Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Bo you’re venturing into Tretinoin territory? Let us know how you get in with it. I don’t remember if you’ve used it before?

botemp · 01/02/2019 07:43

Only on my body for KP, JDSTER, but I had little understanding of it then and my GP was a big reckless in prescribing it at a high dose with the instructions of use once a day with no mention of building up tolerance. I stopped using it quickly thereafter, would go back to it if my KP ever got extreme again but that brief aggressive treatment did seem to do the trick in keeping it manageable.

I discussed it with my dermatologist who's more a run of the mill eczema and small ails sort and he did acknowledge whilst I'm sensitive my skin is in good health and what I react to is specific and tends to be the things in cosmetic skincare. He did laugh at me for asking (I was there for my hair), as he failed to see the use of it for me now but I'd rather know whether it is manageable for me at all or not.

I did see Medik8 are now offering a new intense version of the R-Retinoate combined with the crystal Retinaldehyde which sounded promising but it's £210 Shock I'm not keen on the formula either as they coloured it and added essential oils (though they use ones that are extracted differently and potentially non-irritating but they still only seem to be there for a nice smell).

Won't start on Tret anytime soon though, I'm in Paris currently and then traveling again next week which includes planes. Heading to London mid March as well so I'm trying to determine whether to start before or after that. Also would like to get an all mineral sunscreen in place before that just in case my usual sunscreens irritate. My derm, however, seems completely convinced I'll hardly have any issues Hmm

Hello all, checking in on the new thread... we've moved to temporary accommodation this week, while we do some renovations to our home so haven't had wifi for a while and life has been hectic... I'm seriously considering spending an unexpected tax refund on the NuFace (or Profhilo) but I'm feeling a bit guilty!! Blush Has anyone looked into Profhilo? My skin's become really saggy, seemingly overnight.

My skin's been pretty bad lately, very dry, flaky etc probably due to the dust/stress/cold/tret use..... but Cicaplast and Toleriane Ultra Nuit have made me look almost human!

WIll check on Waitrose smellies this weekend :)

SallieSallow · 01/02/2019 12:25

Bo I'd be inclined to wait till after your travels, I do much better with tret when the weather isn't cold, plus I don't like to use it when I'm travelling as it means carting a load of extra stuff with me in case I need to deal with flaking.

TSmummy there is a long thread on here about Profhilo - a couple of people raved about it but the majority didn't rate it.

Nuface gets mixed reviews too but I've read more positive (on here and other sites) than negative, you do need to give it a good few months though, it's not a quick fix unfortunately.

If it doesn't work I'm going to look into fillers for sagging as I'm sick of looking like a bull dog chewing a wasp Sad

Tsmummy08 · 01/02/2019 13:58

Thanks Sallie - I meant to add that I've used the Timeless vit C, a couple of years ago I think... it felt similar to SkinCeuticals but oxidised quickly so I didn't RP. IIRC it came from the States - if they've now got a UK distributor that might mean the shelf life is better (or not). Definitely worth a try!

SallieSallow · 01/02/2019 19:01

What was the texture of the timeless Vit c like Tsmummy? I’m (as usual) after a watery serum.

mintmagnummm · 02/02/2019 07:32

I feel like my eyes are getting more and more sensitive! They water so much and because I'm constantly wiping them they are looking very creepy and old! It's making me look very tired and I don't like it :-(
I've been to opticians about it and they said one of my eyes has a slightly blocked tear duct but the drops he recommended didn't help and also made my eyes sting. The corners are also looking dry and sore because of the wiping. I don't know what to do, can anyone suggest anything at all?

Got a few blocked pores at the mo too, they look a little inflamed 😏

Truckingonandon · 02/02/2019 07:55

Profhilo did two thirds of bugger all for me. Bloody hurts too.

SallieSallow · 03/02/2019 10:19

It doesn’t seem like the original posters who loved it ever came back to that thread either Trucking and yes it does sound painful, I’ll be going for fillers I think if no results with the nuface.

Mint very cold weather makes my eyes sore and watery (one of the reasons I don’t spend much time outdoors at this time of year!) so hopefully yours will improve once we head towards spring. In the meantime could you ask for some different eye drops or a spray?

mintmagnummm · 03/02/2019 11:29

Sallie yeah i guess it could be the weather, I didn't even think of that! My skin really playing up at mo too! Why is it that some people look great no matter the weather or time of month etc their skin just always looks good! I try to keep healthy, use good products etc and look like absolute shit 😏🙄

Sounds like winter skin Koko I’m oily/combo and am still very prone to dry, flaky patches at this time of year. I use Bioderma cicabio spf 50 in winter as it’s like a moisturiser rather than a sunscreen and is also suitable for sensitive skin.

www.bioderma.com/en/our-products/cicabio/spf-50

La Roche posay also do a cicaplast gel for peely skin that I find good

mintmagnummm · 03/02/2019 20:01

What am and pm moisturiser is everyone using at mo?

SallieSallow · 03/02/2019 21:51

Morning - cicabio spf 50 as mentioned above
Night - cerave sometimes in combination with the cicaplast gel also mentioned above

mintmagnummm · 04/02/2019 06:13

Thanks Sallie

RuggyPeg · 04/02/2019 07:16

I don't really use moisturiser much anymore. I use vitamin c, retinol, acids and sometimes Cerave - maybe once a week. My skin has never looked better.

I'm keeping on with the nuface (I've name changed). Still not really seeing any real improvement yet but I live in hope 🤞

I'm itching to buy the Neostrara retinol but I've got 3 lots of other retinol to get through yet - indeed labs, inkey list and QRXlabs, which is a fabulous brand btw. They have/had super strong peels but they're no longer allowed to be sold in UK 😠 Got my hands on one before they were pulled but I so wish I'd bought bottles of the stuff.

mintmagnummm · 04/02/2019 11:51

Anyone know any good barrier repairing moisturisers without niacinamide? I'm wondering if this ingredient is an irritant for me so need to stop my toleriane ultra overnight cream. I've got the original ultra fluid but think I need something more for pm

SallieSallow · 04/02/2019 14:24

I used this one last winter Mint and like it, I would carefully check the ingredients though. If you do decide to go ahead, I got a trial size on amazon for about £2 before I took the plunge but they don't seem to have them any more, might be worth trawling round a few other sites to see if you can find one.

mintmagnummm · 04/02/2019 15:39

Thank you Sallie I did try that one actually not so long ago but it didn't agree with my skin unfortunately. Thank you though x

Redandblue11 · 04/02/2019 17:41

Hello all, I am a newbie here. I have read (not all yet) of the past threads and info sheets compiled.
I wanted to ask if anyone has used / has any options on Dr Perricone products.
I have not gone the retinol route (yet) wanted to see any other anti-aging products.
Over 40, oily t zone rest ok. I always cleanse my face, serum moisturise morning and night. I used to only do sun protection in summer but after reading here I am doing it in winter too.
Thanks! Or if you have already discussed it pls let me know and I will try to find the info
X

Redandblue11 · 04/02/2019 17:42

Typo - not options but “opinions”

Christmastree43 · 04/02/2019 17:46

Hello all, I have sensitive skin with red undertones and I walk to work and back everyday and the cold weather is making my skin extra sensitive, dry and sore 😞

Could you recommend a heavy duty, sensitive moisturiser anyone?

I use Elizabeth Arden 8 hour original at night which is lovely but the moisturiser which I’ve tried for the day makes my skin itchy red and angry 😥

I love love love REN sensitive moisturiser for the summer but the intensive night cream does nothing for me

Thank you sooo much Smile

mintmagnummm · 04/02/2019 19:30

Has anyone ever tried the avene skin recovery cream moisturiser?

SallieSallow · 04/02/2019 19:54

Red I have seen dr perricone stuff on qvc but the price put me off so I’ve not researched or used them myself, not sure if anyone else here has. Qvc has the 30 day MBG so you’re covered if you have any irritation or sensitivity (or just don’t like it) but I don’t think 30 days is enough time to see if the products actually work or not.

Christmas are you using an spf, if not then I’d definitely get one into your routine as winter weather can be as harsh as summer sun. The Bioderma cicabio I linked above is a good moisturising spf 50 for sensitive or irritated skin.

Moisturisers I like are Cerave and FAB ultra repair as mentioned above. Eucerin 5% urea is a good one too. You could also try the la Roche posay pro-recovery gel also linked up thread as sounds like your skin needs healing.

Mint have you tried Eucerin 5%, I feel like you have but can’t remember. I haven’t used the Avene one.
