This is great - good on David Lewis. Shows the Labour Party's policy up for the nonsense it is.

If any man can say he's a woman and self identify as such.... I can't believe I am even typing these words.

It's just not possible to change your biological sex. Surely common sense is going to win through this madness?

Waiting for @Crispbutty to return to this thread to continue the discussion.

gendercritter · 22/05/2018 15:16

Hang on, I thought this was the biggest fear of the anti-trans brigade, that actual men would try to take womens positions?

Crisp, you've slightly missed the point love

He is making a point about how ludicrous self-id is. He is demonstrating what will happen if anyone can be whatever they say they are. He is highlighting how self-id can be abused.

Also, anti-trans brigade? Link to one post, just one, on here which demonstrates people campaigning for trans people to not be allowed to exist.

Terfing · 22/05/2018 15:21

Someone on Twitter said that men are already allowed to be women's officers? Confused

Popchyk · 22/05/2018 15:38

Been picked up by the Telegraph

Basingstoke is Maria Miller's constituency, although she is Conservative of course.

Wonder if she'd like to comment on it?

Crispbutty · 22/05/2018 15:39

I think I’m going to have to name change. To TheOriginalCrispButty... Hmm as I keep getting name checked in error ..

LangCleg · 22/05/2018 15:42

After I looked at the NEC position and what it really meant, I thought, I’ll put my name forward for women’s officer. After all, what’s the worst that could happen? I expected them to say, ‘don’t be silly’ and politely decline my application. But they didn’t. They accepted my candidacy as valid.

Think of reading this as a civilian - ie 99% of the population - in the gender wars! How stupid does it look?!

And the thing is, to win any elections the Labour Party must win over swing voters. Making themselves a laughing stock - and outside of the various trans/GC social media bubbles, this is viewed with scornful hilarity, make no mistake - is not going to win over many people who would otherwise vote Tory. And no, it doesn't matter that Maria Miller's useless report comes from the Tory ranks. All swing voters will see is the "loony left".

Elendon · 22/05/2018 15:54

David Lewis concluded:

“I am hoping that my local party will be sensible.”

OldmanOfTheWeb3 · 22/05/2018 15:57

Any shouting of transphobia from the TRA yet? No? Now, I wonder why that is?

Actually, what I've seen is a total inability to understand it. It's like there's a complete humour bypass. Hard to believe this is real.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 22/05/2018 16:39

Or this.....

Thats better...

crispbuttyfan · 22/05/2018 16:43

Noqonterfi

You do realise nothing has actually changed, so what he is in fact doing, is something that has never actually happened since the equality law was established in 2010, except when someone wants to go through with a publicity stunt.

He's not actually serious about it, and guess what will happen??
It will be up to people to vote for him or not.... same as would happen with a trans woman....... thats democracy.

Just as unlikely, rightly or wrongly that a trans women who is 'part-time' as he puts it would be voted to be the womens officer

So if he gets voted as the womens officer I assume he will be congratulated and supported in his efforts to represent women, by everyone on this thread slating equality laws, thus completing the paradox.

TransplantsArePlants · 22/05/2018 16:47

crispbuttyfan

Yes. It's a publicity stunt. No he's not serious about it. And?

Could never happen IRL, and yet..... Lily Madigan

It's not about the part-timeness of it. It's about self-id meaning we just have to go along with what a person says about themselves.

Read the article. It explains it really well (or at least I thought it did Confused)

SuitedandBooted · 22/05/2018 16:49

Great article. Because nobody will ever abuse Self -ID, no siree....

TransplantsArePlants
Lily Madigan, was voted as womens officer, I'm sorry you don't accept Lily as a woman, and I'm sorry you don't recognise the democratic mechanisms in place in society.

regardless, labour have been clear enough about the policy of allowing trans women to be womens officers and on AWS.

And this certainly won't change that either.

I'm certainly not going to waste any further time pointlessly arguing about who is and who is not a woman, but luckily we have that democracy to let the majority decide.

Just in case it got missed, Lily was voted for in a democratic vote.
And surveys tell us time and again, the majority of women are likely to support trans women, and the minority of men in political discourse.

Wanderabout · 22/05/2018 16:58

No he's not serious about it. And?

If you look at what he says in the article, he is serious about it. He is making a political stand for women, why is that any less valid than any other women's officer's decision to self-id. His interpretation of gender identity is that he identifies as female one day a week (currently). Why is that any less valid than anyone else's? What even is gender identity anyway?

Noqonterfi · 22/05/2018 17:00

It already has happened though hasnt it. And you never know, he might make it all the way;-) just like LM did eh?

Wanderabout · 22/05/2018 17:00

Transwomen aren't the same as women. They are men who want to live their lives as though they are women (or some days of the week in this way fin some cases).

Ereshkigal · 22/05/2018 17:01

This.

TransplantsArePlants · 22/05/2018 17:01

Oh yes, he's serious about highlighting the ludicrous situation Labour and others are walking into.

No I don't think he wants to be the woman's officer

Although he'd be better at it than people who actively dislike women

Noqonterfi · 22/05/2018 17:01

And surveys tell us time and again, the majority of women are likely to support trans women

I think that is dwindling as people peak trans by the day personally.
