I've been seeing a lot of these type of trousers (I call them Sarouel but not sure if that's English) but with added interest like cargo pockets or in less droopy fabrics. I kind of like the idea of doing some tapered sort of trousers because ultimately the wide legs have been around long enough so we'll revert back and I better start getting used to it.

Carrier clothing do these which I've been looking at for over a year now. But the sizing guide looks a bit complicated and I haven't found the energy yet to do any more than click in and out.

botemp · 20/02/2023 18:17

I feel a bit of a failure as a Dutch person for never having tramped around in salt marshes in funky trousers... There does seem to be this thing about yelling at random people on the streets if it's high tide in Scheveningen or something if anyone ever rolls up their trousers or has noticeable bare ankleage real estate on display. Much hilarity, not <ahem>

Those look good though but I'd assume I'd be too short for them and taking them in would be a challenge and a half. And, yeah, the sizing guide just leaves me more confused than I thought possible.

I like those trousers Flo.

Floisme · 20/02/2023 18:25

Ha I hadn't even noticed the 'Dutch' Grin No salt marshes round here either and yup, they'd probably be way too long with no obvious way to shorten them. And yet they keep drawing me back...

Floisme · 20/02/2023 18:37

I'm also drawn to this Cos denim skirt and it's the first time for several years that I've even given a skirt a second glance. So that's telling me something. I've got a denim skirt already from years ago - not jeans style but longish, A lIne with a deep pleat at the back so maybe I can do something with that. Or maybe it's time to shake out that nanny-on-acid Rundholz skirt that I've worn shamefully little.

botemp · 20/02/2023 18:56

I like the materiality of the denim skirt but it feels like a lot of heavy fabric, might give the sensation of trampling through salt marshes Grin

Yes, yes, time to bring out the nanny on acid skirt, give the locals at the coffee shop something to talk about.

Is it just me or it does it feel like spring already, not so much in temperature but it definitely doesn't feel like winter and like nature is about to burst out in bloom. I will probably regret saying that soon enough...

I think we need to see the nanny-on-acid Rundholz skirt...

I've seen that COS denim skirt in real life and thought the material looked a bit cheap.

I've always loved full skirts - I used to have so little shape, they were brilliant for giving me the appearance of some. Plus I love swishing.

BlueSummerBaby · 20/02/2023 22:32

It's not just you bo I kept having to remind myself it's still February these past few weeks. I agree it's not really temperature related, although the sun has been out a lot lately so perhaps it's that. Or maybe a subconscious feeling of hopefulness, 🤔 IDK why though

Floisme · 20/02/2023 22:40

It's not that I'm thinking of buying that Cos skirt so much as the fact that I noticed it in the first place. Skirts just haven't been on my radar for the last few years. It's a sign....

The nanny on acid skirt was one that bo sketched on the basis of that name alone and was spookily close to nailing it. Can't remember which thread.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 21/02/2023 08:20

Aha, thanks.

I've been wearing skirts more recently too, and buying new ones. Trousers are comfortable and all, but skirts give so many more options.

Today I'm wear some Wolford tights, which are lovely and a good colour, and I know with a following wind will last really well, but they were £35... if I'm a bit rough on them they will ladder. And I'm not exactly lady-like, so rough treatment is likely.

Has anyone come across any that are in the gap between M&S cheapies that ladder as soon as you look at them and Wolford?

Floisme · 21/02/2023 08:23

I'll see if I've still got the pic MmePoppy - or take another!

And yes please to any tights talk, although I can't answer your question I'm afraid. I've never particularly liked wearing them so it's probably the main thing putting me off.

botemp · 21/02/2023 08:38

I'd completely forgotten about the nanny on acid sketch, kind of want to see it now, although, knowing my own drawing skills I probably don't 😑

What denier are you looking at Poppy, I only really feel it's worth paying out for over 50/60ish, the thin transparant ones are going to ladder when you least expect them to no matter (so recycled ones feel more appropriate here but tbh I've just not worn any low denier ones in years instead 🤷). The only thing I've found to improve their longevity is while pulling them on and off is to wear cotton gloves, less snagging accidents then, it's just random stuff in the wild that'll do it then.

I've also been wearing more skirts but it's down to having new knee length boots and a new skirt, kind of makes you look into a forgotten part of the wardrobe again as a result. I was looking at this skirt in the dregs of the sale with an extra 20% off, can't remember the designer (possibly The Row). Not a fan of the colour but it had my sewing brain going with how the material and shaping interacted, definitely feels like skirts are a bit more exciting than other bottoms at the moment.

Oh, yeah, and also sticking tights into the freezer after washing them to help keep them longer but tbh I'm iffy on the science of it and it's beginning to feel more and more like one of those rituals that no one really understands the meaning of but you do anyway just because...

OP posts:
Floisme · 21/02/2023 09:00

Yes I think maybe that's it - that skirts are where the interesting things are happening at the moment. I think for me it started with some of those Dior adverts in the autumn - the long full skirts plus those fitted jackets (bar) with a flying saucer for a peplum. 2023 does 1947.

botemp · 21/02/2023 09:04

<Awaiting Putin's speech with dread right now>

Feels a bit premature to be 1947 already, but one can hope, Flo.

Jumping in on the tights topic poppy, online brand Snag are always recommended here. I can vouch for the wool blend ones - I have them in black and burgundy, and have got a lot of use out of them.

They do all kinds of styles, in a range of sizes and colours, and are great for the price. Only thing to warn you is their advertising can be a bit OTT / marmite 🫣

MmePoppySeedDefage · 21/02/2023 11:55

Thanks for the tights advice. I am wearing Wolford 10 denier. They fit really well and are a good colour. I may try their 8 denier ones too.

I plan to note the number of times I wear them before they get wrecked, after Boots ones that I quite like only last one wear. Admittedly they are slightly finer denier.

I'll work out the Cost Per Wear for both options. And will also try the one suggested above.

Floisme · 21/02/2023 15:42

I dug out my version of the denim skirt to try. It's pretty good, less volume than the Cos one but that's probably no bad thing. Wearing with a fitted forties jacket - my version of Dior GrinOnly snag is it's fractionally shorter than I'd like. We're talking tiny margins but it ends at lower calf rather than top of the ankle. I'm wearing with knee boots though which help camouflage that somehow. It has a decent hem so I could let it down but that'll leave a crease so it would just give me another problem to solve, unless I decide I don't care about crease marks. Anyway I'll wear it a few more times as it is before I decide.

The tights feel weird though after all this time - M&S grey opaques from around 2017. Not enjoying them at all.

Redandblue11 · 21/02/2023 15:56

@MmePoppySeedDefage I have M&S, Wolford and Heist. M&S ones did not last very long at all for me and they were a considerable denier … very annoying.
Wolford and heist have lasted quite a long time -more than a couple of years but we had a psndemic in between so more than a year for sure - I don’t wear them that often anymore, I personally like the wide band of the heist ones and they are very comfortable. they are probably very similar price to wolford ones, so I know I am not helping but maybe just a few pounds cheaper. I found that the cost per wear of the expensive ones justifies the price for me, a shame as I had high hopes for the m&s ones.
