Grin at teletubbie. We got given a huge, hideous (think almost life size) green teletubbie when Dd1 was about 3. It wasn't even an official one and looked like a bad, resussie Annie used for first aid. It got put away "upstairs" (charity shop).

botemp · 29/12/2020 20:32

I'm in a very silly mood this evening so I'm losing it with a description of a bootleg resussie Annie Teletubbie towering over a 3yo. Not helped that we called him Dipshit (we were teenagers and teletubbies were a THING) and he was some sort of secret reggae musician with a very bad top hat. It's all creating very odd imagery.

I'm still clueless what to do about NYE beyond cracking out the digestive enzymes and eating things I know would otherwise totally mess me up. If I had a wonky Teletubbie I could have flambéed that, that'd be memorable...

Totally got Tellie distracted there. I've moved onto the Matches sale and am now eyeing these Raey boucle white trousers. They're cotton though, but lined with silk ^^ but definitely confused to what season they are meant to be then Confused

I'm also reverting to my teens and am liking these baggy jeans (also Raey, not in the sale but not crazy expensive), which appear to be massive jeans taken in a DIY-ish manner.

I am also clueless for NYE, I am not sure what to cook either ... I will go to supermarket later on and see what I can find ... I am thinking seafood.
What to wear also ...
And what to do other than putting music, playing board games, eating, watching tv... go for a walk ...
Oh those big jeans that takes me to a younger me, well I am still partial to slightly big jeans.

Floisme · 30/12/2020 09:59

Ha those jeans remind me of one of my first forays back into sewing: Toast jeans from the charity shop, a piece of elastic at the back and two very clumsy tucks at the front.

I like those joggers Red - I bet they'd look good with a silk shirt.

Not bothering with NYE. I cannot be arsed any more with pretending there's something special about a day / evening that's pretty much exactly the same as the previous 300.

quirkychick · 30/12/2020 16:54

Grin at Dipshit. It was a very big, very scary toy with a white face.

I think we're going to have some lamb steaks with port sauce and some good cheese for NYE. Dd1 wants to stay up, me not so much.

botemp · 30/12/2020 17:12

NYE sorted finally. Digital zoom party set up. Spaghetti with scallops, lemon, breadcrumbs and shit ton of flat leaf parsley because it's a poor man's dish (originally) and superstition here is to eat like pauper on old year's Eve and live like a king in the new year. Then all the fried foods (buying it in, no one wants to wake up to a chip shop smell) and savoury biscuits (will make those).

I'm thinking of wearing my bargain Margiela jumpsuit tucked into boots (it's cold, and I suspect there might be a bit of fireworks to see despite ban so will probably go out for a minute even to just socially distance toast with the neighbours).

[waves languidly] well the entire casa bani came down with COVID for Christmas. I’m just barely dragging my nose over the parapet tonight. I’ve had a splitting non stop headache for three days and have just wandered between my bed and the toilet trying to sleep it away. Don’t catch COVID folks. However the others are fairly ok but we’ve all lost sense of taste - no point in elaborate NYE dinners for us!

CatherineMaitland · 30/12/2020 22:33

Sorry Bani - hope you feel better very soon.

Not usually bothered about NY but I won't mind kicking 2020 on the way out.

quirkychick · 31/12/2020 09:44

Oh, bani, I hope you all feel better soon. Can you freeze the food? I remember having flu one Christmas, years ago at my parents', I certainly didn't eat much festive food that year.

Not COVID, but dd1 has been feeling off and had a very sore throat. Cue lots of blood tests and it turns out she must have had glandular fever, but is over it now (luckily, not too badly), so all the teenage lethargy has been something else. I've told her she needs to make sure she eats plenty of nutritious food and gets plenty of sleep.

The zoom NYE sounds fun, bo. We usually have friends over with a buffet and wine, but this year, just us and a nice dinner will do. I may or may not stay up, as dd2 has slept appallingly the last two nights, so it depends on if I manage a nap and how I feel later.

botemp · 31/12/2020 09:58

Poor you Bani Flowers that's literally the worst Christmas present ever. There were lots of chefs developing Christmas menus for people with (long) covid and lost taste buds here, it didn't sound all that appetising, but I remember fresh ginger being a flavour that registered really well. Although I don't know how nice it is to ingest a lot of it, I sometimes juice it into a vegetable juice and it's not that much but I'm very awake and 'on' after.

Meh, Catherine, 2020 still not the worst year I had, just a lot less free, and without meaning to be a total downer, fair chunk of 2021 isn't going to be that different. A NYE 'party' is a good temporary distraction though. I'm mostly excited to eat 'forbidden' foods though, I thought the elimination diet I'm on would only last 6 weeks, until I was informed I had to keep it up after while testing each individual group (9 of them)

I saw some news on why the UK covid variant might me more contageous as it appears to affect children more (they're still investigating here, they're testing an entire primary school where sadly a young-ish teacher died quite suddenly. 5 of those tested have the mutant strain but it's assumed all infections are the British one), so they're catching it with more pronounced symptoms (but probably lots asymptomatic) and passing it on, so that would explain the contageous effect especially since children are mostly exempt from rules. Not surfaces then, Comptoir Des Cottoniers Hmm

Poor thing quirky, but on the upside this is probably the only time a teenager can say it's not from kissing and actually be believed.

Redandblue11 · 31/12/2020 10:10

Get well soon casa Bani, what a rotten Christmas period for you.

And your daughter quirky hope she is on the mend.

I am not that optimistic for 2021 either...
What most hurts me is not being able to visit my family, although I can speak to them regularly and see them through video call. I cannot even imagine how it must have felt years ago when many people had to flee my country in exile and my parents couldn’t call or write letters to family left behind as it was too dangerous. I was a child so I thought that was normal...

Yes, the new said variant has transmitted a lot quicker amongst children and my son’s school had entire classes isolated before Christmas with loads of cases. We have been lucky so far, only so far...

I still like a good distraction so we will cook paella tonight and at midnight came out to say cheers with next door neighbours.

botemp · 31/12/2020 10:18

Understandably really hard Red Flowers I'd also be a bit concerned that they seem to all be getting the Russian vaccine which most Russians don't even want to take. You hear so little news out of South America and Africa it's so weird, like covid is only happening here.

XingMing · 31/12/2020 15:02

Get well very quickly TeamBani and feel better. 2021 will be waiting when you're ready.

Happy 2021 to us all; may it be an improvement on 2020. xx

quirkychick · 31/12/2020 15:45

Thanks for your kind words for dd1. My dB had glandular fever for 6 months and had to go back a year for his GCSEs. I think dd1 has had it quite lightly, her bloods were all normal this week.

red, that is hard. I have seen the author, Isabel Allende speak twice, often about the situation in Chile (she was also extremely funny - very much would recommend).

Floisme · 01/01/2021 11:26

Oh Bani you poor thing - hope you all make a speedy recovery.
And best wishes to your daughter quirky - glandular fever can be so debilitating. And to you Red and to everyone missing their family.

I don't think NYE could have been any more low key: wore my favourite men's cardigan: Horne Brothers - 'by appointment to HM Elizabeth II' - been in administration a couple of times, not sure if they're still around. We had pasta for tea then watched the last episode of The Crown - Xmas Shockwhich I'd already seen but without Mr Flo - followed by The Apartment (best Christmas / new year movie ever). Dosed off and woke up to fireworks.

Floisme · 01/01/2021 11:28

No idea what the random shock faced Santa is doing there - The Crown is ace.

quirkychick · 01/01/2021 15:13

flo, dp and I watch the Crown in Sundays evenings, I agree, it's ace. Dd1 appears to have had glandular fever and now is fine (according to tests), she had a sore throat for a long time, but that was all, very luckily.

botemp · 01/01/2021 15:20

You're all so restrained, the Crown was binged in days here Blush I liked it better than last season but the first two really were the best

Happy New Year everyone. It's crap weather and cold can you be vicariously hungover when you don't drink 😑

OP posts:
CatherineMaitland · 01/01/2021 15:42

Happy 2021 to all; may it bring you only good things!

Soo cold here, I've been wearing my dressing gown and a blanket all day - not exactly elegant. Central heating is just not keeping up.

quirkychick · 02/01/2021 17:03

I may have binged the first season of the Crown by myself and now watch with dp on Sundays. Very late to the party - but currently binge-watching Call My Agent, enjoying all the Parisian clothes, scenes etc.

Happy New Year, CatherineMaitland. It has been really cold here, too. We seem to have had lots of cold weather already this winter. Atm, I'm living in my duvet coat and thermal layers!

botemp · 02/01/2021 17:44

I really enjoy call my agent, I have to check if I've actually seen the last season. I think I last saw the Cannes season last, or maybe one season after that?

I've got three other French shows lined up for Netflix bingeing (it takes me forever to get to them, but luckily French shows seem to go quick once you get into them), Family Business (with one of my favourite characters from call my agent), Twice Upon a Time (which sounds wonderfully bonkers French art house style) and The Bonfire of Destiny which is a bit feminist lens historical costume drama.

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 02/01/2021 19:27

I loved Call My Agent, I will try the ones you mention Bo
I put a monki order, a couple of joggers , a black and a lavender one and a puff sleeve white denim shirt and a cotton top with a bit/hint of a snake print to it.
They pretty low in price in the sale, hopefully they look good. My last online order did not work out and I vowed never again ... but I cannot see us here out of tier 4 any time soon so I took the plunge as I really want joggers.

quirkychick · 03/01/2021 10:13

Oh, I will add those to my list, bo. I've nearly finished the three seasons of Call My Agent on Netflix. Wikipedia tells me there's one more to go.

Good luck with the monki order, red. Sounds like a nice selection, I haven't bought from them before. I have just ordered a burgundy, tartan(ish) scarf from plumo, that I don't need but like the colours of.

botemp · 04/01/2021 10:04

Stuck into The Bonfire of Destiny last night, good so far, very immersive but if you're anyway claustrophobic, fear crowds, or have a fear of fire, the first episode is a bit full on. It's only the first episode that's like that, but it's very stirring.
