Boxing Day snow thread

From storm thread which talked about the complexities of tomorrow's weather:

"Merry Christmas will be really interesting to seem where gets snow tomorrow. Hilly parts of Wales, some of northern England, the midlands perhaps at times and I still think the chilterns. It depends on how heavy the precipitation is, the air it falls through and obviously the temperature. I expect some people will have rather a surprise."

And With regards to discussion about NI: "it's going to sound like a cop out but I just don't know 850hpa temps look borderline as does air temp but if the rain is heavy and falls through dry air as it evaporates it can cool the air down allowing snow to fall. ( evaporative cooling)
Often snow in the UK hangs on a knife edge with a temp swing of one or two degrees making all the difference. It makes it very difficult for councils. Put grit down too early and it gets washed away then it turns to snow and everyone blames the councils for the ensuing chaos."

I don't think things have changed since my thoughts earlier today.

Snowing in East Kent. Grin

Quite nice now in Suffolk but I hear my local town might be flooded in places. Wasn't planning on leaving the house today though.

Had roast beef Christmas day and used the leftovers to make Cornish pastie-type things a la the Mumsnet video and they are lush. Have enough ham, sausage rolls, salad, mince pies, stollen, pudding and chocs to keep us going for a week. Xmas Smile

Yay Lumpy! Xmas Grin thats because the met office removed your severe weather warning!

Is there more snow forecast for today or until the kids go back to school?

Thankyou.

Newbiecrafter · 27/12/2014 13:37

We are on surrey/London border.

Thanks
LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/12/2014 13:39

Turned to rain, then hail. Was perty though.

Last night I drove East Yorkshire to Cambridgeshire with my gran and 3 year old DTs on board. Pretty nerve wracking, started to snow probably about 50% into the journey so no turning back. BBC predicted nothing at all before I set off. Should have checked in here first. That will teach me. One really dodgy moment in the middle of the wolds, nothing for miles - no other cars or farm houses and almost ground to a halt.Something I wouldn't want to repeat but need to do leg 2 tonight back home to Sussex. May delay, my nerves can't handle another night.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/12/2014 14:17

new warnings for snow for a good part of the east coast and ice warnings uk wide.

I'll start another thread shortly when I'm on my pc about prospects between now and going back to school. Mn and iPads don't always work very well together.

Oxtail I'm sorry that you had such a rubbish journey. Glad you got there safely.

Lots of trees down here with branches etc on the road

WhispersOfWickedness · 27/12/2014 14:28

Ooo, it mentions the Wolds specifically in the latest warning, we'd better get some this time!

GloriaSmud · 27/12/2014 14:28

Snow beginning to melt here (Leicester) but still a covering on cars/grass ~ 3.1C. DH went north, Loughborough way this morning and only 3-4 miles to the north, there's loads more snow. It goes to show how localised snow can be sometimes!
(I don't know whether OYBBK will think the same but I think a week on Monday (5th Jan) could be interesting when it comes to snow. 'Tis long, long way into the future at the moment though.)

OYBBK - I would like to thank you for a very smooth journey home, thanks to the principle of sods law. (very prepared for getting stuck so almost one of the fastest times for that journey) Xmas Grin

Not so much as a flake here (East Renfrewshire) but the sky is as clear as a bell. Beautiful for stargazing, even though it's freezing.

BlackeyedSantaStuckUpAChimney · 29/12/2014 22:06

just arrived home in the west mids... and there is no snow! we had a great time in the e mids though. plenty there, as reported up thread. some was still lying today. though my snowman was brutally killed by ds throwing it against a wall.

atticusclaw · 30/12/2014 11:05

We still have seven inches in the East Mids. With the temperatures today there's no chance of it disappearing. Might impact on NYE plans!

BeHoHoHove · 30/12/2014 20:06

Can't remember the last time I had 7 inches
