I think you just mean tailored trousers in the male tradition, Flo. I think somewhere in the early 00s women's trousers went wonky in ready to wear with lots of stretch that made arses and hips look larger, that emphasis isn't there as much anymore as we don't go overboard with stretch anymore (drastically shortens lifespan of garments) but the patterns hardly changed. I remember it being strange at the time because a large posterior was something to be super embarrassed about (over here they called it having a black person's bum and it was a very passive aggressive dig with lots of tinkly laughs between women Hmm), and every woman of a certain age was obsessed with hiding their saddle bags (never hear anyone about those anymore, thankfully).

I actually like the Cos ensemble (am wearing a forest green polo neck now) but cannot unsee Mrs Trunchbull Forest Ranger. There is something quite awesome about that idea.

Sooverthemill · 17/12/2020 10:40

@70sduvet we did that too, drawing pins in the soles of our shoes and the waistbands rolled up until Miss Lomas the ancient French teacher ( who taught my mother) would make us correct our insurrections. Ah memories of school in the late 60s early 70s.

I like a clip cloppy shoe, makes me feel grown up

Floisme · 17/12/2020 14:21

Not only tailored trousers - when my son was a teenager we both fitted the same jeans size for a time and his looked much cooler (on me) than my own ever did. I snaffled one pair when he grew out of them but; much as I liked them it just felt too weird. I guess I should order some online to try - they were only H&M or somewhere similar.

I guess it's largely down to body type and yet I wouldn't say I was a boyish shape any more. I used to be but time and childbirth and the menopause put paid to that.

Floisme · 17/12/2020 14:22

I like the forest ranger outfit by the way.

Redandblue11 · 19/12/2020 22:25

How are you all?
I am still trying to be positive... but bloody h* is hard .
Tier 4 now.

Redandblue11 · 19/12/2020 22:26

I like that green outfit too Bo , but that wouldn’t look good on me.

Redandblue11 · 19/12/2020 22:29

Flo those barrel leg jeans from whistles have been perfect. So easy to wear. An absolute convert now .

botemp · 20/12/2020 07:20

All this love for the forest ranger Hmm I didn't dislike it I just wasn't loving it. I think the whole strong shoulders narrow on the hips skirt sort of make you feel constricted wearing it, almost like you're a walking mattress.

Red just tell Bani she needs more shoes Wink, that helped me when I was grumpy about strict lockdowns.

I got seduced by the Arket sale and ordered some knee high tan boots (because I need some self inflicted torture in my life, apparently) as well as lots of hats Confused I'm also hovering overing a pair of linen PJs in the H&M sale, just worried they'll be scratchy but the reviews say they're soft but I'm convinced they're liars...

Also, all this talk of dressing up for Christmas had me nosing through my wardrobe and I'm now contemplating going all formal wear in the form of a beaded red dress because, fuck it, why not? But it's probably a bit insane.

Overing Confused I don't know what that is either...

Hi everyone, I just discovered this thread....hope it's ok if I join?

I'm in Ireland and am always indulging myself with Pinterests and insta posts on French style. Currently loving Hannah @cocobeautea

quirkychick · 20/12/2020 09:05

Welcome, Edel.

I quite like the forest ranger too Grin. I think I have quite a few green jumpers but not trousers or skirts. Long boots are v useful, just hard to find good ones, a bit like jeans in that they have to fit well in lots of places.

botemp · 20/12/2020 09:25

Welcome Edel, feel free to join we're an international bunch, quite a few Irish posters IIRC.

Quirky the skirt wasn't really a true green but one of those in between sludge colours I know you like as well. It shows the colour better on their website although it doesn't show the tinge of green on there. It's a bit of a bargain, I may need to reconsider it...

Yes, tan boots are great but my many years search for the perfect pair continually leaves me feeling hollow inside as they just don't seem to be out there. My not tan Chloe boots had soothed me a bit for the past year but pretty sure the Arket boots won't be it. But you have to kiss many frogs and all that...

quirkychick · 20/12/2020 10:57

I don't think perfect long boots exist, tbh. My ancient duo, black ones are pretty good but not quite tall enough, so the top comes a bit too low, especially as I have quite defined calves, so I end up with boots that are a bit too wide. That or lace up, long boots but they're a whole different look.

Floisme · 20/12/2020 10:57

Welcome Edel, hope you stick around.

I mostly just like the forest ranger colours bo. I'm rethinking the Christmas outfit too. I should really be worrying about food as we didn't order a turkey since there are only two meat eaters, but we haven't planned an alternative yet either. But anyway I tried on those velvet flares and instantly chucked them back in the cupboard. I'd forgotten how narrow they are down to the knee and then how much they, well... flare. Plus I've no idea what shoes I ever wore with them. I'm sure their time will come again but it's not yet. What's weird is I first retrieved them a couple of years ago and went out in them. There are probably photos. I think I must have been drugged.

I'm glad you're liking the barrel legs Red. I'm very tempted now to see if I can pick up a second pair in the sales. But I find Whistles sizing so unpredictable I'd probably have to order 3 pairs and, much as I like them, I'm not sure I can be arsed.

quirkychick · 20/12/2020 10:57

Nice skirt too, btw.

CatherineMaitland · 20/12/2020 13:46

After yesterday's news I could do with cheering up, and having eaten the last of the mince pies already, I'm feeling tempted by this skirt - www.johnlewis.com/boden-elizabeth-wrap-maxi-skirt-deep-forest/p5199677?size=12#product The Cos one is nice too but more formal and I'm not sure I'd have anywhere to wear it for years.

Welcome Edel

botemp · 20/12/2020 15:43

Normally I'd totally sniff disdainfully at the fabric for that asking price but with my fuck it mentality I say, go for it Catherine, you could probably dress it down with a jumper to an extent if you come regret the rash decision.

Meanwhile I've discovered my red beaded dress is too big and since it's backless it droops down the shoulders and I run the risk of exposing my top half while eating so I'm back to a green silk painterly abstract patterned Christian Wijnants dress with interesting sleeves. I ordered the linen PJs in an attempt to cheer myself up. Although they're charcoal grey so not sure they qualify as cheery...

Why turkey Flo? It's always confused me why that is the popular choice in the UK since it has to be a relatively recent import and an American one at that. What did you all eat before, goose?

OP posts:
Floisme · 20/12/2020 16:04

Why turkey 😮 Yeh I assume it's American. Dickens writes about beef and / or goose as I remember. But goose - like turkey would be too much to get through, and one of us doesn't eat red meat so beef, lamb etc are all out too. Chicken doesn't feel very special so we may all have fish. It's no big deal in the scheme of things.

botemp · 20/12/2020 16:14

I've done a whole wild seabass baked in sea salt (with some Italian flavours stuffed in the belly) for Christmas before and it was really nice and super easy and stress free (except you need to buy more salt than you think). It's good for a small number of people.

OP posts:
Floisme · 20/12/2020 16:18

Yeah our son suggested that too - good call 👍

CatherineMaitland · 20/12/2020 16:30

That would be the plan. With any luck the lining would cling to all my bumps and the rest of it will look okay. Asymmetric often works for me plus I'm attracted by the colour.

Usually when I fantasy shop I pick out things to look at more closely in new tabs and then realise I have selected 37 different black polo necks to examine, plus a black cardigan or shirt dress if I'm feeling really adventurous.

We had paella last year Flo, made a nice change and looked suitably festive and dramatic.

XingMing · 20/12/2020 18:33

We are having goose, because we are only three up. But we are arguing about the veg.

botemp · 20/12/2020 18:53

Over here goose is always served with red cabbage and apple puree, I assume to cut through the richness of the goose fat. Next door in Germany they also have roast chestnuts with it and all sort of dumplings (as well as the above).

Ah 70sduvet we used to put thumb tacks in our shoes too. I’d totally forgotten.

Love the Ammy Nord boots. I found IM boots deathly uncomfortable. I think it was one particular style maybe?

Bani I think you’ve curated a great capsule shoe collection.

Welcome Edel - I’m in Ireland too.

Sympathies to those going into Tier 4. What a lot of last minute disappointment and rejigging. We’re probably not far behind.

botemp you put the idea of the Loewe cargo pants in my mind and when I saw them 50% off it felt like fate. Less Ms Trunchbull forest ranger (which I liked) and maybe more Ms Trunchbull Army ranger?
