Thank you sophielion. After you mentioned I went online and agree the Arket coats look good.
I am thinking about autumn now. I know a lot of people prefer to dress in autumn, but I still prefer my clothes in s/s tbh. Not sure why … after all is approaching to half my life in the northern hemisphere…

botemp · 16/09/2022 10:42

Did you ever end up getting the Tajikistan coat from Vestiaire Red?

I'm not a major lover of autumn dressing either until I sort of pull it all out. I did really enjoy wearing heeled ankle boots for the first time in forever yesterday, it somehow switches up everything. It's like clockwork on here though, early August there's always a 'can we talk about autumn dressing yet' thread and I just can't be bothered until it's grey and raining 🤷

Ah interesting time, I did wonder if the financial reporting still had any relevance with the internet probably outpacing it. Do their journalists also get to act like normal workers and not spend most of their being combative on twitter, because if so, I might just bite the bullet and get the expensive subscription (but for those who won't, the 12ft.io website gets me past their pay wall).

OP posts:
mm47 · 17/09/2022 06:46

i don’t do Twitter but we have a subscription to the FT and the journalists are fantastic.

Floisme · 17/09/2022 08:20

I'm here! The Internet's been wonky so I could read but not post. What a weird week and what a strange nation Britain is, but I remain fond.

I followed the sex and gender arguments for at least a couple of years before I felt like I knew enough to post. But I don't bring it here so will spare you all my opinion of Mermaids.

Anyway autumn. Love an autumn thread but don't quite know what to make of how so many of my favourite clothes seem to be bang on fashion this season. Even tank tops are having a moment but let's not revisit that today. I should be pleased but instead feel kind of grumpy about it.

timeisnotaline · 17/09/2022 10:28

Well this may backfire but I have pleats on the brain after that article so when I saw this, given the sale … it will probably be very unflattering! And a couple of other fairly basic things. Saba always used to be classic workwear, although they feel a bit less classic these days. The dresses I had lasted for years and the merino cardigans also, they were a lovely fine knit. www.saba.com.au/clothing/sophie-micro-pleat-top_ws19962-ivory

botemp · 19/09/2022 10:13

That looks like a great top time but indeed a bit sus for being so marked down and all sizes still available. Hope it's a good one, in the end 🤞(although the name Saba is giving me some flashbacks to the world's most terrifying airport with the shortest landing/take off).

Well, I've swapped out some clothes and mournfully put away open toed shoes and I'm still decidedly meh about autumn wear and had a meltdown over a month somehow defying odds and having a nibble at one of my jumpers that I thought was safely tucked away in a vacuum sealed bag/box thingy, should be fixable but I am still caring way too much about it.

I did see Mango have some new premium brand/selection (I think it's even called selection Confused), I like the jeans but kind of am avoid buying jeans new and really like a leather shirt in a deep brown but high street leather tends to be dodgy ethically/environmentally so I've gone off on a tangent contemplating if I could sew myself one (a very bad idea but intriguing nonetheless...)

@Redandblue11 , @ToEllewithIt , and anyone else interested, I've managed to badger a PR person into telling me the finalised dates of the Antwerp sample sales, they'll be on from 15-20 November. Time to (potentially) get planning 🗓️

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 22/09/2022 08:27

thank you Bo for getting those dates, unfortunately that week my DH is away so I need to stay out at home.
Another possibility for me would be the sales in Paris , are they in January?
A few very busy days here so I go now but I keep lurking.

mm47 · 22/09/2022 16:56

ooooh noooo I will be away so am hoping to live/shop vicariously through anyone who can attend the MHL sample sale next week…

What's up with MN, the pictures are huge all of a sudden Confused There's a by appointment only access to the MH sale on Wednesday, link here but I suspect it's already booked up by now (I haven't looked).

Red, I'm in Paris the second week of Jan. At least I think it's the second week, around the 11th anyhow which I've just discovered is the start of the sales there, I was mostly concerned with getting to the major Elsa Schiaparelli exhibit which ends soon thereafter (20th, I think).

OP posts:
mm47 · 22/09/2022 19:29

Gosh Bo how did you manage to get the email offering early access by appointment to MHL sample sale? I still can’t go but for future reference would love to know how to get this. The email I got just offered Thursday/Friday. 🧐

mm47 · 22/09/2022 21:13

Whoops just found the email (I thought it would come from the Music Room but the private invitation one is included in the notice from Margaret Howell).

sorry for the usual ⛈ in a 🍵.

missmoon · 23/09/2022 08:36

I also missed the e-mail, for some reason MHL keep bumping me off the mailing list! I’m tempted to go next week, although I’ve hardly worn the things I bought at the last sample sale..

Floisme · 23/09/2022 09:27

I hope some of you can get to the sample sales and report back. I loved the V&A write up and pics by the way.

Not much to report. I've not made anything for ages but been quite busy doing alterations, tidying up some of the things I made last year that were starting to annoy me. Sent for some Merchant and Mills linen, hoping it will inspire.

Some predictions that may not make the Fashion Week shows:
pearls, headscarves tied under the chin (ideally vintage Hermes), brooches, midi length kilts. You're welcome.

Redandblue11 · 23/09/2022 09:30

LOL Flo . Spot on trend predictions Lol

Voltefarce · 23/09/2022 13:21

Love the predictions! I’m planning on doing the big wardrobe changeover this evening. Hoping to do some eBay listing too.

mm47 · 23/09/2022 14:17

Thanks Flo for the prediction: I have all those pieces, what I really need is les Parisiennes’ spin on them so that I don’t pass as a doppelgänger of the Queen (may she rise in glory).🤡

botemp · 23/09/2022 14:38

Boo, there I go briefly believing I'm on some special VIP list at Margaret Howell (not Thatcher autocorrect Hmm).

The headscarves and abundance of pearls and other jewelry including brooches were a thing briefly the winter before the pandemic set in. It was an odd take on Upper East Side meets I want to say Brighton Beach (aka Little Moscow/Odessa in NYC), and a bit of 80s yuppie New York. It was mostly slight young men though, so it was doubly confusing as you were expecting a little old lady. Because of the pandemic it never really traveled far beyond New York. I spotted it in Paris but there it was young women and did have a bit of a French flavour, the Babushka scarf was swapped out for something a bit more Hermes like, and there was a bit of an equestrian thing going on. I think we're actually circling back to all things horsy again, vintage Gucci horse bit gold naff, etc. So for a Parisienne twist I'd say channel old money horse fanatic, oops, there I go bringing royalty back from the dead... Marie Antoinette really liked pretending to be a shepherdess, maybe go with that?

OP posts:
mm47 · 24/09/2022 05:44

bo that’s fascinating- I love your description of how this particular wave of horsey/sloanedom was started by slight young men in New York. And your encyclopaedic knowledge is exactly why I suspect you moonlight as a fashion editor (and get VIP access to Margaret Howell etc 😉 ).

Please could I have some inspiration for what to wear in Menorca? Or possibly even better a description of what is worn (so that I’m aware of what codes I’m breaking rather than being blissfully ignorant). I’m off for a 5 day wedding next week with all sorts of activities going on and have Googled till I’m blue in the face but still none the wiser (plus ca change…)

Ha ha love those pics mm47 I remember seeing a few knotted-under-the-chin headscarves in catwalk reports from.... not sure, last autumn? But they didn't take off, at least not round here.

I remember my mum wearing them (not Hermes!) when I was a child and how I thought she looked really glamorous in them and then suddenly they were over and wearing one was fashion death. Don't believe the hype about the first summer of love - the 60s could be brutal.

Floisme · 24/09/2022 08:18

Sorry mm47 I've not answered your question as I don't know Menorca but I'm sure someone will.

Redandblue11 · 24/09/2022 08:52

I had a couple of horsey style scarves in the very early 90s and I wore them as a teen … stolen/borrowed from my grandad who wore them in an utilitarian fashion as a gaucho in his farm.
I have not been to Menorca but the weather starts to get a bit unreliable, still warm though. But I would still go boho chic (which you do at a perfection mm) silk palazzos, camis and linen shirts on top, long dresses… for the wedding I think it depends if is a local traditional wedding or not so I am not sure.

Redandblue11 · 24/09/2022 08:53

loving the pup modelling the scarves 🧣

botemp · 24/09/2022 09:20

That adorable dog is definitely saying, "Thanks, I hate it."

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it again that men's fashion is the one to watch where women's wear has been dull as ditch water for far too long. But, alas, no one seems to want to pay me to publish that Hmm

Since Iranian women are bravely burning their head scarfs in protest I doubt they'll make a fashion resurgence ATM. The slight young men of NYC were also somewhat linked to gender politics and I partially think that's why it never took off as it didn't fit the narrative of which you'll have to head over to the feminism boards.

Menorca, it's the more discreet chic of the Belarics, isn't it? I'd say go for wafty kaftan and billowy white in more subdued patterns /solid colours. From my wardrobe I'd pulling out 70s inspired safari and or Sahara that YSL did so well. I wouldn't worry too much, it's a tourist destination so there will be all sorts. I assume you've already got the wedding outfit sorted though.

Although the headscarf may not be all that PC, I'd be glancing at the head scarfs of the 70s and YSL muse Loulou de la Falaise. I'm adding a few other pics that might help with inspiration.

More inspiration (Picasso was a terrible partner, allegedly, but he can't be too terrible as a personal parasol carrier). I didn't realise we can now attach 5 images at once, woohoo 🎉
