Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

@EnidButton £99 for two areas done by a lovely a&e doctor

64632K · 30/05/2019 21:19

I am hoping someone on here can help, I had a course of dermatude (micro needling) because I wrongly became obsessed with two lines across my forehead. My skin used to be normal, no issues. Now my forehead is always flaking and when I remove the flaking, it all red and bumpy. Can anyone recommend any lotions or potions?

SallieSallow · 30/05/2019 21:36

That’s a bargain YesQueen especially done by a doctor!

646 I use this for flaky/peely skin www.feelunique.com/p/La-Roche-Posay-Cicaplast-Pro-Recovery-Skincare-40ml

I don’t know anything about that treatment you’ve had though, is flaking a common side effect like it is with some retinols? If it’s an unusual reaction then you might be better off seeing a doctor or a dermatologist.

EnidButton · 30/05/2019 21:47

64 When did you have it done and what do you do to remove the flaking? Your skin could be having a sensitive reaction maybe.

Queen God that's good! Yeah, I'd def go to a doctor or nurse, not a beautician.

64632K · 30/05/2019 22:10

Thanks EnodButton and Sally, I had it well over a year ago, I understand it takes time for skin to shed and heal but its been too long so I think they bodged my skin up.

I have tried retinol, microdermabrasion, oxygen facials, AHA, BHA, exfoliators, acids, lots of moisturisers and serums.

TantricTwist · 30/05/2019 23:15

64632K they might have introduced bacteria / fungi to the area so see your GP and in the meantime try a dandruff shampoo on your face, in the flaky area. Sounds crazy but it can work.

EnidButton · 31/05/2019 02:45

64 A year is a long time. Too long for a post treatment reaction like I was thinking. I agree you might need to ask a GP. They tend to be a bit clueless skincare wise but you can ask for a referral to a dermatologist. Or find one yourself that takes nhs patients and ask a gp to do you a letter of referral to them. What's the flaking like? Is it sore? consistent all over or in patches? Must be really annoying. Especially when you were trying to improve your skin but make it worse. Flowers

EnidButton · 31/05/2019 02:45

but = not

64632K · 31/05/2019 08:40

Tantrictwist I tried anti dandruff shampoo too, made no difference sadly. I do think the treatment has done more damage than I realised.
EnidButton I thought it was eczema or psoriasis at first. Its not sore, there is a daily build up, removed in morning routine it returns gradually throughout the day. Once its removed the skin is red and bumpy. I may just have to go see my GP for a referral I think.

SallieSallow · 31/05/2019 17:47

64 it does seem to have done some quite bad damage to your skin Sad did the salon/therapist warn you about side effects or do any test patches? I think you definitely need to see a derm, paying privately is probably the best/quickest way if you can afford it but if not then try via the GP, I’d really lay on it thick with them how bad it is as some can be dismissive about skin issues.

Depending on what the GP or derm say I’d also be inclined to put in a complaint to the salon and possibly take to social media to warn others especially if it could have been caused by lack of care or poor hygiene on their part.

EnidButton · 01/06/2019 16:55

Bit off topic but I know we talked a little bit about cycle tracking apps and I was using Clue. Well just started using one called Moody and it's really good. Much better than the other own which is good for just tracking periods etc but this one covers mood changes, skin, sleep and whatever else you want to add. Gives tips for how you might be feeling at various times of the month too which I'm finding really helpful. Anyway, if anyone wanted to try that kind of app, Moody is a good one. It's made me have a self care day today instead of forcing myself through household chores. Smile

TantricTwist · 01/06/2019 17:46

Enid I'm having a self care day incl exercise and an acid peel followed by a decent routine. My skin looks saggy, blotchy and grey at the moment, not helped by having to stare right at my face during FaceTime video calls Shock

EnidButton · 01/06/2019 21:11

No-one looks good on those though Tant Not unless you do a full face of fresh make up and use a ring light. 💗 The rest sounds good, especially the exercise.
My self care involved a nice hot bath (it's cloudy and raining here. Not at all hot.), a hand scrub, faffing with a couple of face masks but also being kinder to myself and relaxing without worrying about what 'needs' to be done.

I tested a Glamglow mask earlier. Just on the ol' snout 👃🏻 The Supermud clearing one. Smells really good, like the outdoors or, possibly, like mud. 🤔 When it dries it's slightly horrifying to see all the oil dots emerge but I guess it shows it's doing what it says it will. Nose smoother and quite matte looking after removal. Think I prefer my usual Vichy grey clay mask but we'll see if it makes any difference longer term after a few uses. Contains acids that my skin hates so fingers crossed it's fine.

MerryMarigold · 02/06/2019 06:52

I don't wear sunscreen!! I can react to it (sensitive) and feels greasy on me. Can anyone recommend a good face sunscreen? I've read the articles linked on here, but with just ingredients it's going to take me a long time to find one. I'd like a recommendation of something light as possible but more of a physical rather than chemical barrier as I think I also have a skin barrier problem (physical barrier recommended). Thank you in advance!

64632K · 02/06/2019 10:05

SallieSallow thank you, yes I fear they have done something so a dermatologist it is then. Will look for a private one. I guess after all the expenditure on various lotions and potions with no effect should have told me so.

SallieSallow · 02/06/2019 11:29

Good luck 64 I hope the derm sorts it out for you.

Marigold I’m using frezyderm spf 50 at the moment which is quite primer like so definitely not greasy but some people do find it irritating especially round the eyes. I use this Bioderma one in winter which is aimed at sensitive skin but you’d have to research the ingredients.

www.bioderma.com/en/our-products/cicabio/spf-50
I don’t like physical spfs as they used to leave a white cast on me but haven’t tried one recently so there might be better ones out there now. I think they’re more popular in the US so worth looking at US brands that are sold in the U.K. or you can get on amazon.

64632K · 02/06/2019 12:03

I second Frezyderm, I love its mattifying effect too. I have also heard some find it irritating around the eyes. I did use dermologica but that irritated my eyes but my SIL swears by it. Agree with SallieSallow re the physical ones and white film although Drunken Elephant is quite good. I also love my Soleil Toujour.

TantricTwist · 02/06/2019 12:19

I really like Frezyderm too.

My skin looks so much better today thank god. I need to keep up with the acids and use more AHA as opposed to just BHA.

Luckily I have an unopened mini Liquid Gold standing by for this very moment, yay.

SallieSallow · 02/06/2019 13:30

I’ve just seen Clinique do a mineral spf which has got good reviews for not being greasy or leaving a white cast
www.lookfantastic.com/clinique-mineral-sunscreen-fluid-for-face-spf50-30ml/11267594.html

Tant I’m wondering about trying a combined AHA/BHA, notice Cosrx do one but not sure how potent it is. Their BHA seems weaker than the Paula’s choice one but it means I can use it more frequently which might be better in the long run.

Does anyone have experience with mandelic acid? I’ve found a mini mandelic acid peel kit in my stash (no recollection of buying it Blush) but don’t want to end up with the dreaded flaking.

MerryMarigold · 02/06/2019 20:13

Ooh thank you so much. My birthday present will be Clinique!!

TantricTwist · 03/06/2019 17:43

My Rodial acid peel is combined acids and it's fairly potent but it gets washed off after 10-15mins.

I cracked open the Liquid Gold today so will continue using it till it runs out which will be a while at 3 times a week.

SallieSallow · 03/06/2019 19:32

I hope it’s ok Marigold as I’ve no experience of it but seems to have good reviews.

Tant the mandelic peel I’ve got is a once a week treatment that you leave on for 5 mins then wash off and says it’s for skin brightening. I’ll give it a try and see how I get on.

TantricTwist · 03/06/2019 19:39

I know nothing about mandelic acid sallie so be interesting to see how you get on. Well we hope Smile

SallieSallow · 03/06/2019 21:03

The deed is done! didn’t sting or tingle at all when it was on & seems milder than the Paula’s choice BHA so hopefully I won’t be on here crying tomorrow about my face falling off Grin

TantricTwist · 03/06/2019 22:45

I've got mild red pimples on my cheeks going on which as far as I remember is what happened last time I used LG. Which I think is the purging phase eek. We'll see tomorrow morning.
