Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Carrying over from previous:

Tsn, are you having issues with the SPFs over the Dr. Jart Ceramidin? I've heard that it doesn't play well for daywear and SPF/makeup, breaking it up throughout the day.

Bagel, how have you gotten on with the Rosette Ceramide Gel? I've never tried it but it's perhaps of interest as an alternative to the DJ Ceramidin.

Enid, I haven't bought a thing for Easter yet, not even given it much thought either Blush. It was never such a gluttony fest when I grew up, which is surprising as my mother didn't need much of an excuse create one of those. We always just baked 'egg men' which were bread dough men with an egg attached to their belly and the little arms holding it in place, the egg would go in raw and then be 'cooked' in the oven and some raisins for eyes. It was vile Envy

That sounds er...interesting
bo Grin We decorated hard boiled eggs and then rolled them as kids. There's a big hill near us where everyone gathers on Easter Monday to roll their eggs down it. DH had never heard of it before so I think it's a Northern English thing and maybe in Scotland too. It's cold up here, we have to make our own fun. Grin

I don't normally bother with Easter other than buying chocolate but thought I'd make the effort this year. Only me and DH but have a roast dinner planned and might bake a cake.

For anyone wanting to be wheat or gluten free, M&S have some very good things in. Bit expensive but gluten free tends to be unless you're making things from scratch. Their hot cross buns are very good.

Thank you for the new thread bo! Shiny fresh one just in time for Spring 🌈🌱 Clocks go forward this weekend!

work-outs and puppy.

Hold up! A puppy?! Shock I need puppy details please Ts

We used to poke a hole at each end of an egg, blow out the middle, paint them, then hang them with ribbons on twigs with blossom buds 🌸on in a vase in front of the fireplace. My DM's friend used to paint beautifully intricate patterns 🧚🏻‍♀️when she would join us.
My DM still does this every year only she hangs decorated non real eggs now that she has bought or been gifted, with fluffy chicks 🐥and ceramic white bunnies🐇 on the hearth Grin
At Christmas she goes all out too with mini Santas that were gifted to her with magnetic hands that climb up the fireplace Smile

Hi all, thanks for the new thread Bo

I'm after coming across a new unopened tube of Isotrexin acne gel which was one of two prescribed to teen dd last year and not used. I'm a bit excited to see it's ingredients but not sure it's really any stronger than over the counter stuff anyway

Hello! Has anybody else found The Ordinary azelaic acid 10% to be wonderful stuff? I find it makes my skin brighter and fewer spots. I’m also aware there is a 20% prescription strength formula made by Bayer - would be interested to see if anyone finds it better? Given that the one by The Ordinary is under £6 though it’s pretty damn good.

I looked on that link as I'd been thinking about trying Azelaic acid but it says it's no longer available?

Sorry if someone has previously mentioned it - but where do people buy Biologique Recherche from now please? As I'm almost out of mine.

Hi. Catching up after a break and just read Bo's anti-ageing info sheet. Fabulous! I follow most of the pm routine but wondered if someone could recommend a purse friendly product containing ceramides and/or peptides as I don't currently use these. Though I used to use Cerave PM moisturiser so I wonder if I should go back to this.

Checking in to new thread.
We used to do egg blowing and decorating too. Other than that it was mostly spent at mass. (Ex-Catholic). One small Easter egg each and a roast lamb dinner.
Interested to see all the love for Vichy on here now, must re-examine the range.

At the risk of sounding like a crabby bitch, can someone else do the shouty caps on my behalf for a change? I'm growing weary with having to repeat myself on this subject all the time.

Our attempts at egg decoration always went wrong, Tant. I remember attempting to blow out eggs and it just ending up a giant mess. The year my mother wanted to use all natural dyes from beetroot and turmeric and it all looking rather drab. The year I was so excited to have a little rotating plastic thing to decorate eggs with, of course it broke down with the first use... I think I need better Easter memories...

Seventy, since the 20% azelaic is prescription only it has to prove efficacy and have the required % on the label by law as it's a medicine, not something that can be said for OTC cosmetics, so in that sense a preferred option, whether you need that extra strength is another question and probably best answered by someone who prescribes it. Though I do believe it's not that hard to get through the Boots Acne clinic, think it's only twenty quid or something (the Azelaic, not sure if they charge anything for the acne clinic service, I think it's free).

Hello, I wouldn't care much about having peptides in your routine. I don't consider it essential and the science around it is very woolly so it's more of a nice if product than a staple of every anti-ageing routine. The Cerave PM lotion should be on sale late March/early April in the UK, if it worked for you before it's probably a good bet.

Indeed appears to have launched nine new products. It's a bit bizarre as they look like fancier TO products Confused haven't checked the INCIs yet though.

Hello everyone, have I made it into your intro Bo as one the the “new inquisitive faces”?! I’m very honoured Smile

Yes Bo, completely agree about using a doctor for injectable treatments. I think this woman is more than an aesthetician but I know she’s not a fully-fledged dermatologist (I know the word in Greek but not sure of official equivalent in English). Anyway to be honest, it sounds a little scary so not sure I would be up for it anyway!

Not sure what the shouty caps part refers to but happy to do some shouting on our behalf if you tell me who to shout at and what the crime was GrinGrin

Thanks for the info on the azelaic acid too. Has been added to my "book" of skincare notes.

Yong, I also find my skin isn’t good when I’ve been ill. It seems to lose all its nutrients and just dry up. Hope you’re glowing again soon.

Enjoyed reading all your lovely Easter traditions. Easter is HUGE here (Greece). The biggest celebration of the year - much bigger than Christmas - so lots and lots of customs and traditions and eating GrinGrinCake

Brandon started off at Indeed didn't he, I think he was there for long enough.
I've always thought indeed and Hylamid had similar outer packaging, plain boxes with a block of colour.
Maybe the shouty claps were at me banging on about Retinol againGrin
I'm probably best ignored on the subject cause I've little fear when it comes to my skin as I rarely react and even then it's mild.
Wonder how long more that can last though, the joys of the peri menopause has to hit in the next few yearsShockSmile

Bo I like the Rosette Ceramide Gel very much. I realised after a while that I was using too much and so it was quite sticky (which I didn't mind that much esp at night) so I use a pea size amount now which is great. I also don't need much because I'm using so many hydrating layers before. I think it will last about 9-10 months judging by what's left.

A few ppl said that Meishoku Ceracolla Perfect Gel is very similar but without macadamia oil, if that's an issue.

Sophie Azelaic Acid seems to be

BagelGoesWalking · 24/03/2018 12:18

Gaaah, presses my mistake. Sophie Azelaic Acid seems to be very popular, effective and not as problematic as some of the other TO products. Many have said applying it after moisturiser lessens any itchiness/tingle.

Shouty caps (not claps, I'm not that aggressive, I hope Blush) are reserved for the off prescription use of retinoids posters seeking advice on how to use them on here. So unless you were asking on behalf of DD, Lone, (and even then I'd say ask a professional) I'm just a little tired of lecturing caution and showing more concern for the prospective health of others' skin then they themselves seem to show.

Aside from that, all retinoids need to be 'fresh' (and technically should be kept in the fridge) so just hand it in at the pharmacy to have it disposed of properly. Even if it was fresh it would still be useless to you as it's a heavy duty acne medication.

The TO Azelaic is a thick silicone suspension though, isn't it? I think despite it being affordable it's one people go through very quickly as a result. From that perspective the prescription cream may be a bit more economical in use potentially.

Thanks Bagel. Have to say I'm a bit anti-TO after the retinoid I tried from there but all information is useful (and noted Bo's comments on it too) Smile

"Shouty claps" GrinGrinGrin

Oh it's quite nice to have people vying for my attention GrinWink I was meaning to ask about Frezyderm on here as it's pretty popular here (good children range too).

I have friends who use the Velvet Touch SPF and use it like a foundation in the summer as it has colour in it (perhaps there is a plain one too? Not sure). They rave about it. I've tried a sample but.... (a) I'm a bit pale so the colour was a bit too dark for me and (b) I don't wear foundation or BB cream or tinted moisturiser etc on a daily basis so I felt a bit odd. Maybe the colour in the sample just wasn't a good match for me..... Hmm

Have you used it Bo? I can send you the ingredients when next in pharmacy plus will find out about range of colours available and see if I can get samples for you.

Ok Bo, had a quick look on a Greek pharmacy site and there's an SPF 30 one and an SPF50 one and each one has a tinted version and a no-colour version.

Obviously I tried the tinted one. As I said, will try to get samples.

I went to drive tanks today. I left at 8.15am. It was grey with complete cloud cover. Yet I still applied SPF50 Grin.

I don't think the Cerave moisturising cleansing lotion is suiting me. Whilst it's on my skin it burns. It's definitely worse if I've used Redermic R the night before, or my PC acid the day before. I think I might have to use it in the shower instead. But I'm funny with shower gels (get random elbow ezcema. Would anyone like a decant of it? It's a big old bottle... Anyone else had this? What could be aggravating me?
