Boxing Day snow thread

From storm thread which talked about the complexities of tomorrow's weather:

"Merry Christmas will be really interesting to seem where gets snow tomorrow. Hilly parts of Wales, some of northern England, the midlands perhaps at times and I still think the chilterns. It depends on how heavy the precipitation is, the air it falls through and obviously the temperature. I expect some people will have rather a surprise."

And With regards to discussion about NI: "it's going to sound like a cop out but I just don't know 850hpa temps look borderline as does air temp but if the rain is heavy and falls through dry air as it evaporates it can cool the air down allowing snow to fall. ( evaporative cooling)
Often snow in the UK hangs on a knife edge with a temp swing of one or two degrees making all the difference. It makes it very difficult for councils. Put grit down too early and it gets washed away then it turns to snow and everyone blames the councils for the ensuing chaos."

I don't think things have changed since my thoughts earlier today.

Yes Flintshire really bad! Took us 40 mins to do a 10 min journey. Not a gritter in sight and cars can't get up hills. We had to go another way to get home.

Enlli · 26/12/2014 18:05

Badkitten can you tell when it will be safe to travel to Liverpool from Gwynedd?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 18:06

Cripes. Glad you got home safely!

Not tonight Enlli! I'd wait until later on tomorrow morning when hopefully the gritters will have been out. Check traffic England and local radio stations.

Raining now so I'm glad we got out in it, kids haven't seen much snow.

Badvocinapeartree · 26/12/2014 18:08

It's 2 degrees

18yearstooold · 26/12/2014 18:08

Just driven m62 Leeds to Manchester and it's snowing over the tops but not at each end

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 18:09

LeftyLoony · 26/12/2014 18:10

OYBBK Horsham is too far south isn't it?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 18:10

Is it settling up there yet 18years?

OP posts:
GaryBaldy · 26/12/2014 18:11

Snowing in Northants. Didn't expect it to settle as it has been raining much of today but there is a thin covering on the cars.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 18:11

Probably Lefty, too far SW, but,it's possible you may see some. I'm further west than you and I'm holding out a small hope.

Everything crossed then...

Badvocinapeartree · 26/12/2014 18:19

They were...smaller now.
The biggest were 2 inches in diameter I swear!

Enlli · 26/12/2014 18:23

Thank you BadKitten. Is there more snow forcast or is it meant to stop tomorrow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 18:25

No major features Ennli, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised if some snow streamers set up in the west funnelling down the estuaries. They are often very short notice affairs. A very cold few days though and I'm a bit concerned about ice for people.

This is my view. My sky isn't working because of it!

Ok thank you for the helpful information :) BadKitten.

Xmas Grin Threepiecesuite. DD is Elsa here in Egypt and has refused to believe Christmas has happened at all because it isn't snowing. She is convinced that it is someone's birthday and I just won't tell her whose. Hmm

In the hills above Aberystwyth it has just been very heavy rain apparently. Aunt has arrived so snow is now welcome. Smile

18yearstooold · 26/12/2014 18:32

It wasn't settling when I drove through

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 18:34

You are very welcome Enlii :) Beautiful FallenAngel! Sky is a bit vulnerable to weather though isn't it.

Altered, that's really funny. Your poor dd!
