I know what you mean Flo about that jacket. It is a bit underwhelming. Sorry it didn't work out!

botemp · 18/01/2022 20:26

Ooh licorice chocolate, despite declaring Bani mad when she first mentioned it, I'm now a true convert. I've recently discovered Søstrene Grene sell chocolate covered almonds rolled in salmiak powder, they're dangerously addictive.

I'm cautiously becoming more optimistic I might actually be able to go to the MH sample sale. I'm not really that interested in MH clothes but I'll take any excuse to travel.

Ohh! Is a parisienne meet up on the horizon! Fingers crossed

ShangPie · 18/01/2022 20:46

Could March work for a tentative rendezvous des Parisiennes a Londres?

(Tentative is a word forever associated with my A Level French teacher Madame Lepinois, who pronounced it ‘tent-ay-tive’)

banivani · 19/01/2022 12:29

Perhaps when the seller is selling things so he/she can do up the room? Thank you Red for sharing that - priceless!

Glad the doubting Thomasinas have learnt to appreciate the finer sweets. ;) Salmiak is very addictive once you have a taste for it. We can get dates rolled in salmiak powder here - makes you feel virtuous almost.

I've fallen down a rabbit hole of reading trouser fitting posts by instagram user @ithacamaven who is promoting fitting trousers "top down, center out". Essentially I think a cross between paper patterns and draping. My self drafting experiments are boring me, I can't get them finished. So am again considering buying a pattern but then have to decide which one.

Red and whites/beiges is so nice. Such a completely different vibe to red and black, I love it!

Kim Jong Flo! Grin Sorry about the jacket though.

Very optimistic planning for March meetups, don't know if I'd be so brave. Grin But I am/have perhaps been overly cautious in planning travels.

botemp · 19/01/2022 13:00

I think it's only the Dutch and the Scandis who enjoy salmiak. We have a special version of those Napoleon sour candies which has a core of salmiak instead, quickest way to unfriend a foreigner here by offering one unaware as they cry out in horror at the full hit of it all at once.

I don't really know what she means with top down, center out, the Instagram account isn't making me any wiser but as a non user I can't see stories so I assume it's hidden in there. Get a pattern already, I'll happily give useless input into which one you should get Grin

I've been overly cautious with travel too, probably why I'm happy to revert into the complete opposite end of it now. I've had a bit of sticker shock from current hotel prices in London though for approximate dates, and all the extra surcharges for cancelling and breakfast. Some rooms don't even have windows, how is that legal. Over here and surrounding countries everything is free to cancel up to the day to encourage bookings. I'm happy to pencil in a MH meetup but I'm not booking anything anytime soon, I'll wait out the potential fallout of BJ as partying PM and the omicrone wave here. Also need to annoy MH for exact dates, I assume it'll be around 24th of March going by previous dates but could also be the week after.

My son, who has a pretty easy going disposition, once booked a hotel room without a window to save a tenner. He never did it again. That is all.

Speaking of easy going people, I'm half tempted to name change to Kim Yong-Flo but I'm a bit worried he might find out and hunt me down.

And ha ha at me having any chance of hanging on to my Margaret Howell funds until March! Meet up is a lovely idea though - I'm still envious of the V&A trip - but who really knows. Probably the later it happens, the better for me.

I've turned my attention to the latest Uniqlo U preview I know it usually disappoints but there's a men's overshirt jacket which, despite the stupid name, might just meet my requirements. It comes in XXS which sounds promising but I think U tends to run bigger than mainstream Uniqlo so maybe not. There's a nice tailored jacket too - the women's version looks too fussy for my taste although they do have a yellow oversize shirt that's inexplicably calling me. No fabric information on any of it though so I'm not getting excited.

Floisme · 19/01/2022 14:01

Kim Jong-Flo! Shock He really will hunt me down now, won't he?

banivani · 19/01/2022 14:21

It's nice to have known you, Flo.

I've stayed in a windowless hotel room in Spain. IMO no windows are only acceptable if you're staying in one of those cave dwelllings.

Uniqlo U preview! I see the gaucho trousers are back! More controversy Grin What's a baker trouser? Quite like the knitted sneakers and might try to get another pair of jeans and the boatneck jumper is quite nice. Sludge colours of course.

Please do recommend patterns, I'm so indecisive. Her idea is that you hang the waistband on yourself where you want the waist to be and fit one trouser leg on and make note of alterations beginning from the waistband. A lot of altering instructions say that you should alter the crotch curve and she says this compromises the design. Instead you need to just check if you need more fabric to reach the waistband. I think. I have a throwaway Insta account just to follow stuff.

botemp · 19/01/2022 14:22

He does seem the type to hang out in Pedants' Corner Grin

Yeah no window in normal times sounds like a punishment, in pandemic times it sounds downright dangerous.

Ooh I like the coat and the coat shirt dress but Uniqlo u is always a disappointment for me so I refuse to get excited about it. I'm also still Hmm over their customer service. Apparently it launches Jan 28 in the US so you'll be able to see fabric composition then.

X-post with Bani, ah she's not a pattern designer, I don't know much about random trouser pattterno. That sounds very complicated to me, but it does make sense to go with that if you're not interested in drafting from scratch. I agree that with altering just the crotch you'll end up with an odd fit, most notably when you're sitting down. I do wish women's crotches were lower though, why do men get all the dangling space.

Flo, or should I say Kim. I'm sorry the MHL jacket didn't suit. Have you ever looked at the Kin jackets? I have a few of them and can really recommend. They only seem to have a rather alarming shade of blue right now, but they always do them in black and navy, and then later they do them in a cotton linen mix - and then corduroy too. Really good quality and not in the least North Korean!

jacket

Floisme · 19/01/2022 17:24

So Lemaire didn't get the memo about Gaucho trousers. No idea what baker trousers are either but I do want some off-white ones and I don't want to spend loads on them cos I'll probably trash them, plus the second hand ones I find are normally stained and generally grim. So I'll be following them too.

No I haven't looked at Kin jackets - thanks faustina that's a good idea.
Toast have also got one in their 'New ins' that's the same price as the MH was in the sale and that I'm going to track. It's a small check pattern so might not be as versatile as I'd like, although it could actually work better than a navy that's the wrong shade of navy.

I guess Cos is another.

I don't think I'm ready for this draping business, bani - I'm lost already. Patterns all the way for me.

ThisNameIsDifferentFromTheLast · 19/01/2022 22:36

Sorry for not replying to your last question Bo I'm terrible with forum posting on a regular basis.

I try to match thread to fabric content where possible, especially with silk as a heavy poly can cut through it. I haven't heard of using silk for leather, I know the tannins will destroy cotton but I'm not sure if the same is true with silk. I'd say weight of thread would be the biggest issue. Silk threads do tend to be lighter.

I do like the look of the wide leg jeans and the baker pants on the Uniqlo preview, but sizing and postage issues will probably prevent me from purchasing.

Bani I've a pattern for you since you love lined trousers, the only issue is it's in Russian. It's a bit win some, lose some with the patterns.

banivani · 20/01/2022 08:30

Thank you Name! The Russian is less of a problem for me than the fact that there is no front view or line drawing Hmm so I think the target audience for that pattern must be more advanced people than myself. Well remembered that I like a lining - or rather that I don't like pockets and humans showing through the trousers, things that having a lining will fix. ;)

Ooo we're so close to the end of the thread!

I feel I have to describe the method of fitting trousers above in a way to do her justice ... I'll just link to a post and see if you see what appeals to me in the idea www.instagram.com/p/CQJ3QYksyi_/ . My troubles with spending upwards of 20 euro on a pattern is the fact that I know it won't fit out of the printer so to speak. I know I will have to adjust, and this is what I find so difficult, esp since I have no-one to help me. So I'm attracted to a way that seems to be easier to do by myself and is quite visual in a way that the "remove an inch here and add that inch to this part" systems are not.

The Uniqlo U coat shirt dress didn't even merit a second glance from me until I looked at how they styled it in the lookbook. Proving that styling/how you wear it matters!
