Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

He might like cerave foaming, I think the hydrating one is probably a bit too rich/creamy for a man with oily/combo skin. And at least he’s moisturising Mint a lot of men I know don’t/won’t do anything other than wash and shave. Could you persuade him onto an spf moisturiser? Not as good as a proper standalone obviously but better than nothing!

mintmagnummm · 21/05/2019 07:50

Sallie thank you, any ideas of an spf moisturiser?

SallieSallow · 21/05/2019 14:29

Cerave does a day moisturiser with SPF25 and there's this one which is SPF 30
www.amazon.co.uk/Neutrogena-Triple-Protect-Advanced-Formula/dp/B0009KN8HS/ref=sr_1_3?s=gateway&keywords=spf+30+for+men&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1558445130&sr=8-3

And this one which sounds quite good as it's mattifying/shine control
www.lookfantastic.com/natio-for-men-oil-free-moisturiser-100g/10562411.html?affil=thggpsad&switchcurrency=GBP&shippingcountry=GB&shoppingpid=503169&thg_ppc_campaign=71700000047040822&adtype=pla&product_id=10562411&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIt7jfit2s4gIV7pztCh2w3AfnEAQYAiABEgItvPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

The bioderma cicabio SPF50 that I use in winter doesn't describe itself as a moisturiser but I treat it as one, I do find it a bit heavy for summer though so he might not like it. Though presumably he's not worried about putting makeup over the top Grin

mintmagnummm · 21/05/2019 15:53

Thanks so much Sallie x

Hello. Delurking to ask if anyone has used P50W with Tretinoin? I know BR advise against it but I think people still use peel strength acids alongside Tretinoin or RetinA. Does anyone know the strength of P50W?

Thanks.

banivani · 22/05/2019 09:28

Open I'm currently working my way through p50W, and I often use my Beauté Pacifique Clinical Super3 Booster (fucking mouthful) after. It's not retinol per se but vitamin A. (I didn't pay that frankly ridiculous price though, I bought with discount.) It's a solid product that I like, and my skin is fine with that.

I actually heard a podcast with the founder of Skincity who actively recommended the retinol after AHA route.

openupmyeagereyes · 22/05/2019 09:34

Thanks banivani. I wasn’t planning on using them together, more using P50W once or twice a week at night and the tret the other nights but BR doesn’t even seem to think this is ok. I ordered the P50W from Embassy after a couple of years of umming and ahing over it. I used it last night and then panicked and washed it off after a couple of hours Grin

openupmyeagereyes · 22/05/2019 09:37

Their own information says that the P50W is gentle.

banivani · 22/05/2019 09:38

I think you def need to be very mindful, esp if you're using proper tret. The risk of stressing the skin barrier is fairly considerable. Like I said upthread, I am noticing some signs of over-exfoliation or skin barrier stress sometimes while on the p50. I dial it back and then dial it up. In aeternam.

PositivelyPeach · 22/05/2019 09:47

Thank you Bo, Sallie, Tantric I've been having major issues getting onto any mumsnet threads recently. It keeps telling me I have no internet connection - but I do!

I've got a sample size of Dr Dennis Gross eyes so I'll definitely dig that out.

Sallie which Alpha H eye gel is it? There are a few on QVC at the moment in packs with Liquid gold (which I love - did wonders for my skin last year) so might bite the bullet. Do you rate Alpha H moisturiser? There are lots of bundle options.

Tantric I'm off to the body shop today to pick up the Elderflower eye gel, I've got a discount code. Any other recommendations - I haven't been into a body shop for 15 years Blush

SallieSallow · 22/05/2019 12:44

Peach this is the alpha h eye gel that I use, the duo I've linked below is good value as a single tube is £30ish on other websites, and you can return to QVC no questions asked within 30 days if you don't like/get on with it.

www.qvcuk.com/Alpha-H-Absolute-Eye-Complex-15ml-Duo.product.205018.html?sc=NAVLIST

I have bought a couple of Alpha H bundles/sets from QVC to get the eye gel as it worked out cheaper than buying elsewhere as a standalone but I'm not particularly keen on other Alpha H products, especially liquid gold which seems to make my skin worse somehow Confused I sometimes try to use them up on hands/body but quite often end up chucking them Blush I'll remember to offer up on here next time!

open I would be very wary using P50 (even the weak one) with tret, I think using it with an over the counter retinol/Vit A would probably be ok (and maybe what Skincity were referring to?) but tret is a level up from anything you can buy OTC. When I was using tret I had to completely ditch Paula's choice BHA (couldn't even use it once a week with a couple of days gap in between) as it made my skin horrendously peely/flakey.

The site is really playing up for me still too, keep getting Apache error codes when I try to post so just hoping this one makes it!

botemp · 22/05/2019 14:22

open, I use P50 (full strength not the W) and Tret on alternate nights 🙈 my derm did approve it though. It seems to work fine for me but I already used P50 for a long time so know the warning signs and I would say I took to P50 quite easily pre Tret. It's never really tingled for me until I used it the morning after Tret application on advice of my derm. In the past it was only if I used it daily that I felt it was too much. Still nothing horrendous happened, nor did it tingle, just some redness that I knew not to aggravate further.

When I've spoken to them about it in their Paris flagship spa they really hammer that you use P50 twice a day, daily. In no way would that work with Tret (or without) for me, but I'm fine on alternate nights and it does seem to minimise peeling and help with hydration as far as I can tell.

Should also add that I'm using a low dose and since I'm not using it to treat anything so I can apply it in the least aggressive way possible.

It sounds like I just need to tread very carefully then and see how it goes. I may try it weekly using damp cotton pads, follow up with cicaplast b5 and say a prayer! If my skin gets upset I’ll have to stop and go back to something more gentle. Of the two I’d prefer to keep using the Tret.

I’ve been using Tret for about two and a half months now, building up frequency very slowly. In the last week or so I started using it every night and I’m using 0.05 having started at 0.025. I’ve actually found it to be less irritating than most of the retinols I’ve used.

I’ve also started using the Verso eye serum again. I find it a bit stingy on application but one side effect is that it really makes my eyelashes grow. I noticed this morning that they are getting longer than usual and I noticed this when I used it before. I thought that it was because it contained caffeine (it smells like it does) but when I bought my latest bottle it didn’t seem to. It’s actually pretty good value too because while it’s pricey, at around £70, you get 30ml rather than the usual 15ml and you use a tiny amount. I’m yet to see any benefit beyond the eyelashes but I haven’t given it long enough previously.

SallieSallow · 22/05/2019 16:24

I need to get back on tret, I'm waiting to see what sort of summer we get though looks like it's going to be a typical British one rather than hot/sunny like last year Sad

YesQueen · 22/05/2019 16:29

My skin is looking SO much happier Grin
BHA seems to be the key for me

Peach I'm currently testing out Nivea Q10 Vit C eye cream which I like I guess as come to think of it I'm more than happy with my under eyes in the mornings. But the body shop actually tightens but no idea of the long term benefits.

YesQ BHA has always been the key for me, PC BHA 2% and facewash with BHA ie my beloved Murad clarifying.

cad186 · 22/05/2019 23:28

Yesqueen your skin looks amazing!

LadyEnidButton · 23/05/2019 01:30

Looking good Queen

Sallie I'm glad it won't be as hot, last Summer was hellish. My low blood pressure went through the floor, it was horrible. But I do hope it's sunny and warm for you and others who like it. Just not that relentless never ending heat.

LadyEnidButton · 23/05/2019 01:31

I've had a mini name change in honour of the BBC sitcom Ghosts. Grin

SallieSallow · 23/05/2019 10:50

Liking the new name LadyEnid or should we address you as your ladyship now Grin

I absolutely loved last summer but I'm an exceptionally cold blooded individual and it didn't seem all that warm to me especially up here in the north, it was just pleasant for me - and the first time in years I was able to wear summer clothes and sandals in this country.

YesQueen your skin is amazing! I wish I got those results with BHA, it does help keeping those annoying little whiteheads at bay but I don't get the 'wow' factor with it. But then again I don't actually get the 'wow' factor with anything Sad

cloud1183 · 23/05/2019 12:11

What a great thread! I have been on bc pill for many years to control acne and it’s done a really good job of it as my skin has been great. I’m 35 and have decided to come off the pill and have been following Caroline Hirons blog for advice. I’ve stopped having dairy and have altered my skincare regime and invested a lot more money in it. Since stopping the pill hormonal chin spots are cropping up again but nothing I can’t handle and I’m generally happy with how I’m doing without the pill as the last time I tried stopping it my skin went horrible

I’ve been using NeoStrata cleanser, which I love as it removes all the oil, which my face is generally covered in first thing in the morning but doesn’t leave my skin dry. I’ve also been using Kiehls oil free gel moisturiser and Murad skin perfecting lotion at night. Like I said, I’m pleasantly impressed with how my skin is doing. However, I have some redness on my chin where I get spots so got the ordinary vit c & Alpha Arbutin serum as I read that this will be good for reducing the redness. I’ve also read on here that vit c can go off quickly and needs to be stored in the fridge? Is this the case for the serum that I have ordered?

SallieSallow · 23/05/2019 12:30

which Vit C did you get cloud as if I remember correctly The Ordinary do a few and some are more shelf stable than others. I would suggest keeping it in the fridge though at this time of year as all Vit C can go off quite quickly.

La Roche Posay cicaplast is good for clearing/healing red marks or scars left from old spots if that's what you mean by redness on your chin.

mintmagnummm · 23/05/2019 14:23

I'm trialling neostrata sheer physical spf......

LadyEnidButton · 23/05/2019 14:34

Just Enid and a curtsy will be fine Sallie I'm up north too but just don't do very well in the humid heat.

DH's skin is better thanks to Eucerin 5% urea face cream. In fact it looks better than before. Like he accidentally gave himself a peel. Would not recommend though!

I'm trying out collagen peptides powder. Has various amino acids in it. Mainly for joint pain etc but it's supposed to be good for skin too so we'll see.

LadyEnidButton · 23/05/2019 14:35

That was a bit me me me sorry. Brain on a go slow today. Brew
