Not meant in the spirit of nastiness or taste-bashing but, I don't get why people get even vaguely hot under the collar about...

Coldplay
REM
U2
Pink Floyd
Belle & Sebastian

(oh and Genesis, but shurely no-one likes them anyway )

What are your enigmatic over-raters?

Zippi
Then close your eyes and don't read the next line.

I had no idea who Belle and Sebastian were until I read this thread. I had to google.

I have listened to some of the songs on youtube, but none of them are remotely familiar.

billysitch · 03/06/2008 18:43

I suspect that Belle and Sebastian have not made it over to this side of the Channel yet, we are often a couple of years behind UK

Had a listen on youtube, not bad. Might have a look for the cd next time I am over

i have the green fields of forever land the gentle waves and it is pretty crap

aDad · 04/06/2008 09:10

On the great Belle and Sebastian debate - nope, I can't see their greatness in the slightest.

MB - I wasn't 'there' for the Stones either but their early music really does do something for me.
The Beatles were a phenomenon and DP puts on that Beatles 1 album quite often and it's true the progression of styles is quite astonishing and I do understand their greatness, but so little of it moves me at all.

aDad · 04/06/2008 09:11

Doesn't seem like anyone here is going to be rushing to get the new Coldplay material when they release it!

Blandmum · 04/06/2008 09:15

I forgive you anyway!

I was 'there' because my brother is 9 years older than me, so while I was only 6 or 7 when Sargent Pepper cam out, I remember the day because my brother took me away from watching Play School to go and pick it up on the day it was released! And I remember the arguments that rant about the Beatles hair being too long and when my cousin started to listen to the Stones, you'd have thought the world had stopped turning the fuss the family made!

And that is the difference. My dd like Mika and while I think he is crap, it isn't that big a difference. Wheras my parents like Jo Loss and Mantovani. Mark Steel says that growing up in the 60ws and 70s was like be raised by a pack of wolves! The difference between the generations was so great. And the Beatles and the Stones were all part of that!

aDad · 04/06/2008 09:23

Yes, I can see that.

I think my elder brother liking the Beatles and playing them a lot when we were children is a reason for my NOT liking it. I think it was at a time when we were fighting mostly!

talilac · 04/06/2008 10:02

aDad - re Belle & Sebastian.. yes but you don't like The Divine Comedy who are also great, so I reckon you may have a blind spot when it comes to literate indie pop..

Ecmo · 04/06/2008 10:12

Level 42
Lever 42
Level 42
Level 42
Level 42

they don't/didn't (are they still going?) even sing they just spoke in a monotone with background noise!

zippitippitoes · 04/06/2008 10:17

i went to see a hard days night at the pictures [sic] when it first came out with my mum we queued aroudn the block and everyone stood up screaming all the way through it

i was about 5 or 6

aDad · 04/06/2008 10:30

talilac, well you may be right there, and that is what this thread is about: 'failing to understand the greatness of bands' and I certainly fail to get either of those bands despite them being rated by many a listener, similar to Beck.
Have seen B&S and Beck live too and been unmoved.

It would be dull if we were all the same though!

GooseyLoosey · 04/06/2008 10:36

Have no great feelings on Belle & Sebastian one way or the other. They are OK, but I can see nothing great about them. I love U2 (at least all of their albums up to and including the Joshua Tree, but they should have retired then).

The ones I can't get are:

  1. Led Zeppelin - which is unfortunate as dh swears that they are great. I get a headache whenever he plays them as to be it is just discordant noise for the most part
  2. Snow Patrol - wake me up when its over type music (same with Athlete)
  3. Pink Floyd - I have tried but the genius of it escapes me
  4. Joy Division - Love will tear us apart was the only high point in an otherwise pretty rubbish collection of songs
  5. Radiohead
CountessDracula · 04/06/2008 10:38

U2 is the top one
they are dreadful and a bunch of wankers to boot

Travis
Coldplay
The one with that fat blond bloke who is a coke fiend
Sting

CountessDracula · 04/06/2008 10:38

oh keane
that is fat bloke one

francagoestohollywood · 04/06/2008 10:42

pink floyd
U2
dire straits
I'd say coldplay, but I think I've only ever heard one excruciating song
any one with sexy videos
