Boxing Day snow thread

From storm thread which talked about the complexities of tomorrow's weather:

"Merry Christmas will be really interesting to seem where gets snow tomorrow. Hilly parts of Wales, some of northern England, the midlands perhaps at times and I still think the chilterns. It depends on how heavy the precipitation is, the air it falls through and obviously the temperature. I expect some people will have rather a surprise."

And With regards to discussion about NI: "it's going to sound like a cop out but I just don't know 850hpa temps look borderline as does air temp but if the rain is heavy and falls through dry air as it evaporates it can cool the air down allowing snow to fall. ( evaporative cooling)
Often snow in the UK hangs on a knife edge with a temp swing of one or two degrees making all the difference. It makes it very difficult for councils. Put grit down too early and it gets washed away then it turns to snow and everyone blames the councils for the ensuing chaos."

I don't think things have changed since my thoughts earlier today.

I am a bit North of you, Night Smile
I'm still unimpressed by the lack of snow from last year, we need some this year! It is normally us who has it when the rest of the country doesn't!

Doje · 26/12/2014 19:49

In Derbyshire at the moment, and it's causing chaos here!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 26/12/2014 19:51

Any chance of snow near Edinburgh? We're quite high up, if that helps (above 200m).

mankyscotslass · 26/12/2014 19:52

Heavy sleet here. Very wet and cold. Car windscreens have a build up of slush on them, but everywhere else is just wet!

Snow has turned to rain in the Corby area. DP has to drive the loooong drive from here to Ayrshire (west coast Scotland) tomorrow and back down on Sunday to fetch his DCs from their mum. Hope the roads improve further north by then! Blush

thenightsky · 26/12/2014 20:37

I must be in some sort of micro-climate patch of Lincolnshire where its drizzling with rain and doesn't actually that cold even.

Follyfoot · 26/12/2014 20:41

Snow ploughs out here (Derbyshire Dales). Very difficult journey home, 3 hours to get not very far at all and lots of abandoned cars.
