Boxing Day snow thread

From storm thread which talked about the complexities of tomorrow's weather:

"Merry Christmas will be really interesting to seem where gets snow tomorrow. Hilly parts of Wales, some of northern England, the midlands perhaps at times and I still think the chilterns. It depends on how heavy the precipitation is, the air it falls through and obviously the temperature. I expect some people will have rather a surprise."

And With regards to discussion about NI: "it's going to sound like a cop out but I just don't know 850hpa temps look borderline as does air temp but if the rain is heavy and falls through dry air as it evaporates it can cool the air down allowing snow to fall. ( evaporative cooling)
Often snow in the UK hangs on a knife edge with a temp swing of one or two degrees making all the difference. It makes it very difficult for councils. Put grit down too early and it gets washed away then it turns to snow and everyone blames the councils for the ensuing chaos."

I don't think things have changed since my thoughts earlier today.

We had a real sleety rain shower about 9pm, the temperature went up to 1.1C, then it stopped for a bit and now it's snowing again and temperature's back to 0.8 again (Leicester) Unlike most wintry nights, I haven't heard any gritters go by so they might not be bothering as it would all probably get washed away. Roads and pavements will be like an ice rink in the morning.

No snow down here unfortunately. Slightly bemused by the lack of a weather warning for strong winds though. Very, very windy out there.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 27/12/2014 00:38

Very windy here too in Suffolk. Something just went scraping and banging down the side of the house. Still raining too.

atticusclaw · 27/12/2014 01:16

We have six inches here in Nottinghamshire and it's still coming down. We have unexpected house guests tonight since they can't get out of our driver way (BMW rear wheel drive). Dh took home his elderly uncle in the landrover and ended up towing four vehicles that were stuck. He said he's never seen so many trees down and there was some weird electrical phenomenon too with flickering lights and blue light in the sky.

Our lights have been flickering since about eight so I'm expecting the power to go.

Theredandthewhite · 27/12/2014 03:47

Crazy wind outside (N Essex). Did not see that coming at all!

JillJ72 · 27/12/2014 06:05

Wind was OYBBK's original concern, with high tides.... Just looked on metoffice and warnings now show ice, and wind - www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1419638400

We had some sleet which promptly turned back to rain. The wind is blowing down the wood burner flue. Temps for next 5 days are low, with not much sun, so I may be disconnecting the boiler condensing pipe so it doesn't freeze and make a stupendous racket in the early hours of any morning - it's quite scary!

GloriaSmud · 27/12/2014 06:49

Atticus ~ there are some posters here that also saw blue/green lights in the sky. Possibly downed power lines?

BBC report here on the disruption caused by the snow. We've got about a cm on the cars, slight covering on grass and it's 1.4C.

SpottyTeacakes · 27/12/2014 06:57

High winds here in West Sussex. We had a power cut last night (obviously, where we live we just have to blow outside and the power goes off Hmm).

WhispersOfWickedness · 27/12/2014 07:23

Oi, where's my snow gone?! Went to bed when there was a nice covering and it was still snowing, and have woken up to nothing Angry

magimedi · 27/12/2014 07:39

No snow here (Sussexcoast) but very, very windy. I was woken about an hour ago by a great noise of glass breaking somewhere down the road. Can't see what it was as is still dark but suspect it was some of the large outside lights on neighbour's house.

Gr33dyeggs · 27/12/2014 08:50

We had a couple of cms of snow in the north west Smile It came down heavily after 7 pm last night - managed an hours fun snowballing and snowman building.

Snow still here this morning but looks like an ice rink on the untreated roads.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/12/2014 09:18

latest warnings

Very late with the wind and ice warnings met office. Tut tut. Ice was obvious and actually so was the wind as the low leaves the country.

The Daily Fail seem to think it will be -10 this week. Shock

nannynick · 27/12/2014 09:19

No snow until about 8am when it started. Though easing off now.

And all we had was rain. No wind, no snow, no ice. Just very normal rain.
Quite glad about the ice though. It's the one bit of weather I do not like. A whole load of danger with no excitement or interest. (Though ice storms are fascinating in a deadly sort of way)

Daily mail could be correct if they are referring to the central highlands in Scotland.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 27/12/2014 09:42

The DM being correct? Dammit!

Worcestershire weather a bit boring this morning. Not much of anything and blue sky.

WhispersOfWickedness · 27/12/2014 10:27

We didn't even have a frost this morning, let alone ice Confused

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 27/12/2014 10:36

Any truths to the prediction of snow over yorkshire/lancashire later? Or are we just looking at ice?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/12/2014 10:58

Bitchy, you may see some snow showers, so might Lincolnshire and the west Midlands.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 27/12/2014 11:20

Oh shit. Right off to pack snow chains and extra snacks. Thanks OYBBK

ChristmasDawndonnaagain · 27/12/2014 11:24

We had high winds, torrential rain and localised flooding on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. It's dry now but more rain predicted later.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/12/2014 11:30

I think the wind caught them by surprise. I don't think we ended up with a warning for it at all in the SW.

JKSLtd · 27/12/2014 11:53

Whispers - us too in essex. Not a hint of a flake. Boo.

Newbiecrafter · 27/12/2014 12:11

Hello everyone.

We had loads of rain and wind here. No snow at all. :(

Lovely cold bright day today, but still a bit windy.

Keeping fingers crossed for some snow before this winter is out.
Xxx
