What do you think of the Iris and Peter Robinson Affair

DuelingFanjo · 07/01/2010 14:13

tell me about them? I don't know much

story

clicky for his statement

I don't know, I find him a bit odd. I can't imagine she is/was that happy in the relationship if she had an affair. I wonder if her affair was all her fault? He doesn't sound like he's forgiven her in his statement.

Is it all such a big deal because of their moral views?

I don?t live in my home province of Northern Ireland now, but I do know that a lot of people absolutely despise Iris Robinson because of her extremely right-wing views, her religious fundamentalism and her bigoted opinions on homosexuality. Last year she caused outrage by stating that she thought homosexuality was an ?abomination?. She prattled on about her fab psychiatrist friend who ?cures? gay people, and also has said: "just as a murderer can be redeemed by the blood of Christ, so can a homosexual? and ?There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality and sodomy, than sexually abusing young children.?

Can you believe that?? From an elected UK MP??

The Robinsons have also been criticised for many of their policies (I don?t know much in detail, now that I live abroad), but they seem to not give a fuck about the environment or conserving lovely old buildings in Belfast for a start, and then there's their hefty expense accounts and lavish lifestyle. And people vote for them? I dispair..

I can't stand the sight of either of them and to hear about this affair has really made my day.

pispirispisloveschristmas · 07/01/2010 16:13

Here's a good article apart from the part about Iris being a victim. She's not. She has held a lot of power and influence and has abused that, because she is a greedy, hypocritical, bigoted loon.

mathanxiety · 07/01/2010 16:19

People vote for candidates in NI for reasons that are a bit different from the factors voters take into account elsewhere, unfortunately.

Sorry for him and the family, even though I would never vote for him for the reasons mentioned by Pispirispis and then some more. I think it's horrible for politicians or their spouses (or anyone else for that matter) to issue public apologies to injured parties in a case like this.

As for somehow blaming him for the affair, this is not really fair. I would be inclined to believe all the right wing fundamentalist bible thumping is a front for someone who is actually roiling underneath the surface, leading a very different private life from the kind of life she thinks others should have.

paulaplumpbottom · 07/01/2010 16:20

I think she is such a hypocrite. After she spent all that time banging on about the evils of homosexuality and how they should all be turned. She is a vile person. It doesn't suprise me though, usually the people who are the most judgemental are the people who have the most skeletons.

pispirispisloveschristmas · 07/01/2010 16:51

Yes, it?s true, people vote for them to maintain a majority over ?Catholic? parties such as Sinn Fein and the SDLP. Because they believe in Northern Ireland remaining a part of the UK. People in the past, when I lived at home, suggested to me that I shouldn?t vote for the Green Party or the Women?s Party (which I always did) because my vote was a waste and should go to making Protestant representation in my community as large as possible. The people suggesting this had no idea about any of the party's actual policies.

pispirispisloveschristmas · 07/01/2010 16:51

Tsk - parties'

paulaplumpbottom · 07/01/2010 21:33

Oh dear,

Is it true he was only 19!!!!

moondog · 07/01/2010 21:36

Despicable greedy greedy bigoted monsters. They employ four family members between them.

And now that she has been exposed she plays the old depression/mental strain card.

Useless miserable woman.
A disgrace to her sex.

TinyPawz · 07/01/2010 22:25

Oh how I laughed.....couldn't have happened to a nicer fella!!!!

petisa · 07/01/2010 22:30

yes, that's right moondog, I'd forgotten about the family member employees. (Am pispirispis, have name changed) I totally agree with your description of them. It's a disgrace they get away with it all.

Link, Paula, link! Another thing I'd meant to add is that people in Norn Iron won't be one bit surprised about this, although they'll enjoy taking the piss. It's commonplace for important members of Protestant churches (especially the more obscure denominations) to turn out to be having affairs. I remember the married minister of a little church in the middle of nowhere I went to when I was a teenager (great way to get a boyfriend when you're 14 btw) turned out to be having/have had an affair with 3 of the most devout women in the congregation. They used to tell us to thow away all the rock music in the house as it contained satanic messages. Mum would ave really appreciated me throwing away her Beach Boys LPs

TinyPawz · 07/01/2010 22:33

19yr!!!

TinyPawz · 07/01/2010 22:34

Not a kick in the arse off jailbait.....

petisa · 07/01/2010 22:36

Lol TinyPawz!

My family will doubtlessly be shaking their heads and saying that she's "not wise anyway". (i.e. she is a loon)

Actually, must tune into Stephen Nolan tomorrow on Radio Ulster tomorrow to hear what everyone makes of it!

petisa · 07/01/2010 22:44

Apparently Spotlight (on now) is taking about it all. Will see if I can get it on youtube tomorrow.

TinyPawz · 07/01/2010 22:46

petisa....I'm from Belfast but live on 'the other side of the fence'. I am finding the whole thing a right ole laugh.

petisa · 07/01/2010 22:58

It's nice to "meet" other mners from Norn Iron! I'm originally a culchie (sp?!), I was a student in Belfast, love the place and go back regularly to visit friends, but have lived in other countries since I was 21.

It's priceless, isn't it?! It has made me laugh so much I was afraid of waking dd. There'll be plenty of smirks and belly laughs over this one on both sides. And no fucking sympathy from anyone, unless they're fucking dim, frankly (i.e. a DUP supporter).

shoofly · 07/01/2010 23:34

love it - Great BBC Spotlight programme tonight - although the thing that made my dh laugh most of all was the way our phone rang immediately the credits rolled with my mother ringing to say "Can ye believe the cheek of your woman- sure it was practically paedophelia (?sp?) she was involved in!!"

veryconfusedandupset · 08/01/2010 09:18

a 19 year old and it is being reported that she has broken financial rules to "help" him - ever likely she is playing the insanity card! what other world do politicians live in?

noddyholder · 08/01/2010 09:22

I was brought up there and can believe the furore it has caused

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 08/01/2010 09:26

mr r. has been elevated from the position of cunt to poor cunt. but he only broke the news to save his skin over a financial scandal. i am from ni and i still can't get over the fact that it's elected leaders are nasty, greedy bigoted, murdererous, homophobic fools.

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 08/01/2010 09:27

shite its not it's

Rindercella · 08/01/2010 09:32

I know nothing of NI politics, but when I saw this on the news a couple of nights ago, I just thought, why? Why are they making this public? And why is it news? Reading this thread, I am a little clearer about the reasons why I think.

Ugh. Seedy & horrible.

DuelingFanjo · 08/01/2010 11:03

Seems there's a lot of stuff to come out. Someone on Jeremy Vine yesterday was saying that there may be reasons for her stand over Homosexuality which will be revealed soon. Wonder what?

OP posts:
LadyBiscuit · 08/01/2010 11:05

I heard this story on Today this morning and was gobsmacked - a truly seedy scandal. Details here.

And then a friend of mine from NI sent me the text of her speech from the summer - I don't think I've ever read anything so completely vile. What a hypocritical nasty old bigot. I hope her and her husband are kicked out - no one deserves people like that representing them.

charitygirl · 08/01/2010 11:09

I'm a compassionate person...but Iris Robinson and her husband certainly aren't so I have no reservations saying 'hahahahaha' - what goes around, comes around, you hypocritical, hate-filled god-botherer.
