Boxing Day snow thread

From storm thread which talked about the complexities of tomorrow's weather:

"Merry Christmas will be really interesting to seem where gets snow tomorrow. Hilly parts of Wales, some of northern England, the midlands perhaps at times and I still think the chilterns. It depends on how heavy the precipitation is, the air it falls through and obviously the temperature. I expect some people will have rather a surprise."

And With regards to discussion about NI: "it's going to sound like a cop out but I just don't know 850hpa temps look borderline as does air temp but if the rain is heavy and falls through dry air as it evaporates it can cool the air down allowing snow to fall. ( evaporative cooling)
Often snow in the UK hangs on a knife edge with a temp swing of one or two degrees making all the difference. It makes it very difficult for councils. Put grit down too early and it gets washed away then it turns to snow and everyone blames the councils for the ensuing chaos."

I don't think things have changed since my thoughts earlier today.

Currently -24 and lots of snow!

IKYTWTLYA · 25/12/2014 21:33

Lamppost watch?

BrightestAndBest · 25/12/2014 21:52

I'd love some snow. We're in Bedfordshire, so probably too far South and/or East

MirandaWest · 25/12/2014 22:17

Going from York to Cambridgeshire tomorrow - am hoping no snow

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/12/2014 22:41

Central midlands was a deliberately vague term as there is a huge amount of uncertainty for reasons given in my op. I think there will be some rather disappointed people tomorrow and others somewhat surprised. I think the best travel advice I can give is to keep an open mind.

Lamppost watch means carefully examining the precipitation around the light of a streetlight to see if there are any flakes of snow.

I do that a lot OYBBK. Blush

SweetPeaPods · 25/12/2014 22:46

We're driving from East Midlands to the north east on sat, not looking forward to the drive if weather rubbish.

TheWoollybacksWife · 25/12/2014 22:46

DH refuses to believe that it will snow here (Northants) despite me saying that we are under a Met Office yellow warning so I'm hoping that it does I'm a perverse bugger

I have a full fridge my zombie apocalypse stores some dry goods and plenty of booze. Bring on the snow Grin

SwedeDreams · 25/12/2014 22:48

Oh, London is not marked for snow but I can't help hoping!

somebodythatiusedtoknow · 25/12/2014 22:48

I do that too with the lampposts. Also got a special garden light outside that we call the snow light as the only time we ever turn it on is to see if it's snowing and how heavy etc. after dark. Am obsessed! Sadly too far south to get any it seems tomorrow.

TheWoollybacksWife · 25/12/2014 22:52

We also have a lamppost at the end of the drive that we use to check for snow and rain.

Gloria the weather station at Pitsford School is pretty good for local forecasts but it will only come back online tomorrow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/12/2014 22:53

The thing with these warnings is that they aren't warning simply of snow but of disruptive snow, so even away from the warning areas you may see some. And if you are in a warning area you aren't guaranteed snow. It's quite rare to be this uncertain of the outcomes of a weather forecast this close to the time.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 25/12/2014 23:20

It wouldn't be the same if it was predictable!

Xmas Grin
MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 25/12/2014 23:38

The dd's saw the report on the news that there might be snow tomorrow and instantly got excited.

Please let there be some snow!

CaulkheadUpNorth · 25/12/2014 23:52

I've just seen a met office yellow warning whatever that means for snow in Birmingham tomorrow at 11am.

amigababy · 26/12/2014 00:00

ooh driving from Pennines to North Yorkshire, then Wetherby races then home. Unless the races get cancelled................

IKYTWTLYA · 26/12/2014 00:26

"Lamppost watch means carefully examining the precipitation around the light of a streetlight to see if there are any flakes of snow."

Ooooh, of course!

And yellow snow warning!

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 26/12/2014 00:51

Oh bloody hell, I do hope the snow stays away. I am traversing the Peaks 4 times in 2 days. I could really do without the complication of snow. These trips are not optional and having already been stuck in snow this month/season. I could really do without it. Xmas Sad

WhispersOfWickedness · 26/12/2014 07:42

I thought I was the only one who watched for snow in streetlights BlushGrin

SpottyTeacakes · 26/12/2014 07:49

We don't have any street lights Sad

GloriaSmud · 26/12/2014 08:13

Whispers ~ it's the thing to do when snow is forecast Xmas Grin
Oh Spotty Sad

'Tis cold here this morning (Leicester) 0.6C. Rain/snow is forecast to start about 4pm.

MooseyMoo · 26/12/2014 08:38

I too thought I was the only one who gazed at streetlights at night in the hope of seeing snowflakes!

Hard frost here (West Oxford)

LumpySpacedPrincess · 26/12/2014 08:38

They turn our streetlights off now, bastards. Xmas Grin

Dd has decided it is going to snow, she is taking the uncertainty as a positive thing.

Rosa · 26/12/2014 08:49

Raining in the west Country.
