What exercise 'achievement' perked you up recently?

Mine was on Saturday when I went out for a road cycle - hadn't realised it was quite so windy and it was against me for the first 15 miles or so - had been up several decent hills and was about 5 miles from home going along a flat, straight road which is fairly exposed. Reader, it may have been slightly wind assisted but my speedometer reached 30.3mph!!!!! On the flat!!! For a couple of hundred yards!!.
Managed to sustain at over 29mph for several hundred yards! I was SO pleased with myself.

Anyone else got an exercise achievement they want to brag about? Grin

I went for a run last weekend and my main aim was to actually get off my arse and go to enjoy the beautiful weather, and getting off road, as I mostly run in the dark at this time of year, but it felt good so I picked up speed in places, and I got a strava crown.

Icantbelieveitsnotnutter · 05/02/2022 11:03

I have developed arthritis and am obese. My knees and ankles were painful even to stand but I made myself walk our hyper dog every day. Even injured, I had to do it even when my knee cap popped out of position! Since joining the local gym about 6 weeks ago attempting a fun aerobics class once a week, I now also do other classes and half hour bursts of swimming each week with the aim of introducing even more exercise soon. Of course I still walk our dog but they are less painful now. I really feel like my fitness and flexibility is already going back to how it was around 5 years ago!

LaChanticleer · 05/02/2022 11:22

You’re becoming addicted @Icantbelieveitsnotnutter Grin walking with your knee popped out is true dedication. Makes me feel like a lightweight.

Before you know it, you’ll be running/walking a marathon!

Exercise always makes me feel better, even if I don’t do more than a half hour of stretching.

JoyfulDay · 05/02/2022 11:45

I had planned a run this morning. I am v v slow (think 7.5 mins per km) and I had a planned cafe stop mid run. Except I missed the turn in the park to the cafe and ended up needing to run up a massive hill to get back on track and lots of cyclists were going up it and I was too embarrassed to stop running Confused even though I was dying on my feet and I ended up running 7km instead of 5km which is the furthest I have ever run :)

RishiRich · 05/02/2022 11:55

I've been going to a new Spin class with an instructor who like everyone to stand up a lot. This Thursday I managed the whole long climb track (12 minutes) without sitting down once.

Sidge · 05/02/2022 12:02

I switch to rowing and ski erg machine occasionally but the assault bike is my most hated gym equipment!

Me too 😂 I’d rather spend an hour on the treadmill than 5 minutes on the assault bike!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/02/2022 12:24

I went to a 50 m pool instead of a 25 metre one. It feels longer when you don't get to push off the wall as much! I did the same distance as usual though (or maybe 100 metres more, I think I lost count at one point!).

This is brilliant! 😂 I’m the same in that fear of shame keeps me running further (or slightly faster). Well done!
ExtremelyDelighted · 05/02/2022 12:36

I have slacked off over the winter (lots of coughs and colds) but went to three yoga classes last week and ran once (about to go out again). Back to the gym next week.

LaChanticleer · 05/02/2022 13:27

With you on the assault bike hatred @sidge and @Stellaris22. It’s the devils bike basically. I quite like the ski erg - my PT makes me do things like 20 calories on it, with a run around the gym car park in between each 20 cals . It’s bearable, whereas the assault bike is just … ugh, grind.

Sidge · 05/02/2022 13:32

@LaChanticleer I like the ski machine - once I’ve got my rhythm I find it quite fun and like racking up some mileage. It’s fab for my shoulders and if you squat too it’s a full body exercise! My PT gets me doing stupid HIIT things like 250m ski then goblet squats then pushups then weighted lunges then another 250m and repeat and repeat and repeat and then die…

Kudos to all you exercise bunnies - it’s so lovely to share the joy!

LaChanticleer · 05/02/2022 16:10

@Sidge sounds like we have the same PT Grin Yesterday mine had me towing 500 m then run round the car park then 20 burpees then 40 cal on the assault bike then run round the car park then 20 burpees then 30 cal on the ski erg then run … I did get a 30 sec rest break after the burpees each time. He’s soft like that.

crispsinasandwich · 05/02/2022 16:23

@Haggisfish3

Carried on running after achieving my couch to 5k!
Me too!

I am much slower than you - about 10 mins per km. would love to get faster
Sidge · 05/02/2022 16:31

@LaChanticleer they sound very similar!

Recently mine had me doing this -

500m ski
50 sit-ups
400m ski
40 sit-ups
300m ski
30 sit-ups etc

I bloody hate burpees too!

Stellaris22 · 05/02/2022 16:46

My PT does something similar too.

Rowing of 500m, 300m, 100m and I have to wall sit in between in the time it took to row. Encourages you to be quicker!

Happyinheels · 05/02/2022 16:46

Am I allowed this? Today I joined a gym! I'm not a gym bunny at all but this gym is a small family run one and they have loads of classes. So I've signed up for a Hit class on Monday, I already do yoga on a Tuesday, another Hit class on Wednesday followed by a class called body balance, then Friday morning a kickboxing class! I'm nervous but excited. I used to be ok fit but then Covid hit, I'm self employed and a single mum of 2 and just hunkered down into survival mode. I'm feeling very unfit and am actually starting to feel my age of 46! I can't go back to running as I've got some knee pain so I'm really hoping this will help motivate me! I nearly went for the 45 minute outdoor boot camp instead of the hit on Wednesday but that was 15 minutes longer - figure I might be pushing it 🤣

LaChanticleer · 05/02/2022 17:09

@Happyinheels @happyinheels It sounds like a friendly gym with a good range of classes. I belong to a chain gym, because it's the closest with the best facilities, but in another city I used to belong to a privately-run gym, and it was fab. The proprietor was an ex-dancer, and she taught the best Pilates classes I've ever gone to.

ScruffyLittleTerrior · 05/02/2022 17:26

@crispsinasandwich @Haggisfish3 me too.
I started in March 2020 and have been religiously running 5k three times a week. I definitely feel fitter and I'm convinced my mood is happier.
I'm not any faster though!

persephone19 · 05/02/2022 17:45

I can nearly do a controlled tripod headstand in yoga. Crow > baby headstand > tripod headstand with tuck. Just gotta straighten those legs now.

JoyfulDay · 05/02/2022 18:03

@crispsinasandwich 7.5mins is my fastest tbh! I am happy around 8-9 mins. I don't think I will ever get faster, I'm just pleased I can do it as around 5 years ago, I couldn't even run 1km! Well done you for continuing to run after C25k. That's exactly what I did too!

NandorTheRelentlessCleaner · 05/02/2022 18:07

Well done everyone, love the buzz you get from pushing yourself 💪

This week I entered the men's league in my sport, asked the coach if the men would mind, they did not. Won my first match 😁

Will probably get killed in the next one though Shock

Can't win anything, if's not for that, it's just about trying to get better and challenging myself. I love stepping out of my comfort zone every now and then

JuergenSchwarzwald · 05/02/2022 18:37

This is going back a bit now but before Christmas my swimming teacher set us a "12 days of Christmas" session where we started off with one length of a stroke, then two lengths etc and built up to 12. I've never finished the session before (I think I got to the first length of the 11 lengths last time in 2019) but I finished it.

I do an outdoor fitness bootcamp session once a week and it has made a big difference to my fitness levels.

blobby10 · 05/02/2022 21:15

It’s wonderful to read about so many achievements! Keep going! My achievement today was going to the gym first thing rather than cycling as it was too windy- normally I would just stay in bed but today and tomorrow I will do something in the gym 👍🏻👍🏻😎

I cycled 3 miles (and back) to a work meeting. It’s not the most amazing athletic achievement but I could never have done this 6 months ago and I’m really proud of myself for having a go at commuting by bike - something I’ve wanted to do for years and always been scared to do.
