For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Happy new year, username change but it’s still Blue

I’ve been using Timeless Vitamin C for a few days and the results are amazing. Even my husband noticed. Feel that I can wear less makeup now that my skin is starting to look better. Can’t believe how dehydrated my skin was and that I didn’t realise.

The only thing with the TVC is that it’s giving me a bit of sauna face sweatiness in the daytime. I feel I might be applying too much (5 squirts)?? Or is there something in the ingredients? What ingredients cause my‘sauna face’ @botemp?

Spent some time this Christmas reading up on skincare ingredients and trying to get my head around it. Still a way to go but I’m so happy with the changes I’ve made. And addicted to the morning and night routines. Even after NYE I did a full cleanse and moisturise. I’ve never done that before Blush

BlueSkies2020 · 01/01/2020 23:29

Just another question about Vitamin C- can you use it at night if it’s affecting my base for makeup? Or is this best avoided?

Also I’ve been looking at a bottle of Holland and Barratt Hyaluronic acid and vit c serum I got for Christmas. Would this be good to use as my evening serum? I’m trying to get my head around the INCI. I’m about to run out soon of the Algenist AA barrier serum and won’t be repurchasing (expensive, I’m sure there are better serums for less). Also have the Caudalie revivalist serum (spelling?) but hesitant to use it because worried it too heavy.

BlueSkies2020 · 01/01/2020 23:38

Also just wanted to say a massive thank you to the generosity of all on this thread for sharing your knowledge and advising a novice with kindness - especially Bo! I’m feeling so much more positive and confident this New Years Day than last year!

Diving into threads again! Happy New Year!

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2019 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

When I got that all over body excema I panic bought a tub of vitamin C powder from The Ordinary, thinking I was going to mix it with my skin lotion to bleach the after-rash from my body. In the end I couldn’t be arsed. However, of an evening I’ve started tipping a little into my hand and mixing it with the Hada Labo lotion and applying directly to my face. It dissolves immediately, no grittiness at all. So that’s my vitamin C serum then sorted?

Impulse bought a moisturiser from Holland and Barrett on NYE (so still 2019). Beauty Kitchen Seahorse Plankton. Liking it so far, but based on feelings not science (nice smell, spreads nicely, fallen for skin benefits of plankton and stuff). Also am patch testing on face.

Angry The Flusher - money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Bioeffect Daytime moisturiser – got a tub in last Christmas sale, because I have a yearning for the serum after a sample was very promising but I’m not paying those prices. However the cream has an annoying texture that is very difficult to spread so you end up tugging madly at your skin. Dumb.

Halo The Jack & Rose - the product you’ll never let go of

Very tempted to say the COSRX morning cleanser. If it were available to buy in a shop, so I could just pop in and get it, it would be.

Biscuit The LTB - it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Hm nothing deserves such harsh words this year!

Envy The Child Prodigy - that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Hada Labo Lotion, bought in Poland. Some sort of European version? Can’t be bought abroad/online. Bloody Rossman. Have to schedule regular trips to Poland.

Smile The Worker Bee - never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Basiron bensoyl peroxide 5% …
Beauté Pacifique Super 3 Booster. This one is either in this category or the Flusher. I won’t know until I ditch it.

Hmm The Troll - the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

The Ordinary Niacinamide + Zink.

Confused The Flabbergaster - that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

The Glamglow mud mask, bought after people here recommended it for the nose. I don’t know if it does amazing things, but it’s the only mud mask EVER I like to use.

Blush The Sinner - oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

As usual – patch testing everything at once on my face.

ClientListQueen · 02/01/2020 14:10

I'm glad someone else likes the beauty kitchen stuff Grin
I got it for my secret Santa and she adores it

SallieSallow · 02/01/2020 17:23

Hi Banivani 👋 and Happy New Year everyone!

Blue Vit c is best used in the morning as it protects your skin and boosts your spf. I’ve still got the old dropper system on my Timeless & use three fairly decent sized drops, not sure how that equates to your squirts Grin but 5 sounds like quite a lot. It’s never affected my makeup so you might be using too much.

I do use a HA serum (Vichy 89) in my evening routine but that one with Vit c in it might be overkill if you’re using Vit c in the morning as well.

BlueSkies2020 · 02/01/2020 21:17

Thanks @SallieSallow I suspected I was using too much. My face feels very wet Grin I will try using half as much tomorrow. I have read reviews of the Vichy serum, I think I will give that one a try as it’s very affordable. I’ve nearly run out of the Dr Sebagh repair hyaluronic acid serum otherwise I’d have used that . It’s very expensive (£70 for 30ml) and I’m not convinced it does very much

EnidButton · 03/01/2020 00:48

Hope everyone had a nice time over the festive season. I was given a couple of beauty related gifts. Most of the REN rose Otto range because DH knew I loved the body wash and a Lisa Eldridge lipstick that he's seen me eyeing up when the first came out last summer but they sold out before I got one. Very impressed he'd even made note of the shade!

Anyway it's the best lipstick formula I've ever used. Sort of pillowy and smooth. Very easy to apply and has a sheen finish. Really lasts which was surprising. Colour is brighter (Love of my Life) than expected but love it. It will be perfect for summer. You'd love the packaging bo. Very weighty and the lid is magnetic so it closes itself almost.

REN rose stuff all lovely, especially the body oil. Leaves a really nice glow on the skin without being at all oily. Going to try the bath oil tomorrow.

Intended to do snailies tonight but I've had a head ache for a couple of days so hopefully when it shifts.

EnidButton · 03/01/2020 00:49

And happy new year everyone! 💫

EnidButton · 03/01/2020 00:50

*he saw

banivani · 03/01/2020 08:49

In general I've lost my interest in skincare I have to say, there are too many brands with too fussy names that are too hard to get hold of and don't make me gorgeous directly. Wink

SallieSallow · 03/01/2020 12:06

That lipstick sounds lovely Enid I just googled and love the colour, very tempted as I don’t usually get the ‘clown effect’ with pinks. And of course it’s by lovely Lisa too ❤️

Banivani I’ve not lost interest in skincare but now I’ve got a routine I’m happy with I’m not really interested in trying new products anymore, and yes all the brands and especially the bloggers around now are making it more and more confusing. I’d rather hear what real people with no financial incentive think which is why I like this thread so much.

I got one of those styled by Susie things for Christmas and I’ve just filled the questionnaire in. Has anyone had it done? The questions are not very detailed at all so not expecting it to be of much use to me but will see what they come back with. You do send photos as well so maybe they go more off that. I look jaundiced in my no makeup face selfies so half expecting they’ll tell me to go to the doctors before I do anything else Grin

EnidButton · 04/01/2020 00:34

So I was going to try the Ren bath oil tonight but the shower pipe thingy leaked and I flooded through the dining room ceiling instead. Blush Thank goodness I hadn't used any oil yet...that stuff is expensive! Wink

(Dining room fine btw. Caught it at the first few drips. Might need a lick of paint but otherwise it's ok.)

EnidButton · 04/01/2020 00:45

Oh and I have two more lip products. Bought with boots points. Fenty lip gloss in fu$$y and lanolips in rhubarb.

Fenty looks like a revlon one I used to wear Out Out back in the late 90's. That sort of brownish pink kind of shade. Not what I was expecting. It feels quite gloopy on. But it's shiny af which is what I wanted and is a brilliant topper for some of my berry lipsticks. Glad I didn't pay for it though.

Lanolips isn't as bright or tinted as I'd like but feels very nice and will be good for dry lip days when out and about and I can't smear Lansinoh on. Happy with it.

SallieSallow · 04/01/2020 11:10

I’ve ordered that Lisa Eldridge lipstick 💄 🐑🐑🐑 Blush

I’ve looked at lanolips before Enid but since I started slathering lansinoh on at night I’ve found I don’t really need anything during the day.

EnidButton · 04/01/2020 12:39

I hope you like it Sallie! I think Queen has some of them too.
Lansinoh is my ultimate holy grail product. Smile

TantricTwist · 04/01/2020 16:31

Happy New Year everyone 🥂

I haven't been on for ages but it's been lovely having a read through this thread for a catch up. I started a new job a few nonths ago which has been busy and tiring, but have had a good few days off though to recuperate.

I love the LE lipsticks. My favourite is Fawn but I also have Beauty and Muse as I bought a trio to get the velvet bag.

My skin has been looking great the last few days. I've been using Murad AHA / BHA exfoliating cleanser which my face seems to adore followed by Superdrug serum and my penultimate bottle of the discontinued LRP Toleraine fluide (have we found a suitable replacement yet?) I like Origins ginseng gel moisturiser as a replacement so far.

I've been trying richer creams at night but my skin responds best to the above combination. I also still use Pixi retinol toner, pixi rose toner most days and occasionally PC BHA 2% liquid and sometimes Liquid gold.

I will defo buy the cerave hydrating cleanser most of you are raving about although tbh I'm quite happy with the neutrogena blemish free face wash I use, bought it for the DC but seems fine for me and much cheaper than the Murad I was using.

ClientListQueen · 04/01/2020 23:46

I am so full of a cold that the skin below my nose has been bleeding Sad
Anyway I have slathered REN omega 3 serum on and can confirm it doesn't sting one bit even on incredibly sore skin

EnidButton · 05/01/2020 00:09

I forgot you had the LE lipsticks too Tant The little bag set looks gorgeous. Hope your new job is going well.

Feel better soon Queen Brew

SallieSallow · 05/01/2020 10:08

Hi Tant 👋

I was looking at the set of 3 but thought I’d best not get carried away!
Are these lipsticks limited edition as if I (hopefully) love it I might need to stock up.

Hope you feel better soon Client Flowers

TantricTwist · 05/01/2020 17:20

She only does a couple of batches a year @SallieSallow so I'd say yes they are quite limited really. I love the Fawn so much I bought another 2 as spare. Silly really but I just couldnt help myself as they suit my colouring so much esp as a daytime lippy.

@ClientListQueen I always find that good old vaseline works on red sore noses affected by a cold. Hope you feel well soon.

@EnidButton Hi, new job is going very well. The little velvet bag is perfect for keeping them together and separate from everything else, it makes them seem more elusive and magical somehow. Well it does for my little collection of make up anyway and it makes me smile which is what counts. Sounds ridiculous doesnt it Blush

EnidButton · 05/01/2020 17:22

Not ridiculous at all Tant. I've still got mine in the box because unwrapping it each time feels more special than just having it with my other ones. I love nice packaging and the velvet bag with the set is beautiful.

TantricTwist · 05/01/2020 19:50

I keep mine in the box as well Grin EnidButton

SallieSallow · 05/01/2020 20:09

I can see these Lisa lipsticks becoming a dangerous addiction....Grin I wonder if she’ll bring more makeup out, though should probably hope she doesn’t as I’ll want to try it all Blush

TantricTwist · 05/01/2020 20:14

I hope so SallieSallow she works with Lancome so knows how these things are produced etc and I suppose as a makeup artist knows which colours suit the most people. I mean she has got it spot on with the Velvet Fawn for me, I will give her a huge hug for that if I ever bump into her Grin
