Boxing Day snow thread

From storm thread which talked about the complexities of tomorrow's weather:

"Merry Christmas will be really interesting to seem where gets snow tomorrow. Hilly parts of Wales, some of northern England, the midlands perhaps at times and I still think the chilterns. It depends on how heavy the precipitation is, the air it falls through and obviously the temperature. I expect some people will have rather a surprise."

And With regards to discussion about NI: "it's going to sound like a cop out but I just don't know 850hpa temps look borderline as does air temp but if the rain is heavy and falls through dry air as it evaporates it can cool the air down allowing snow to fall. ( evaporative cooling)
Often snow in the UK hangs on a knife edge with a temp swing of one or two degrees making all the difference. It makes it very difficult for councils. Put grit down too early and it gets washed away then it turns to snow and everyone blames the councils for the ensuing chaos."

I don't think things have changed since my thoughts earlier today.

Ooo, there's a whole load of yellow bellies on this thread Grin

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 26/12/2014 21:12

OYBBK you said the system is moving through quicker than thought. Does that mean it is likely that if the snow seems to have passed on that it should be about it for the system, or that it is possible there is still more to come?

ihatethecold · 26/12/2014 21:13

Heavy rain in south Cambs.
I want snow. Angry

18yearstooold · 26/12/2014 21:15

Well my prediction that it wouldn't settle in Leeds was wrong

GoingGoingGoth · 26/12/2014 21:16

Snow settling in West Yorks. Considering waking the kids in case it's gone in the morning!

LeftyLoony · 26/12/2014 21:37

Oh no, it's moved up on the met office map Sad
Move down!!!

Thesimplethings · 26/12/2014 21:57

Northumberland is clear, very cold and misty. No signs if snow abs we usually get it first.

What the snow forecast for us?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 22:12

updated warnings remove Kent from the warnings area. Really don't understand why there aren't ice warnings out for central areas.

Heavy rain here (East Sussex coast) & temp has gone up from +4C to +10C.

No snow - I am happy!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 22:17

It's a hell of a warm core that's going through Shock temps will plummet again.

Still snowing it north Notts. It's already filled in the kids' footprints from their snowball fight in a dark garden, which wrapped up an hour ago. It's going to take us forever to get home tomorrow. Sad

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 26/12/2014 22:20

We had heavy snow all the way from Cambridge services to Melton Mowbray tonight, not a pleasant drive but glad it's out of the way!

Hope everyone gets what they are hoping for Grin

issynoho · 26/12/2014 22:24

4 inches and still snowing in Sheffield. Unofficial reports of a lot of stuck cars all over the city. It is very wet snow so if it freezes it will be v v icy.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 22:26

Iam rather Envy not surprised at the stuck cars! it will have taken a lot of people by surprise.

Isle of Wight here - I would love snow but bet it doesn't happen. It's been so mild here, my Rosemary is still flowering and my bulbs have already come through.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 26/12/2014 22:29

It's all a bit mad isn't it!

PotteringAlong · 26/12/2014 22:29

Snowing again heavily here in south Staffordshire.

TheWoollybacksWife · 26/12/2014 22:36

All our snow gone now Sad Just sleet now - any chance of more snow tomorrow?

I'm still watching the streetlight though. It appears to have a halo around it - I think my precipitation watch may have been knobbled by my low housekeeping standards Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 22:47

Unlikely woollyback I'm afraid, but I do have some hope for January.
