And some gratuitous pics of the slight men of New York, or aka successful raiders of their elder female relatives closets.

Well Flo I didn’t ask what you’ve been altering/ finishing off, nor what’s the M&M linen like - and I really would like to know. And I’m a sucker for raising a smile so am delighted you appreciated my dog’s canine charms.
Talking about the 60s being brutal my mother was stuck on the edge of a moor in the north of England in the sixties with millions of children and my father who was 20 years older than her. So she felt she couldn’t do the dolly bird thing as the optics weren’t right (sorry, I’ve heard this phrase so much recently I can no longer remember what is the non-slang way of saying this!). So it was Bally Suisse and Jaeger and Cresta of London all bought terrifically carefully in the sales. I didn’t really know about Biba, Kensington Market et al until the 70s when I started reading Vogue (precocious, moi?)

mm47 · 24/09/2022 09:42

Cross post bo thank you (will reply when have read it) 🙏😘

Voltefarce · 24/09/2022 10:33

Successful charity shop trip this morning - Aquascutum silk dress (£9.99!!), jigsaw tweed-ish skirt, mens blue and white stripe shirt.

mm47 · 24/09/2022 11:08

Taking those photos/ messages in reverse:

bo those lady-boys are perfection ( I know the term means something else but if it didn’t mean what it does mean - IYSWIM- it would perfectly describe these two slight young men).

Agree about Picasso, but Francois Gillot (?) is so striking and her hat and dress are gorgeous (I would definitely wear something like that) - and also particularly love Jackie’s outfit and the image of the woman with the flower and the hat.

Debbie Harry, Loulou de La Falaise (I don’t recognise the third image) look amazing so I will get practicing tying headscarves like that although the results might not travel beyond my bedroom mirror.

Can aim for 70s safari plus kaftans and scarves.

You are right, my dog was unimpressed at being trussed up in a scarf - the look is saying “you’re such a bloody hypocrite you say you deplore people dressing up pets and then you do this to moi!” She is more used to being swathed in towels after doing a bunk in the rain…

For the Iranian women yes I imagine the headscarf is more a symbol of religious oppression than the passport to relative freedom of movement I thought it was originally supposed to be.

Red I’d love to hear more about gaucho style - if you wanted to pinch your grandfather’s horsey scarves it sounds an interesting way to twist the regal horsey look. (Stream of consciousness: Argentina - gauchos- polo players - Royal family … etc)

mm47 · 24/09/2022 11:09

Volte photos please! Sounds amazing. Heading out for a quick trawl…

banivani · 24/09/2022 11:52

Bonjour mes amies, I'm tentatively ready to start posting more actively. Have sort of been following along lurkingly, but all I can remember to say is [narcissism] that I told you Flo that wide-legged non-cropped trousers are the way to go!!! [/narcissism]

Floisme · 24/09/2022 16:40

Lovely to see you back bani, and yes you were right and I was wrong about full length wide leg trousers. I should have listened.

I remember Debbie Harry wearing that dress on Top of the Pops - Heart of Glass I think it was. She was holding the scarf bit over her head and dancing with it. Beautiful woman.

Yeah point taken about headscarves. Not the right time.

banivani · 24/09/2022 20:01

With a wave of magnanimity I accept your obsequiousness.

I’m really liking these new big photos btw.

botemp · 24/09/2022 20:54

Bani, you're back! Hope this means things have improved with your DS. (I am genuinely Snoopy dance level of excited to see you back again but really I'm just testing how these massive pictures work when it's an animated gif).

Mm, I feel your dog is absolutely entitled to slam a door and blast 'I hate you so much right now' by Kelis for the sheer indignity of it all Wink

François Gillot definitely has that sort of inexplicable magnetism, and she's still got it at the age of a 100 (101 in November). Women in hat with rose is Diana Vreeland although she's not all that identifiable on it (I suspect someone has photoshopped it Hmm). Third unknown in a head scarf is, I think, an actress playing Loulou dlF in the YSL movie (it was a bit meh, although I think there were two, I think one was more meh than the other but both were meh).

I dunno Flo, it wouldn't be the first time Western fashion capitals look the other way while padding their quarterly figures and churn out 'modest fashion'.

I've been in a bit of a buying funk, stupid Russian psyops have me anticipating just walking around like an ice popsicle wearing the same old jumpers on repewt for the next few months and I'm dreading it even though I know it's not rational. I did see a nice Vivienne Westwood coat today at the consignment shop but it felt pricey (Anglomania is the cheaper line, isn't it, I'll have a Google in a bit) and it was super toasty but it had that construction where the bottom half sort of fans out which is a bit odd temperature wise and how it makes the fanny area prominent. I liked it but wasn't wholly convinced (also, grey and it needed a repair). Also saw a new Balenciaga coat but even at 70% off it was still hardly a bargain at just under €750.

“With a wave of magnanimity I accept your obsequiousness”
bani glad to see you’ve pulled through the summer and that you are back on the thread and on top form.

bo luckily my dog forgives and forgets pretty instantly so long as I offer edible reparations. Wow Francois Gillot is still stunning: apart from her features it’s the lively intelligence of her regard that seems so engaging. Whatever Putin is planning for our future is pretty nerve wracking so your paralysis and my shopping are surely two sides of the same coin (I’m stopping now before the Daily Wail offer me a column writing psychobabble). Except to add that those sorts of prices are pretty paralysing for not quite right stuff even at the best of times!

botemp · 25/09/2022 08:19

Stupid MN not allowing animated GIFs, way too alienate young people.

Mm, I'm not overly concerned with Putin and his sabre rattling. He spent over a billion on his summer home, he's clearly an inefficient micromanager doomed for failure in the long run. Don't get me wrong, I worry greatly what that means for Ukraine (and to a far lesser extent the Russians themselves) but personally I feel no less or more safe than this time last year (physically and financially). It's the constant what temperature setting will you have on this winter conversations that's grinding me down. Plus all the tips to cook your food as quickly (and tastelessly) as possible in a microwave. It's all so dreary and yes I'm aware I sound like an absolute privileged twat as that's what many peoples' lives are like that without all this going on and it's extra tough for them now but it's just the general doom and gloom brigade living their best lives. The Dutch love a bit of competitive frugality and efficiency and the fuckers are especially emboldened right now...

Glad to have gotten that off my chest, since cranking the heat up would be an immoral form of rebellion perhaps I should go with reckless spending for a bit instead 💡

Ah forgot, randomly popped up on my Vinted feed (they're selling the skirt by Zara), horsey head scarf Parisienne. I can see why it didn't catch on with the masses but it did get me thinking about sunglasses, maybe a shape switch up will be the thing for your Menorca trip, mm I always forget what a difference a new silhouette in those can suddenly make.

The endless doom and gloom is indeed very depressing. I’m not sure what it’s like with you bo but in London we seem to be having a lot of sunshine and it’s still fairly warm - long may this continue as this is my number one morale booster (it even beats shopping!).

i like the entire headscarf and tweed outfit but what I really admire most of all is her excellent posture. Will definitely head out and see if I can find some Menorca worthy droopy-sort-of-aviator (technical term) 🕶.

botemp · 25/09/2022 12:35

It's unseasonably warm but it's been proper gloomy for days, the rain has been insane (but at least it's remedied the draught we were having). I think today's the first day I've been able to go about my day without having to check the weather radar obsessively.

I desperately want some Janice Joplin style round sunglasses myself but I've only found some I like at Chanel and they weren't far off the Balenciaga jacket in price Hmm Hope you find some exciting ones, Loewe have had some absolutely joyous ones as part of the Paula's Ibiza line/Collab (I never know what exactly it is, for the longest time I assumed it was a fictional night club 🤷).

So much for my reckless spending vow, I found a Studio Nicholson jumpsuit on Vinted last night for €10 🤷 it's sort of an ikat number probably out of season by now but maybe I can get away with wearing it with a wool roll neck layering top underneath (seller mentioned cotton is thick). That whole layering a summer piece rarely works out for me so perhaps I'll just have to recklessly go somewhere warm instead...

Bani! Welcome back

crikey bo, all I can say is that Vinted is a LOT more styled in Europe than here in the UK. Here it’s mostly slightly blurry pics of hanging or laid-flat garments, occasionally more than 3 pics and if you are really lucky, a label with fabric composition and some measurements

Did the wardrobe switch over the weekend and realised I probably have a sweater addiction. Have imposed a moratorium on new / new to me items and am building up a Christmas wish list instead - that way I can hope to get something I actually want instead of the usual well meaning but dreadful tat
< ducks and runs for cover after mentioning the C-word in September >

botemp · 26/09/2022 09:49

There's a lot of French influencers on Vinted but often normal people use those images too (it's against t&c but no one checks that) so I never really know which one is which 🤷 but there is definitely a culture of seeing highly styled images on Vinted here, especially for brands that appeal to young people. If it's just laid out flat there will be endless messages (this was back when all messages on the app were public) of requests for a picture where it's being worn.

It's a bit odd because I remember getting into Vestiaire when it was first launched because they made it look very professional and not secondhand at all, that was the whole appeal but the younger generations don't care and just want to know how it will look in photos, kind of good thing that the stigma of secondhand has lessened significantly but on the other hand kind of depressing that all they care about is how it photographs...

(The Studio Nicholson jumpsuit images are ones I found online, it was that bargainous and not snapped up yet because it was wrongly listed by size and because it was just photographed on a hanger).

Oh also, somehow Zara having a Collab with Studio Nicholson passed me by. I had seen it on their home section but it looked to be overpriced blankets and some random stuff but I recently discovered a whole selection of men's wear on their normal site. No women's, (probably why I wasn't alerted) but a lot of the men's things look very wearable, I need to go have a nose in the shop.

Thank you all for your kind words ❤Things are still at bit shaky at casa Bani, at least emotionally, but we're ok I hope.

See, headscarves are really practical, aren't they? In this over-coiffed age they're due a renaissance really (keeps your hair in place). Though atm I'm inclined to think we should all shave our heads in pure protest of course. Zan, zendegi, azadi!

Popped on the zara.se website to look at that collab, but don't see it there (30 seconds of that website makes me lose the will to live though). However I clicked around to see a soap described as having a cozy, woody scent "with a gourmand aspect". Grin

I like that style jumpsuit, looks so comfortable. I like a bit of ikat myself but can't afford the real deal obviously, only "ikat" but it has to be nicely done.

Today I returned a pair of trousers I got from H&M because they were straining a bit at the pockets and not only because of a poor cut but also because I've been gaining a lot of weight. Sigh.

botemp · 27/09/2022 09:52

Soap you want to eat isn't a good thing, copywriters at Zara 🧐

Yeah, their website is an exercise of frustration, it's hidden away under the man section which you have to click on first. Here's a direct link but the whole region thing sometimes messes it up but usually it gets there if you just click through the region question.

I'm too much of a chicken shit to cut or let alone shave my hair. There was coverage of a local solidarity protest here (we have a large Iranian community) where the women were cutting their hair that had me crying at the sight, I'm not sure why. I'm probably way too attached to my hair (the whole suffering with hair loss probably doesn't help). The women of Dagestan have also risen in my admiration these past few days, let's hope it leads to change.

Welcome back bani. Fingers crossed lifee chez vous maintains an even keel.

My keyboard has developed an irritating propensity to double letters and spaces at random, so forgive any typos. And if anyone has a hack that resets, do please tell!

banivani · 27/09/2022 14:12

Thank you Xing, and same. <3

Bo, you can burn a Hermès headscarf instead Grin

botemp · 27/09/2022 18:16

Sorry to hear your keyboard is acting up Xing, is this on an Android phone? It's a known bug for like a decade already, but fairly randomly shows up. Workarounds are await an update where it magically fixes itself, restart the keyboard app by force stopping it in the apps menu under settings or install a new keyboard from the Playstore and make that your new default keyboard.

Don't tempt me Bani, I hail from a family of pyromaniacs and Hermès scarves are really not my cup of tea, I'd enjoy that way too much 😈🔥
