Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

SallieSallow I got the Ascorbic Acid 8% & Alpha Arbutin 2% as it seemed the best bet for brightening my skin and helping get rid of the red marks from spots

Outtheforest · 23/05/2019 16:19

I have ordered the PC BHA itll be arriving with our next shipment of various things we can't buy here, now to practice reapplying suncream often enough as I managed to burn my nose yesterday Blush
any other products I should try? I know about trying one thing at a time but easier for me to mass purchase. I'm getting on well with effaclar duo and my skin looked much better but sadly it hasn't stopped the monthly spot outbreak which also appeared yesterday.
Currently looking not so great with a burnt nose and chin and cheek spots.

SallieSallow · 23/05/2019 17:12

Cloud I'm not familiar with that one but seen on the Deciem site that it's in a glass bottle with a dropper so I'd definitely fridge it at this time of year. 8% is quite low for Vit C (15, 20 or 25% is the norm) but I don't know if combining it with the Alpha Arbutin makes it more potent. Even if not it's probably a good starter as Vit C can be irritating in the higher %s.

out what is your current routine? I don't think you should add anything else for now though until you've used the BHA for a few weeks and know you're ok with it as introducing too many new products at once is not a good idea. One thing you could/should get though is this for topping off your SPF during the day Grin

www.laroche-posay.co.uk/anthelios-invisible-fresh-mist-spf-50

Bioderma do a similar one that I really like but as you can get LRP easily where you are would probably be best to go for that one.

Tsmummy08 · 23/05/2019 21:36

I've been a bit slow to respond but have enjoyed all the P50 chat, thanks for the reassurance :) I'm still using it twice a week but have switched from tret to P&M retinoil as I felt my skin was getting a bit red and will go back to the hard stuff in September...

Open I also get less irritation with tret than with OTC retinols, except in the summer when my skin gets super sun-sensitive.

I'm also wondering whether I should try a BHA, even though my skin is dry because I seem to be getting larger pores and SFs as the years pass... would that be worth a go?

openupmyeagereyes · 23/05/2019 21:53

Something to look out for Tsmummy08, thank you.

I’ve been obsessing over spf, I’ve tried so many over the last few months. PC resist is the one I usually use but I’ve tried Dr Sam’s, Frezyderm (tinted), a couple from Neutrogena and goodness knows what else. None of them have been perfect, most of them, even though they’ve gone on ok, have been drying, highlighted fine lines and ended up in little patchy areas all over my face after a couple of hours. Most will get used for neck, arms and chest so not 100% wasted.

Outtheforest · 24/05/2019 06:21

sallie that mist looks interesting I could probably get it here also.
Current routine is very simple effaclar to wash morning and evening followed by the duo moisturizer which I switch out for moisture surge a couple of evenings a week. I have tried to double cleanse many times and my skin always hates it but maybe I just haven't found the right product.
Plan is to only add in bha currently but as I'm reliant on shipments which we do about 3 times a year I was wondering if I should purchase anything else in preparation

SallieSallow · 24/05/2019 08:56

out you could order a vitamin c (use in the morning on clean skin before moisturiser and spf) and a hyaluronic acid (use at night on clean skin before moisturiser). LRP have both of these in there range Mummybunny was talking about them a few pages back and wrote a review on the LRP vit c.

I use Timeless Vit c and Vichy mineral 89 HA and really like both, Vichy do a Vit c as well that some people here rate. If your big pharmacy has LRP it may carry Vichy as well, might be worth a look before you order from overseas.

TSmummy you could try using a BHA just on your congested areas rather than all over and maybe a weaker formula if you have dry skin. Not sure about using it in the same routine as P50 though that might be a bit much but the other P50 users will be able to confirm, I think JDSTER uses both but she has oily/combo skin.

botemp · 24/05/2019 10:19

I'm waiting out the summer too, I'm experiencing the same that Tret isn't all that irritating in comparison to standard Retinol. It's not even that drying, I've had to stop using a heavy moisturiser because it was becoming too rich and actually caused a (typical for me) product reaction. I'm not that convinced it's going to be a complete miserable summer though. The UV index has been really high lately, uncharacteristically so, low temps but definitely needed to be extra cautious with SPF for the last few weeks. Think I'll move onto 0.05% when the summer is over.

LadyEnid, hmm how does that work with the triple crown title? Is this just you frollicking at the seaside pretending to be one of the 'common' folk Wink Isn't collagen powder just gelatine powder? Or is it that baca(?) supplement thingy?

Cloud, the 8% Vit C and 2% arbutin is an anhydrous solution, which means it's stable but less likely to deliver the active ingredient as efficiently (at an already low % of Vit C) so no need to keep it in the fridge. You mention wanting to use it for red acne marks, is it PIH or PIE you're tackling? I'm not sure how effective it would really be (note the product mentions helps with appearance of, so it's not actually treating anything), Azeleic would be a better bet in my book.

Out, depending where you are, probably worth getting car (and potentially house) windows coated with UV film if not done so already. Are you wearing sunglasses a lot, probably making a nose sunburn happen quicker as movement of the nose bridge wears the protection away, and reflective lenses intensify exposure in that area. I'd be looking at a wide brimmed hat, there's one that's a fave on here that's shipped from Singapore but it's very much a beach holiday type thing. Effaclair range contains a form of BHA so you're already somewhat familiar with it. I would say go for Vit C next as it boosts the protection of your SPF, sounds like you could definitely use that.

Other non topical to consider, getting as much antioxidants into your diet helps protect from sun damage to a certain extent. Heliocare have a special supplement which I'd not recommend to most but if you're constantly burning up it may actually be of use to you.

Tsmummy, the more noticeable pores may just be sun damage related that are beginning to show with age now? Not sure how much you'd achieve with BHA over Tret but I suppose you can always try one of the Paula's Choice travel sizes, I've never found it all that drying but IIRC the age resist version has some additional hydrating ingredients. Or a high percentage peel may be worth considering?

Sallie how are u getting on with the nars tm?

Outtheforest · 24/05/2019 14:21

sallie we do have vichy actually we reliably have la Roche posay, vichy and neutrogena everything else supply is haphazard

botemp that is interesting thank you, the house is currently rented so probably can't film the windows but it's very shady anyhow. I do always have sunglasses on as I get a real headache without them. I generally don't get burnt anywhere but my nose so that could explain it. The issue this time was that I spend alot of time working outside at various sites and forgot to put the suncream in the car. Think I'll buy a second bottle and leave it in the glove box
Will do some reading about vit C

SallieSallow · 24/05/2019 15:00

Mint I absolutely love it and have ordered a second one just in case they discontinue it! Seems to be widely available on most sites though, I got mine on look fantastic. They offer a much better shade range than the IT cosmetics cc cream I’d been using and the one I got is a better match for me than IT. My skin tone and colouring are quite adaptable so the IT didn’t look bad but the NARS TM just looks that bit better/more natural.

out the Vichy Vit c is called LIFTACTIV VITAMIN C BRIGHTENING SKIN CORRECTOR and it definitely needs keeping in the fridge. Their hyaluronic acid is called Mineral 89.

mintmagnummm · 24/05/2019 16:13

Sallie that's great! I was in Debenhams today and asked lady at the nars counter if it was being discontinued and she said no definitely not! Phew 😅

botemp · 24/05/2019 16:27

out the Vichy Vitamin C goes under many names, depending on country. It's called the liftactiv antioxidant booster where I am but it looks like attached. Definitely keep it in the fridge.

Would warn about keeping SPF in the car, unless you have an air-conditioned glovebox that actually stays cool, it's probably best to keep a smaller travel size in your bag instead. Heat destabilises SPF and the protection goes down, chemical especially, but mineral is susceptible too.

SallieSallow · 24/05/2019 21:31

I forgot about it having different names Bo I think it was called liftactiv something else when I bought it so looks like it’s changed here recently, they might be trying to make it clearer that it’s a Vit C.

Mint that’s music to my ears about NARS TM, I’d be gutted if they discontinued it just as I’ve discovered it! How is your DP getting on finding a cleanser?

mintmagnummm · 25/05/2019 07:18

Sallie me too! It's Happened to me a few times now where something I love (which as you know is rare!) gets discontinued! I love the nars tm so am very pleased!

He bought the cerave foaming cleanser you mentioned and really likes it so far, he said it definitely feels better than the hydrating one. He's still using the lrp fluid with it for now. Thanks for asking x

mintmagnummm · 25/05/2019 07:19

I've made a few changes to my routine, I'll report back after a while....

SheStoodInTheStorm · 25/05/2019 07:30

Wonderful, knowledgable ladies in my phone! I still read the thread but have so much other stuff going on don't often keep up.

My LRP Toleriane Fluide moisturiser ran out yesterday and we go away on Monday. Nowhere stocks it near me and it won't get here in time. Are there any other decent moisturisers you might be able to recommenced I could buy in the interim from boots or Superdrug?

Thank you.

SallieSallow · 25/05/2019 09:13

Shestood Boots sell LRP not sure if the one I’ve linked is the right one though I don’t use it myself but know it comes in various guises/under different names now.

www.boots.com/la-roche-posay-toleriane-ultra-fluide-40ml-10189529

Boots also sell Cerave, I use and like this one
www.boots.com/cerave-facial-moisturising-lotion-52ml-10258275

Eucerin Urea 5% for face is another good one and most Boots should have it.

Superdrug carry a lot of moisturisers from their own ranges but I’ve never used any of them so don’t have any recommendations.

Glad your DP likes cerave Mint it’s a good choice for a man as doesn’t have that creamy texture but it’s not harsh/drying either.

botemp · 25/05/2019 09:37

Storm I was going to suggest the LRP Toleriane 'normal' sensitive one. Boots only seem to sell it in a kit though as far as I can tell:

www.boots.com/la-roche-posay/all-la-roche-posay-products/la-roche-posay-toleriane-sensitive-3-step-routine-kit-10259637

Otherwise the cerave mentioned above would be a decent one but it's not stocked widely online so I assume may be difficult to find in stores.

It's just released here so assuming it has in the UK by now too, Neutrogena hydroboost creme gel for sensitive skin (unfragranced). It says it's for dry skin but it's a bit of a wrong description as it's oil free.

Found a link:

www.boots.com/beauty/skincare/facial-skincare/moisturiser/neutrogena-hydro-boost-gel-cream-moisturiser-10216728

I think the moisturiser from the superdrug simply pure range is also meant to be decent and simple but iirc it contains mineral oil so may not suit everyone.

Thanks for the rec Sallie 👍🏻

EnidButton · 25/05/2019 10:05

Changed name back. The Lady but reminded me of those "hello ladies..." type troll posts. Still love Lady Button on Ghosts though, if you have iPlayer, it's worth a watch. Lighthearted and daft.

bo Apparently collagen powder comes in different types, it made sense when I read into it a bit but can't remember the proper terms now. I'll find it later.

EnidButton · 25/05/2019 10:05

I have Essie Watermelon coloured nails this weekend. It's officially Summer.

banivani · 25/05/2019 10:18

Bepanthen comes in 100g tunes now, so I bought that for my rash yesterday. Sexy.

A news site I look at keep recommending me an interview segment with a dermatologist who has written a skincare bible book (Swedish). Her message is think more about what you eat. Don’t over cleanse. Most stuff is useless. SPF not necessary when uv index is low. Layering skincare is prob not great.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 25/05/2019 12:52

Thank you - I'll have a look this afternoon! Wish LRP made their products a little more distinguishable. Toleriane Ultra broke me out last time, which is why I stick to the fluide. Not sure I'd use the other things in that set, but I'll take a look - thank you!
Just need something for the week, I'll order the usual online so it'll be here for when we're back!

SallieSallow · 25/05/2019 17:38

I think that’s why I’ve never got into the LRP toleriane moisturisers as I can never tell which one is which Confused
