Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Thankyou. I’m using the drunk elephant retinol that i mix with their Marula oil.

Thankyou for your feedback, it is much appreciated.

I think it works for me in that it doesn’t break me out and I’ve noticed a much more even skin tone and my skin generally feels more nourished. I also look a bit less grey, but that could be because I’ve recently stopped smoking, which I’m sure helps.

The pigmentation I think has appeared due to me never wearing makeup or sun cream and going abroad a lot, which is pretty bad I know, I usually hate the feel of sun cream on my face and I tend to end up with cystic breakouts if I use it.

I’m a bit confused about the glycolic thing, is it always present in the AhA items?

I do have a lot of drunk elephant stuff, but I didn’t want to stick to one brand as I’ve heard that isn’t a good thing to do.

I might try then :
DE beste jelly cleanser
DE c tango eye cream
DE c Firma Vit C serum
DE Protini moisturiser
Ultrasun

Pm:
DE beste jelly cleanser
DE PEEKEE bar
DE b hydra serum / Marula oil
DE Protini moisturiser
DE c tango eye cream

I do have the DE TLC Framboos which is a 12% aha serum, and also the retinol, so not sure whether to use the aha serum 3 times a week pm and the retinol twice a week?

Thankyou.

banivani · 07/06/2019 11:45

Sammi you can stick to one brand or use several whatever you want :) we're not that prescriptive on these threads. But we are ingredient focused and try to be economical as far as possible!

As far as I'm concerned, if your current routine is giving you the results you want, all is good. But as Bo said, some of the products contain some known irritants, so when you add your retinoin you need to be vigilant for negative changes. If you damage your skin barrier it can be a long way back (ask me how I know this).

Personally I wouldn't spend DE money on cleansers when for example Effaclar costs much less (even in US dollars it's only about 15) and does the job. :) But I am very very resentful of the fact that I'm not one of those people who can wipe some almond oil over my face and look radiant for ever. Wink

botemp · 07/06/2019 13:15

Sammi, Glycolic is an AHA but not all AHA products contain glycolic acid, it's just the name for a group of acids of which glycolic is one.

I think the TLC serum is tartaric, lactic and another acid, something with c probably, but check the ingredient list to be sure. % doesn't really tell us much without the pH as that will determine the free acids available and that determines whether something is very strong and likely to sensitise or not. Lactic tends to be a bit gentler due to its larger size.

As Bani has helpfully pointed out, no need to buy all DE unless you're a closet hoarder and already have all these products? I just pointed out DE above as that is the only brand you're currently using that excludes most common ingredients but it's not a brand I'd recommend to anyone at all as a bland brand to use alongside prescription or cosmeceutical actives. What drunk elephant is mostly good as is excluding the most common (but not all) irritants and silicones (which means layering products isn't problematic) whilst presenting active skincare as 'clean beauty'. It's more clever marketing with some very nice packaging.

Save your money where you can and if the things you're currently using aren't bothering use them up, get to know a bit more about actives as you seem to have an understanding of the broader picture but not so much of the intricacies and then replace with suitable alternatives as it runs out.

missmartini there’s another thread on here about rosacea that you might find useful, quite a bit of discussion about Soolantra and one poster had shared some before and after pictures

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/3605704-Rosacea-advice

Sammi I agree there’s no need to go all out and spend lots of money on DE cleansers if your current routine is working, I’d still ditch the morning cleanser that you’re wiping off with cotton wool pads though. I think you’d be better using your liz Earle with a flannel/cloth or just water and a flannel.

Glamglow Superglow mask has cleared up all of the sebaceous filaments from my nose. Obviously they'll come back so it has to be a once a week treatment thing but still amazed. I wouldn't use it elsewhere as it practically burnt off a spot I dabbed it on so my skin is too sensitive for it generally, and it's the most ridiculously priced thing I've ever come across, but the 15ml pot should last an age. My nose isn't that big. 👃🏻 So hopefully here ends the saga of my snout.

EnidButton · 07/06/2019 17:28

Oh it's Glamglow Supermud apparently.

banivani · 07/06/2019 18:11

Really? I’ve always been suspicious of glamglow because of the name and the hype - convinced it’s a big scam ;)

SallieSallow · 07/06/2019 18:18

Enid I had a small pot of glamglow supermud, I liked it on my snout too 🐽 though wasn’t keen on the ‘bits’ in it. But for me the Una Brennan clay mask and the Vichy one were just as good and did the same thing at a much lower price. But if your 🐽 is happy that’s the main thing Grin

EnidButton · 07/06/2019 19:49

Sallie Still love the Vichy one but this has really cleared it all away so will continue using both as they're needed. I wouldn't put the Glamglow on my spot prone chin. Yeah the bits are very unnecessary and odd.

Tant I thought so too! Instagram hype puts me off things. But tried a sample sachet of it and it performed a small miracle so I bought the little (tiny!) pot whilst I had a 20% off offer at Look Fantastic.

EnidButton · 07/06/2019 19:55

Did a full body scrub using Elemis Salt Glow tonight and god I love it. My skin feels very soft and looks really smooth now.

After my splurge this week, I've banned myself from anymore purchases until October. Apart from things like deodorant, razors and usual shampoo and conditioner etc. I have plenty of products to use.

PositivelyPeach · 08/06/2019 10:16

Just popped on to say I've seen that Boots are apparently discontinuing CYO make up.

I'm sure it was here that I saw it getting a lot of love. Hopefully there's an opportunity for people to stock up.

I still haven't forgiven Clinique for discontinuing Super moisture foundation without notice ☹️

SallieSallow · 08/06/2019 12:46

I need to impose a buying ban too Enid but need to go through my stash and take an inventory first, I’ve a terrible habit of buying stuff only to find I’ve already got it (or something very similar) in my stockpile Blush I also have things like that mandelic peel thing that I genuinely have no recollection of ever buying Shock

I’ve never used CYO Peach I had a look at the foundation in Boots none of the shades looked right for me - all the yellow toned ones were too dark. It’s only just launched hasn’t it, so strange it’s going already Confused CYO seem to have their own website so maybe they’ve decided to go online only, bit of a pain if you want to test shades though.

JDSTER · 08/06/2019 13:16

Enid I’ve often looked at glamglow supermud and wondered whether to buy it. I think I’ll give it a go, based on your assessment of it. I too would use on my nose for SFs. I’ve been using Alex Steiner from Primark mud mask. Ok but nothing special so I wouldn’t repurchase. Was it a small pot you got Enid?

I was reading today about Skinceuticals offering a bespoke serum. A detailed consultation and then they make your tailor made serum with potentially 100s of different combinations. Only one clinic in London offering this for the bargain price of £295. Sallie perhaps this would be a serum to knock our socks off? Wink

EnidButton · 08/06/2019 17:49

JD Yes the mini 15ml pot. It's the Supermud one meant for clearing blemish prone skin. Some reviews found it too much for their skin which is why I won't put it anywhere expect my nose. (I tried a sample sachet first, came with a Feel Unique order)

missmartini · 08/06/2019 18:20

Thank you all for your replies they really mean a lot.

I didn't actually hear about rosacea until a year ago and didn't realise it could be treated.

My routine just now is literally a face wipe and moisturiser. A supermarket brand facewipe and lush moisturiser Celestial it's called and that's only cause the girl in the shop pointed out the redness in my cheeks and said this might help. It was then I googled redness and discovered rosacea was a thing.

Thank you all so much for your kind words x

JDSTER · 08/06/2019 18:45
