. As you say, not meant to be.

botemp · 10/04/2023 11:28

Funerals are very individual here, either the deceased has it all planned with a funeral director before they die or left behind some sort of instructions or an indication of music and who to ask to speak. Not very religious anyhow and sometimes some very questionable music choices 😶

I've always wondered about the Irish and their funeral customs, Elle, is it something that goes way back and got merged/appropriated into Christianity or is it more recent?

I did dig up a Cefinn shirt I got on Vinted for ridiculous little money that I don't wear too often. My GM would approve of the bargain factor and I can wear it with a silk bias slip dress underneath that I made myself, my GM was always super proud of anything I made so that sort of all feels right. Still figuring out the white aspect, I found this crappy discoloured necklace (I think it's from a dress up box), with a broken clasp but it's good enough to give an idea of how a white necklace might work.

This is the point where I think finding a white necklace that isn't just a string of pearls shouldn't be that hard...

Do you specifically want to avoid pearls bo? Would your grandma approve of several pearl necklaces at once, Chanel style?

botemp · 10/04/2023 11:52

It feels a bit too prim with just pearls, and lots of Chanel style would be too much, I feel. I'm thinking something more contemporary, maybe some wild pearls would work though, something like this but not at that price. I do quite like how flat white the necklace I have is though, it's very stark in a way pearls just aren't.

OP posts:
Floisme · 10/04/2023 12:00

I sense a comeback on the way for pearls, but yeah this isn't the right time. Hope you find something.

botemp · 10/04/2023 12:07

Yes, pearls are definitely resurfacing but I don't think it'll be in the Chanel/traditional style. Same way lace is creeping back in but it's still somewhat stuck in an existential crisis.

OP posts:
Floisme · 10/04/2023 12:12

I'd be interested in how you think a pearls revival will look bo - not now, but another time, when you haven't got other stuff to think about.

timeisnotaline · 10/04/2023 12:19

White jade? I guess you probably don’t have time. I love pearls I confess, I love the depth of their gleam and how they warm up on your skin. There is so much modern jewellery as well will baroque pearls and seed pearls.
I hope it goes well bo, funerals can be strange things.

botemp · 10/04/2023 12:19

Ha, I've got too much time on my hands, hence I'm here on MN atm. If I were rethinking pearls, maybe use them like chains, almost? Or just go full maximalist, pearls on pearls but sort of build 3d shapes with them as opposed to layering necklaces, pearls attached to pearls. I'm just not sure where pearls land atm, ethically/environmentally iykwim? That might actually be a stumbling block until there's a viable bioplastic alternative or similar.

I have this in seed pearls and gold from Lucy folk, a Melbourne designer, jewellery primarily but does clothing too. I love it. That photo is an astonishingly unattractive view of under my chin but I had already left the room 😖

botemp · 10/04/2023 12:28

Xpost with time, thanks, yes, I think I dread my family more than the funeral at this point. They're all fine individually but when my father and his siblings are all together it's exhausting, they all revert right back to childhood.

I'll have a Google for white jade, and for the proper term seed pearl, thanks, but something I can buy locally is probably going to be most likely. I've also wondered about just hand stitching a thin silk ribbon on, sort of a reverse Lagerfeld.

That necklace is great, btw, I don't think anyone's under chin stands a chance from that angle.

That necklace is beautiful! I love misshapen pearls and have been trying to do the neck mess thang with pearls and semi precious beads.

Hi Flo, the pink polka dot is the perfect neck length, just attaching a quick photo for demonstration purposes; the Liberty one you can do two rounds around your neck and the other floral one is a small square that can do a very small around the neck or maybe I will wear in my head for a ponytail or around a handbag .
neck scarves is something I have always liked.

Times - that is a great pearl necklace.

Bo , the sound of your outfit sounds very appropriate and you will look very good in it, I hope you find the right white necklace.

I was tidying up jewellery the other day and I have some broken fresh water pearl necklaces that I have been wondering how to redesign into a more contemporary look. So great ideas here!

MmePoppySeedDefage · 11/04/2023 06:26

Bonjour tout le monde. I'm enjoying the talk of pearls - I do love a tangle of pearl necklaces, and often wear them like that.

Well, I've just been in Durham & Newcastle and loved how much colour (young) women wore up there when out and about, and how much effort they put into their outfits. They were out in Durham on a sunny Saturday afternoon and were in dressy dresses and heels which is some commitment given how hilly it is and the fact there are lots of cobbled streets.

I love colour myself and had a fabulous time in Fenwicks finding and trying on some lovely and colourful clothes - I was spoiled for choice. It's bizarre - I live near London but almost never go into a London department store and have a fitting room full of clothes I really like. I ended up buying two dresses but returned one as the consensus of my menfolk was that it looked too much like a nighty.

Floisme · 11/04/2023 07:42

I've not been for a while MmePoppy but yeah, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool all take dressing up very seriously don't they - much better for people watching than London.
Speaking of which, S&B has been like the Big Market on a Friday night these last few days - what's going on?

botemp · 11/04/2023 08:00

I've been going with people mainlining some sort of alcohol filled Easter eggs 😱 but MN has been weird for a few weeks now.

I have a tinfoil hat theory about it but it doesn't make much sense to me. There's been a noticeable revival and new threads that are guaranteed to spark controversy and a lot of how awful users of MN are (ideas about weight and food is a constant choice, not the usual you're all so mean). It looks coordinated to me, but MN itself is not that organised to do it for the clicks, and it wouldn't be their thing anyhow. So that leaves a bunch of disgruntled long time users who just want to shit on a place they once liked, or only like when people are at each other's throats? It doesn't make sense to me, I'd say it's a general internet thing, polarisation, etc. but it feels noticeably intense on here for weeks now and it doesn't feel 'natural', it really was a sudden influx of it.

OP posts:
Floisme · 11/04/2023 08:12

Yeah there have always been arguments, and don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to one myself as I'm sure you all know. But when someone can't ask 'What will the new trends be this summer?' without getting repeatedly told off then that's new. As you say, it doesn't feel spontaneous.

ShangPie · 11/04/2023 09:24

Morning all! Love the pearl chat, and hopefully you find the perfect outfit for your GM’s funeral bo 💐

Ive also noticed that MN seems weird recently and I was wondering if there’s been an influx of new spambot-trolls posters using ChatGPT to generate posts? There are suddenly a lot of odd posts, whoever is making them.

Just in case the robots are reading…

I just had a nose in some of the other S&B thread and blimey! Not sure what is happening there. Somehow does not feel like bots to me, but I am not sure what it feels like either.
