Best man doesn't exactly have a legal definition.... He could be right and wrong

00100001 · 07/01/2023 20:28

Also it was widely reported at the time??

I'm confused; that article called it Harry's best man speech?

00100001 · 07/01/2023 20:32

Surely any of the 300 guests can confirm what happened?

That's what I mean, it was reported he didn't speech, even part sof the speech.but now we're supposed to believe it was all a lie? And that 300 people were complicit in covering up the fact this speech never happened???

00100001 · 07/01/2023 20:33

He did a speech*

Bananarama21 · 07/01/2023 20:34

Does it matter harry supported certain elements of the role and so did his closest friends.

spanieleyes · 07/01/2023 20:35

I THINK that Harry did the best man speech at the evening reception rather than the wedding breakfast, perhaps he thinks that means he wasn't a " proper" best man!

That's fair, except that according to the article the book says that Harry says that William didn't want him to be the best man because he didn't want him to give the best man speech. But then the article from the time quotes excerpts from Harry's best man speech.

He stood with William in the church (looking pretty ropey) but apparently wasn’t the best man????

BradfordGirl · 07/01/2023 20:37

"According to reports by MailOnline and The Mirror, Harry claimed he was made to “act out” the role at the royal wedding to spare scrutiny into the lives of his brother’s two closest friends James Meade and Thomas Van Straubenzee.
Harry was officially considered the best man, and travelled to Westminster Abbey with his brother and then Prince Charles in a Bentley.
“Willy didn’t want me giving a best man’s speech,” the duke reportedly wrote in his book, adding that it was actually Meade and Straubenzee who gave the traditional speech at William’s wedding reception."

There's an awful lot of people who will be able to confirm if he gave a speech or not - but it was pretty widely reported at the time.

But even if he didn't, he still stood up beside him at the church and handled the ring, then signed the register. So I'm not sure how it was a "lie" that he was the best man.

BradfordGirl · 07/01/2023 20:39

No one is denying he gave a speech. Various people gave speeches.

spanieleyes · 07/01/2023 20:41

@LittleBearPad

I know, I'm confused too! Quite how you can act as best man and carry out the duties of a best man but not be best man is a puzzle!

toomuchlaundry · 07/01/2023 20:41

So what is the definition of a best man @BradfordGirl? Surely accompanying PW in the church and handing out the rings is part of best man's duty. And in this wedding this was one of the most prominent roles as seen my millions, whereas reception was guests only. You can have more than one best man

No one is denying he gave a speech. Various people gave speeches.

That's semantics though isn't it? If William didn't want him to be the best man because he didn't want him to give the best man speech then presumably Harry couldn't be trusted to give any other kind of speech either. And the article that was published at the time specifically posted excerpts of Harry's best man speech. He stood up with William, he handled the rings, he signed the register, and he gave a speech: it sounds like he was the best man as far as any rational person understands the role.

So he gave a speech and stood at the front of the abbey with William.

Is there some special part of being a best man he feels was missing?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/01/2023 20:42

Literally evidence to the contrary on TV screens around the world. He is not a well man.

According to the sun's version...
"Instead, Harry says he was forced to act as a compere to introduce William's friends James Meade and Thomas Van Straubenzee, who actually gave the speech.
The Royal made the fresh claims in his bombshell memoir Spare, which has sent shockwaves across the world.
Harry wrote: "Willy didn’t want me giving a best man’s speech.""

Others seem to be saying the same

BradfordGirl · 07/01/2023 20:43

Best man has no legal definition. It sounds like William made up his own definition of who was best man and who wasn't.

That does not matter. But it shows just how much they lie to the public, the whole family.

It’s sounds more like Harry is spouting absolute shite

toomuchlaundry · 07/01/2023 20:46

So where is PW lying? Harry stood by him as he got married and handed out the rings, that is being a best man

SomethingLessIdentifiable · 07/01/2023 20:46

He accompanied William to the church.
He stood next to him at the alter.
He handed the ring over.
He signed and witnessed the signing of the register.
He gave a widely reported speech at the celebration meal/party.

I'm not sure what he means when he says he wasn't the best man.

steff13 · 07/01/2023 20:48

Maybe William wouldn't let him plan the bachelor party. Which would be a shame because that seems like a part that Harry would have really excelled at.

HaroldsFrostbittenWilly · 07/01/2023 20:49

I'm not sure what he means when he says he wasn't the best man

But it seems to be Harry's truth that he wasn't

Or did he just want to be known by some other archaic term for a groom's supporter?
