What do you think of the Iris and Peter Robinson Affair

DuelingFanjo · 07/01/2010 14:13

tell me about them? I don't know much

story

clicky for his statement

I don't know, I find him a bit odd. I can't imagine she is/was that happy in the relationship if she had an affair. I wonder if her affair was all her fault? He doesn't sound like he's forgiven her in his statement.

Is it all such a big deal because of their moral views?

think it's all made up/publicity stunt

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2010 20:25

No I can't but its not infidelity

Tee2072 · 08/01/2010 20:25

A publicity stunt that could very well get them both thrown out of office? I hardly think so.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2010 20:25

No I can't but its not infidelity

DuelingFanjo · 08/01/2010 20:26

is it homosexuality?
now that would be a good story - if her husband was gay!

PlumBumMum · 08/01/2010 20:27

Not likely scotland the First Minster might lose his job, very bad publicity stunt

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2010 20:27

Oh god no,I wishh that would be priceless

PlumBumMum · 08/01/2010 20:28

I think my screen might be on freeze I hit post and suddenly there were 10 more, didn't take me that long to type

bubble2bubble · 08/01/2010 20:28

ooh I would love it if he was gay!
don't think so though, and that has never been the rumour

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/01/2010 20:34

Lol at this thread.

When I saw this the other day I thought oh what a shame, horrible to have your dirty linen aired in public, feeling sorry for them etc (never had heard of the pair before).

Then I found out the more Shameless style aspects of the story and saw the undisguised glee on this thread, and I'm chortling away at the whole story now.

bubble2bubble · 08/01/2010 20:45

When you have grown up with people like this you just can't desguise the glee.
I went to school with people who thought you would go to hell for watching TV on a Sunday, never mind being gay or having an adulterous affair with a 19 year old...

mathanxiety · 08/01/2010 20:54

bubble2bubble, very funny because it's also very sad and true. I grew up in the other theocracy on the island, course a lot more relaxed about sunday, but I always thought the real religious zealots on both sides had a lot more in common than they would ever admit (not so much the political ones).

bubble2bubble · 08/01/2010 20:57

totally agree Mathanxiety
Better not hijack the thread with comments on paedophile priests though?

For some reason (naive) I thought politics in NI would have improved in recent times. It sounds completely shit shaped.

DuelingFanjo · 08/01/2010 21:05

the Robinsons are protestants, right?

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 08/01/2010 21:05

Very naive, Getorfmoiland. I've been here 6 years, I think NI Parliament has been back in session about 2 years. And its been about 2 years of the same old same old, so far as I can tell.

IrisRobinsonsPsychiatrist · 08/01/2010 21:06

She is the Ulster Imelda Marcus.

Apparently last year, the Robinsons claimed almost 550k in salaries and allowances, with Iris 'triple jobbing' - ie councillor, MLA & MP. Wikipedia claim they are known as Swish family Robinson .

My experience of Iris Robinson is that she always abused her power. I have a friend whose neighbour boasted that my friend would never get planning permission, because the neighbour 'was a personal friend of Iris Robinson, and she would make sure it didn't go through'. Strangely, he never got the planning, even though it was completely uncontroversial. I have heard the same story many times over.

She has also completely abused her position of trust with the young boy. If it had been the other way round, with a 59 year old man grooming a relationship with a young girl who had just lost a parent, he would be {rightly] accused of grooming.

I feel dreadful for this boy's family. His mother must be devastated.

PlumBumMum · 08/01/2010 21:13

Yeap duelingfanjo

bubble2bubble · 08/01/2010 21:16

that would be Protestants - the capital letter is important

petisa · 08/01/2010 21:52

me too bubble2bubble (went to school with people like that) and knew plenty of smugtastic golf club women similar in many ways to Iris.

yes DuelingFanjo, and their party is the DUP, which used to be led by Ian Paisley.

logged on to radio 5 (thanks mrsdennisleary) but Stephen Nolan's show as been cancelled "due to rights restrictions".

Ronaldinhio · 08/01/2010 21:52

oohh Ronaldinhio never thought of that one, or maybe her?

Ronaldinhio · 08/01/2010 22:17

there are those of course who view Paisley as a visionary and Robinson as a grave step backward
