This is great - good on David Lewis. Shows the Labour Party's policy up for the nonsense it is.

If any man can say he's a woman and self identify as such.... I can't believe I am even typing these words.

It's just not possible to change your biological sex. Surely common sense is going to win through this madness?

Thanks for this ,encouraging to see Davids support for the obvious ......I can't believe I'm typing this either.

Noqonterfy · 22/05/2018 10:53

This is brilliant. And one I feel confident to share on FB. (Getting braver)!

Foxglovesandprimroses · 22/05/2018 10:56

Another good article by James Kirkup.

OldmanOfTheWeb3 · 22/05/2018 11:00

Now THIS is how one properly extracts the Michael! Great article, too.

Bravo. (Or Brava).

Absolutely brilliant GrinI hope common sense prevails but to be honest the TRAs are doing a great job of shutting down any real disscusion about them as being homophobic/ transphobic or the work of TERFs. Before MN opened my eyes to what was happening I would have been supporting this nonsense thinking 'why can't someone identity as what they want? It's a basic human right surely' but I now see they want their happiness at the expense of the safety and wellbeing of biological women the very same people they claim they want to be, yet can't see our point of view!

ScarletBegonias · 22/05/2018 11:08

I'd love to see James's piece appear in one of the mass circulation dailies!

fmsfms · 22/05/2018 11:09

beaten to posting this!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 22/05/2018 11:13

This is the first I've heard of Ms Lewis. Well, it isn't Wednesday yet is it, so Mr Lewis. I will follow the story with interest.

SleepIsForTheWeek · 22/05/2018 11:14

Any shouting of transphobia from the TRA yet? No? Now, I wonder why that is?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 22/05/2018 11:16

It shows that the proposed 'I say therefore I am' is open to all sorts of nonsense.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 22/05/2018 11:18

Good on you, David! 👍

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 22/05/2018 11:20

Just came on to see if anyone else had picked up on this. Good job Mr Lewis.

Mxyzptlk · 22/05/2018 11:40

I almost didn't look at this thread as 'Man standing as Labour Women's Officer' is so normal nowadays.

Foxglovesandprimroses · 22/05/2018 11:46

I was two-thirds of the way through the article before I realised it was a publicity stunt. Says a lot about Labour really.

Foxglovesandprimroses · 22/05/2018 11:47

Wonder what LM and Heather thinggy think of Mr/Ms Lewis?

Kyanite · 22/05/2018 12:00

This isn't just Labour...the Conservatives have already put this into law with their 2015 guidance notes for the 2010 Equality Act, which makes gender reassignment a protected characteristic (including where the person is only just starting to transition). All the parties support transwomen being women on their say so. We're already a long way down the rabbit hole.

DialsMavis · 22/05/2018 12:01

I just came here to post this too! I will be watching media a TRA reactions with interest

Popchyk · 22/05/2018 12:03

"Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman. Except in the Labour Party, when it’s surprisingly easy. "

Love James Kirkup.

Radfempirate · 22/05/2018 12:08

Im a man every friday. My 9 year old son suggested woman Wednesday to highlight how silly (his words) self ID is. He's loving this! Well done Mr Lewis :D

DodoPatrol · 22/05/2018 12:08

Hmm, I don't like this bit:
'In the end, we need to have a compromise. And a good compromise is one where both sides are equally unhappy.'

Why? Because I suspect he's thinking that women and transwomen will need to find a compromise, not that men and transwomen will need to do so.

I hope I'm wrong.

NotARegularPenguin · 22/05/2018 12:16

Sadly I don't think the labour party will care if he's trying to show them up or not.

ElfrideSwancourt · 22/05/2018 12:19

I've shared it on fb - it's a really good balanced piece can't see it would upset anyone and don't actually care if it does- if it makes even one person think I'd be delighted.

Noqonterfi · 22/05/2018 12:23

Good point Dodo. I don't like that either. As the compromise should be between men and transwomen. Not transwomen and biological women. I'm not intending to be equally unhappy that's for sure. This isn't a problem for biological women to solve or back down on.
