Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

They definitely don't make it easy!

I went with the Neutrogena. It remind me of the bio-essence in a very similar tub.

TantricTwist · 27/05/2019 15:55

For those of you who love LRP toleraine moisturiser - the one that's been discontinued - I've found that Origins ginzeng gel moisturiser is a really excellent replacement - I've mentioned this before but ages ago. I have both on the go (I actually refer the Origins one tbh)

JDSTER · 27/05/2019 20:09

A couple of pages ago ago Sallie mentioned I use both BHA and P50w. Indeed I do. P50 about twice a week with a retinoid on the other 5 nights. BHA maybe once a week in the morning at a weekend.

I’m still using the toleriane discontinued fluide with one bottle in reserve. I think I have a sample of ginzing Tant so I’ll try it when needed. I’m not too upset about moisturiser being discontinued however I opened a new Biore brightening milk today and it’s not the same!!Angry. All Japanese writing on the packaging, which has changed slightly from previous and I think this maybe a waterproof formulation. I remember people being upset when Biore watery essence changed to waterproof as well. It feels slightly greasy with a bit more ‘sheen’. The thing I loved about it was the ever do slightly matte finish to it. WHY do products change and or get discontinued? Sad

SallieSallow · 27/05/2019 22:34

Oh no JDSTER that is really annoying Angry I wonder with SPFs though if it’s to do with some kind of regulations, especially if they sell to the US market.

Which retinoid are you using these days? I’m coming towards the end of the retinoid oil from pestle and mortar and debating whether to start back on tret (my dealer has been to Spain again so I’m re-supplied Grin)

JDSTER · 28/05/2019 09:20

Thanks salli After I posted last night I googled and it’s been mentioned of course on reddit. I’d need to 2017 formulation to be sure it’s the right one but of course buying on eBay from Japan you’re never sure what you’ll get- even if it says it’s 2017 stock more than likely they’d send me the newer stuff Hmm

Retinoid wise, I’m using Medik 8 Crystal Retinal www.medik8.com/crystal-retinal.html. Contains retinaldehyde (meant to be a good one). I went straight for the top strength, having been using various retinoids beforehand, including differin. I’ve had no issues with dryness or irritation. I’m mostly through the first tube. Seems pretty good but we’re hard to please sallie Grin. It’s not blown my socks off. I have a tube of differin to use and I’ve also got some tret from Spain. I’ve tried a few times and it does give me dryness 2 days after use. I’ve never really persisted with it. I’m a bit scared for some reason Confused. I think I worry I’ll not protect my skin well enough (even though I use SPF every day). Anyway, I might pick it up again.

I’ve just opened a bottle of hado labo cleansing oil. I’ve only used DHC previously. It’s seems a bit lighter than the DHC. So far so good.

SallieSallow · 28/05/2019 14:02

JDSTER Tret gives me a lot of flaking and peeling too, especially in the colder months but I'm wary about using it during summer for the same reasons as you. I'm not very outdoorsy but do spend more time outside in summer (often unexpectedly!) and even though I top up with the bioderma spray I do worry about it being enough!

I'll consider the Medik8 one (has that come down in price? as seem to remember looking before and the cost put me off!) as I'd like to keep my tolerance up retinol wise with a view to going back onto tret in autumn.

JDSTER · 28/05/2019 17:04

Exactly the same sallie not particularly outdoorsy but can end up being outside with kids more than I expected. I’ve got LRP spray SPF for top ups.

The Medik 8 Crystal Retinal is just under £40. The more pricey one is the one Bo was using. The one I’m using more suited to an oilier skin.

Do you wait after you’ve cleansed for a while and then wait again before applying moisturiser?

SallieSallow · 28/05/2019 18:42

It must be the one Bo was using I’m thinking of, seem to remember it being £80ish.

And yes I leave a gap in between cleansing and ret, and again between ret and moisturiser. I leave gaps in between all products in my routine as feel it gives them more time to sink in and (hopefully!) Do Something Grin

EnidButton · 28/05/2019 21:26

Does anyone else run out of everything at the same time? I didn't start using them at the same time but they always seem to sync up. I'm becoming more and more expensive as I get oleft!

EnidButton · 28/05/2019 21:26

Older!

SallieSallow · 28/05/2019 21:49

Yes Enid I do to but I suppose it’s good in a way as if you can buy a few things from the one website you can take advantage of offers & free p&p etc. It is expensive but I’m trying not to bulk buy and just order as needed as keep forgetting what I’ve got Confused

Case in point, I’ve just found a P&M retinoid oil in my stash, do not remember ever buying a second one but obviously did Blush And I was just about to buy the medik8 retinoid so lucky I checked!

Outtheforest · 29/05/2019 15:26

Took a trip to the fancy pharmacy and sadly learnt that while they stock vichy and LRP they don't stock the full range so no vit C or spf spray mist for me. My purse is thankful though. Waiting for my delivery of Paula's choice BHA and plan to do a mass skincare purchase when next in the UK

EnidButton · 29/05/2019 19:22

Sallie True. Although the offers all seem to run out just as my products do! I have all my basics so it's things I don't need need but they make me feel nice.

Oh actually I do need shampoo and co dictionary from Lush. Who I'm sure are getting more and more expensive each time I buy from them.

EnidButton · 29/05/2019 19:23

Wtf is a co dictionary? Conditioner...

SallieSallow · 29/05/2019 19:38

Oh that’s a shame Out - any joy with the Vichy mineral 89? Hopefully you can stock up on the other bits once you’re over, and you’ll have a choice of products outside of Vichy and LRP as well.

Not sure what a co dictionary is Enid Grin but thanks to the joys of autocorrect I texted a friend earlier that I’d been shitting around all day Shock

banivani · 30/05/2019 12:19

My little bottle of P50w is running out. Do I now try the little p50 400 or the original P50? Or do I wait completely until the autumn?

SallieSallow · 30/05/2019 13:29

I couldn't find anywhere that sold the travel sizes Bani though Bo said she is able to get them, I can't remember where she buys from. I don't think they supply to the UK but might do to Sweden.

banivani · 30/05/2019 14:12

Well I have my three little bottles I’m working through so my only question is which one to open next. Grin

YesQueen · 30/05/2019 14:24

Botox top up for me booked on Saturday Grin

SallieSallow · 30/05/2019 18:14

Ahh right Bani I’ve never used it as was too tight to spend £60 on the full size, but if 400 is weaker maybe that one during summer but I’m no expert Smile

Is that your first top up YesQueen? I can’t remember when you had it done but seem to think it was a good while ago now.

YesQueen · 30/05/2019 18:17

No, had it a few times now. Last time was January so 5, nearly 6 months

EnidButton · 30/05/2019 21:07

I'm still pondering Botox. Might be good for migraines as a bonus.

I've gone old school today and bought shampoo and conditioner from Aussie. Can't resist a nice smelling hair product and they were £3 each, bargain. Shampoo and 3 min miracle for frizz and same again for dry hair. Probably because I saw them after coming in from the fine rain. My hair plus rain = Monica Geller on holiday.

EnidButton · 30/05/2019 21:08

How much do you pay Queen? Roughly? Most places don't give prices online.
