What do you think of the Iris and Peter Robinson Affair

DuelingFanjo · 07/01/2010 14:13

tell me about them? I don't know much

story

clicky for his statement

I don't know, I find him a bit odd. I can't imagine she is/was that happy in the relationship if she had an affair. I wonder if her affair was all her fault? He doesn't sound like he's forgiven her in his statement.

Is it all such a big deal because of their moral views?

How dreadful Petisa, the story about trying to get you to throw away your records.

I had a bf from NI many moons ago and visited regulalry so always interested.

They make my skin crawl.

TakeLovingChances · 08/01/2010 13:27

I have been born and bred in NI, still live here. Was brought up in a DUP voting household, although now that I'm older that isn't really my personal viewpoint.

I agree with posters previous to me who say that most people in NI vote for the 'type' of party it is, rather than having a baldy clue what their manifesto is.

I do think that Iris made a rod for her own back by trying to be a 'model' Christian, and a model wife in politics. But at the same time, she is just as weak and given to temptation as anyone else.

I wonder if it would have been different if P Robinson had the affair, or another male? Part of me thinks the main scandal is her gender.

Nothing surprises me in NI politics, and I do think out of all the past or potential NI political issues, this one isn't that huge.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2010 14:06

I don't think its her gender at all. I think its her hypocrisy that makes it such a scandal. She was always pointing her finger at others wrongdoing (wrongdoing in her bigoted brain anyway).

BristolIrishGirl · 08/01/2010 14:18

It couldn't have happened to a nicer couple!!!

Delighted to hear all about it.

I haven't lived in NI for the last 11 years but all my family are still there. I live in Bristol now but am originally from a tiny village outside of Derry.

moondog · 08/01/2010 14:19

I'm still not clear on who she was shagging. A 19 year old or was he the son of person?

The holier than thou brigade have soooooo far to fall when they do.I have a politician friend. He says it is startling how many stupid untalented people get in (reinforced of course by generally encouraged notion that politics is boring and irrelevant).Leaves the door wide open for fools like her.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2010 14:21

He wasmthe son of a friend of hers. When her friend passed away she started consoling Kirk.

I'm also shocked at Kirk. We go to the Lockeepers in every weekend after our walk and he seems like such a lovely sensible guy.

bubble2bubble · 08/01/2010 14:23

Agree paula. The hypocrisy leaves you speechless. Set themsleves up as an example of the model family when everyone knows they've been milking the system for every penny.

I strongly suspect that this is just a small part of the story and there will be more to come. I mean, cheques for £25000 to Iris from property developers for which nothing was expected in return? yeah right.

Sits back grinning gleefully from my comfy chair in rural NI

moondog · 08/01/2010 14:27

So Paula, are you saying she was indeed shagging 19 year old?

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2010 14:28

Well he is 22 now but he was 19 when the affair started.

moondog · 08/01/2010 14:55

Blimey.
Silly cow.
The smugness oozing from that picture of her tittering with head thrown back by her dh is palpable.

Not so smug now eh Iris?

petisa · 08/01/2010 15:00

Yabu, I?m visiting Belfast soon and I want dd to be able to play in the lovely snow! We don?t have any where we live. On second thoughts, it makes travelling a nightmare, so yanbu? Oh I don?t know whether I want snow or not, I love the idea of sledging and making snowmen, but the reality is being freezing cold and scared in the car?

Have you seen this thread about said juicy scandal?

petisa · 08/01/2010 15:00

Ooops wrong thread

PlumBumMum · 08/01/2010 15:08

But not only the affair, I wish I had a couple of friends who would give me 25000 each if I asked for it?

I think the next few days will be interesting, and I don't think its a gender thing, I think its because she took such a moral high ground

Tee2072 · 08/01/2010 15:08

I am an American Expat living in Belfast and will admit I understand very little about NI politics, even after 6 years.

However, I was appalled at her stance on gays last year and I am chortling with glee at her fall.

I am not sure which part I am enjoying more...his being 19...her giving him huge amounts of money...or the First Minister's 'tearful' presentation on UTV.

How the mighty and righteous have fallen.

beckie222 · 08/01/2010 15:24

Born and bred here in NI and i have always said that most things now in politics always boils down to money which this scandal just proves.

pagwatch · 08/01/2010 15:34

oh thank god I found this thread. No one in rl is really interested but when I heard the extracts from the 'personal statements' it just seemed sooo obvious thatthere was more going on - a desperate 'poor us and our private tragedy' seemed like such an obvious attempt to provoke sympathy and deflect something.
The financial misdealings and the 19 year old lover are obviously the bits they were trying to deflect.

Really really funny.

If you are going to be a gung ho, broke no arguement, God loves me and hates everyone else bigot then you just have to shag 19 year olds and break the law to set them up and then try and conceal it.
Classic

Tee2072 · 08/01/2010 15:39

pagwatch it couldn't be more perfect if it was a storyline on a soap!

moondog · 08/01/2010 15:43

I'm interested!
Gripped in fact!
Can't work out why t isn't huge.Has it all-greed,sex,bigotry,nepotism.

megapixels · 08/01/2010 15:49

She sounds revolting. I don't get it though. As I understand it, this wasn't exposed by the media but something that the Robinsons themselves brought up. Why?

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 08/01/2010 15:49

i was hoping she had an affair with a lesbian republician

petisa · 08/01/2010 15:57

For those of you who didn't see Spotlight here's a really interesting clip of it I found on youtube.

He is really cute to be fair! The other guy being interviewed is a man the Robinsons' hired as a political assistant (paid for with public money) who got fed up with being involved in the shenanegans (sp?) and sorting out their personal problems and goes to the bbc to spill the beans.

Apparently the affair went sour and she demanded the money she lent him back, and there's something about money going to a church run by Peter Robinson's sister, 1000 a month out of the business profits.

And it turns out the developer who gave her the money for her young lover had been getting contracts through the council thanks to Iris, and none of the above was declared.

Peter finds out about it all, shites himself and plans cover up.

petisa · 08/01/2010 16:00

Really Paula? you must be shocked. What a lovely part of the world that is btw.

TennisFan · 08/01/2010 16:05

It has made my Friday anyway listening to the news and the whole story. The Robinsons are vile, and deserve everything coming to them.

moondog · 08/01/2010 16:16

Blimey, that link is interesting.
And she clawed money back from the lad for herself after procuring it.
(Did he break the story?)

LadyBiscuit · 08/01/2010 16:40

Have a listen to the Today piece on this I heard earlier. I had never heard of the Robinsons before this - my hand froze in the air with a spoonful of cereal on it because it is such a soap opera
