Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Ooh shiny brand new thread Smile 🐌🐌🐌 and love the title Grin thank you Bo

Talking of our frezyderm frenzy has anyone tried the tinted one?
And has anyone tried it with a primer or would that be complete overkill? I've still got some of the sample sizes of the REN primer I'd like to use up at some point.

Great new thread title 😂 I am pissed off as my skin has gone to pot in the last 10 days. As well as my sun allergy giving me a rash on my neck/collarbone area, the skin on my upper lip and lips has gone horrible.
It's always been my weak spot and I could just feel it deteriorating. I'm beginning to think it's connected to a food I'm allergic to, but I can't (ever) pinpoint what it is. It's not makeup as I don't wear any, I use a natural toothpaste and I haven't changed skincare. The only thing new was sunscreen, but the rest of my face was ok. Grrr, so frustrating as my skin has been happy for a good few months and I was really hoping flareups like this were a thing of the past.

Peony I don't mean that piriton gives me the rash I just meant it doesn't help it when I take it alongside the antibiotics. Even the non penicillin antibiotics do it to me. It's itchy and sore.

Love the title!

bo Defintely don't have the same colouring as Sali Hughes. Are you sure that was me? I avoid the colours she recommends usually, as she's warm.
Don't remember saying Lisa Eldridge either although might've said about her eyes being similar. Always been cool toned. Grin

EnidButton · 11/05/2018 21:07

eyes similar as in colour. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anne Hathaway is accurate anyway, as other people have said it too. Cool toned pale anyway.

botemp · 11/05/2018 21:12

Think it was more something along the lines of being similar to them, thus knowing what worked for them would usually work well for you. I vaguely remember some bitter disappointment around an Hourglass foundation stick recced by SH. But maybe you meant more dark hair/pale rather than undertones.

Morning all.

I'm determined to get back on here regulary.

Last night I went to the "Beauty Insiders" thread hosted at Selfridges by Caroline Hirons, Sali Hughes and Hannah Martin. I'n so glad I went; it was good fun. Anyone else there? My friend and I talked to all do them for quite some time. Sali spent ages with us. It was funny because the first thing I said to her, and to Caroline was "I have mild rosacea..." and they both looked at me as if I was bonkers. I must admit, I have often questioned the diagnosis. Anyway, I came away with a couple of skincare products and a couple do Bobbi Brown make up products 😁

Hope everyone is well?

Morning all Smile Great title Bo "tiny lovely people in my phone" Grin

How is your rash Mint? Saw your photo but somehow completely ignored it. Sorry Blush Does it itch?

Whether ET is a cool person or made up like that (I have no idea) the fact that she looks so much better as a cool colour (with her colour eyes etc) compared to later in life when she has lightened her hair and her skin is darker) is probably why most people think of her as having cool colouring. No chance of us being able to examine the veins in her wrists though to check...

Hi Pupsie, no unfortunately was not at that event but it sounds great. How were they all in real life? Can you get a second opinion about the rosacea?

Report
mintmagnummm · 12/05/2018 08:12

Sophie it's getting worse at the moment, it's weird because I finished the antibiotics last week but the rash always seems to carry on and spread getting worse before very slowly getting better after 1-2 weeks depending on severity. Yes it does itch but not constantly thank goodness. It's really flaring up my body dismorphia though :-(

pupsie that event sounds great. Did you get a goody bag?
Bo what’s your opinion on these Vit C serum capsules (apart from price) www.victoriahealth.com/product/AF-Vitamin-C20-Serum-Capsules/12811

No goodie bag. The event was £50 and £25 was redeemable against a purchase. I've not bought new skincare for ages plus is used up some actives and not repurchased or replaced so I was feeling that my routine was a little sparse.

I think I'll probably just continue doing what I'm doing re the *rosacea". Either way there arw things that make me flush so I will continue to avoid them.

I've met Caroline once before. They were all lovely and spent a long time chatting to people afterwards about all sort of stuff. I was most surprised by Sali who took so much time with people despite a queue forming.

Hello. I was on the earlier threads but fell off into real life grrrr.

To catch up I've made a start by buying some Frezyderm!

Thanks to all of you I am learning what's right for me (bit of Korean, bit of acid, lots of oils) and what doesn't (The Ordinary) So thankyou!

Hi Thencame

Pupsie that's sounds exciting so what did you buy then, don't keep us in suspense. And what did you all talk about?

mint your poor neck, hopefully it will go down. Are there any expert Medical specialists you can be refered to about the antibiotic situation as opposed to just your GP or have you done that already.

I'm very definitely cool toned. Someone once tried to put a yellow toned foundation on me and I looked like I needed treatment for jaundice Grin
My mum is v v dark olive skin, vaguely looks at the sun and instantly goes dark brown. Much like the rest of the family. Then there is me, and my dad being the vampire gingers

Tant no I've never been referred to anyone, maybe I'll ask my gp if there is such a person that could help. It's actually creeping up my face now too 😏😔

I askes Sali and Caroline what one thing they think would benefit my skin (been quite short on actives).

I talked to Sali about my routine in general. She agreed that DE Vit C is lovely. (I have run out grrr. It lasted 5 months so can't complain. DH isn't in the US for another 5 weeks and DE aren't currently shipping Vit C overseas so I've been using LRP Redermic C for a couple weeks. Went for sth unlikely to irritate as I've had issues with too-strong formulations). So, Sali agreed with that one. She poo poo'd my acid choice given I was only using it once a week and my skin looks non-Rosacea but a bit dull. She recommended Clarins Gentle Exfoliating Lotion so I bought that. I asked Hannah Martin which eyeshadow crayon stick she would recommend for my eye colour. I have 3 already and use them all the time but they are all quite similar. My eyes are quite hard to categorise. Not brown, not green, not quite hazel. She recommended the mauve so I got that. I also asked her for a recommendation on an eye pencil which would go with the crayons as I've wanted one for a while (my make up bag is ridiculously minimalistic).

Caroline suggested an oil. I have only tried one once before; a Neal's Yard. But I sort of just stopped. She recommended one of the Clarins ones. I went down to the beauty hall and tried some out and went for the Blue Orchid.

They weren't pushing particular brands. Most of what I bought was already on my radar. I certainly have been confused about acids. And oils. So all in all I felt that I came away with what I expected to rather than being sold stuff I'd not considered.

Oh, and my friend (who is young enough to be my daughter so different issues) bought an IT Cosmetics CC cream which she's been after for a while. Caroline poo poo'd it on account of snail slime. Sali suggested she start with vitamin C (she is 28). Everyone said what amazing skin she has.

Pupsie obvs I'm dying to know which acid Sali poo poo'd Grin

I have Clarins Lotus oil which I love but don't use that often, but lovely for when I have dry skin moments. The smell is just divine and lifts my spirits everytime i use it.

Try the TO vit C powder it's only £5 and disolves really easily into your moisturiser so isnt at all grainy or greasy.

I have to say I'm loving my PC 2% skin perfecting BHA I hope she didnt poo poo that because I think it works brilliantly on me.

Report
Pupsiecola · 12/05/2018 11:36

She didn't poo poo the acid per se; it was just the wrong one for my skin. I've tried a couple of TO Vi Cs. Thanks for the recommendation. I know DE suits me really well so am gonna wait for that Smile
