What exercise 'achievement' perked you up recently?

Mine was on Saturday when I went out for a road cycle - hadn't realised it was quite so windy and it was against me for the first 15 miles or so - had been up several decent hills and was about 5 miles from home going along a flat, straight road which is fairly exposed. Reader, it may have been slightly wind assisted but my speedometer reached 30.3mph!!!!! On the flat!!! For a couple of hundred yards!!.
Managed to sustain at over 29mph for several hundred yards! I was SO pleased with myself.

Anyone else got an exercise achievement they want to brag about? Grin

@xsquared 19 miles?!!! WOW!! That's a standard after work cycle for me - there is no way I could run even a tenth of that! You are awesome!!! Fantastic!!!

Just out of curiosity, in the amateur cycling fraternity , if you can cycle 40 miles you can do 60 and if you can do 60 you can do 100 - that sort of thing. Is it the same with running? I would assume much harder work anyway.................!

Hi @blobby10 ,

In terms of increasing distance, it was a gradual process, and I never thought I'd be able to run more than the 5 miles circuit I used to do twice a week until last year.

I gradually increased the distance every week and started using Strava. Now I am training for the Great North Run.

It must be the same sort of principle with cycling, if you can cycle 40 miles, then with further training, you can reach 60.

Many of the runners in the women's group started with C25K having never been sporty, and some are in Edinburgh today doing wither half or full marathon.

blobby10 · 29/05/2022 08:55

@xsquared the 'cyclists' (and I use the term in the loosest way!) I referred to are the sort who believe that no further training is required Grin x but I do understand what you mean. When I started cycling in 2017 my standard route was 16 miles. Now my minimum is 21 and I'm more than happy doing 30-40 on my own. My longest has been 89 miles and I'd love to break the 100 mile barrier this year - just need to find the right sportive so I know where the toilets are available Grin

Oh no. I believe my ability to go a bit further each time is down to endurance and strength training for longer runs. No, I wouldnot have attempted that distance if my longest had only been 5 miles.

I've been saying to my running friends I couldn't ever run a marathon, but that may change over the new few years, who knows!

MsMartini · 29/05/2022 10:21

@blobby10 ah yes, know what you mean - the negativity has taken a different form with me. It is great that on this thread we can share achievements of all types and levels 😀

CrimsonAlligator · 29/05/2022 11:12

This is no doubt a massive generalisation, but I think that some sports attract people who are way more competitive and into showing off than others.

I’ve really got into rowing over the last six months, but detest all the Facebook and Reddit groups about it, as they’re just full of people posting their incredibly impressive stats (and other people criticising those stats 😒). I’ve never seen anyone post the kind of stats I have, as clearly I’m either extremely slow in comparison, or normal people just don’t post stats…

I actually let it get me down for a little while, but then I decided that the only person I’m interested in competing with is myself and started a 12 week programme to improve my 2k time. I just finished week 6, which felt like a massive achievement in itself. Apparently to row a short distance faster, you have to start by rowing 1-1.5 hours a day five days a week. It’s hard work, but I’m determined to make it to the end. Even if I only manage to shave a few seconds off my 2k time, I’ll be celebrating! 🥳

MsMartini · 30/05/2022 09:02

@CrimsonAlligator totally agree. And it becomes a vicious circle - only fast runners share their stats on Strava etc. So us slower runners are doing a public service by sharing ours 😀

Stellaris22 · 08/06/2022 13:25

Exercise achievement today was getting to 100kg with my deadlifts.

GoodThinkingMax · 08/06/2022 14:07

Fist bump, @Stellaris22 Well done!

I've been hampered by COVID and a lot of travel for work. It's going to take me weeks to catch up

rubydoobydoo · 08/06/2022 16:17

I went out for a run on Monday planning to do 7 miles - felt great near the end and started wondering if I could beat my previous longest run on the Garmin app, amd I couldn't remember exactly what that was so decided to aim for 10 miles. Before I knew it I was in mile 11 and wondering what my current half marathon time is - it's 2:15 😁 I did stop after that though. Very tempted to enter an actual half marathon now as I didn't think I was up to it.

Did my normal 5.7 mile circular today and my legs still haven't fallen off!

Zazdar · 09/06/2022 09:39

Yes, @Stellaris22 Well done!

I caught a cold over a couple of weeks ago now, possibly the worst one I have ever had, and it’s really hit my exercise routine. I tried to pick it up again yesterday and went out for a run but had to cut it short because I felt so awful.

MsMartini · 09/06/2022 09:48

whooop @Stellaris22 fantastic.

@zazdar, I'm getting back in after covid - I've had a bad cold and covid twice (both mild) in last 3 months. I walk fast in gym kit, break into little runs in parks, to ease back in. And then run really slowly, with no distance in mind, switch off strava audio cues and enjoy the blossom sort of running. I'm a slow runner anyway but have found it is important not to de-motivate myself when building fitness up again. Hope you perk up soon!

blobby10 · 12/06/2022 07:35

My achievement for the week- I cycled 50 miles yesterday at an average speed of 16.5mph! That’s my expected 20 miles speed! It was fairly flat but there was a strong headwind most of the way (somehow!!) and several hills in the second half x

Got a new 10K PB just now of 46:51.

iloveeverykindofcat · 13/06/2022 14:16

Did 10 high boat to low boats in Pilates, properly, no shoulders touching mat. Absolutely killer. Actually said 'fuck me' out loud at the end.

MsMartini · 14/06/2022 08:31

That's the spirit @iloveeverykindofcat 😂.

shamoola · 18/06/2022 11:24

xsquared · 20/04/2022 21:42

Beaten my 1 mile PB - now 6:52, at a 3200m time trial.

well done - running fast for a mile is hard!
I'm following my Garmin Coach training plan to try and get my 5k time down and it just got me doing a 1 mile time trial. I managed 7:10 - which for me was good, but it was HARD!
goodness knows what I looked like - but it was hot this morning, my son was pacing me on his bike and the few pedestrians that were about had to scatter when they heard me coming! :)

YetAnotherNameChange52 · 11/07/2022 22:35

I'm doing a sponsored swim (5km in July for Great Ormond St). In my 50s, unfit, and obese, and I've just hit the 5km in the first 10 days. Very pleased with myself 😊

CryHavoc · 18/07/2022 11:43

Last week I got my first 50kg power clean - I've been stuck at 47.5 for weeks, so this really pleased me.

Fizbosshoes · 23/07/2022 11:13

This morning I felt really pumped getting my fastest parkrun time for 4 years. It was about a minute quicker than I was hoping for.

CrimsonAlligator · 29/07/2022 21:58

Today I joined the 1 million meter rowing club. I only started rowing in December of last year and still remember how hard those first few kilometres were. I’m not sure it’s got much easier since. I think I just got used to it 😁

shamoola · 20/08/2022 20:59

My achievement has been a long time coming and I'm trying not to bore people in real life.

I have been trying to drop my 5k run personal best and have been following a training plan for about the last 13 weeks.

Well today I managed it knocking 27 secs off bringing it down to 23mins 30secs.

I am very pleased with that and feel really proud of myself!

Haggisfish3 · 20/08/2022 21:06

Bloody well done!! I’m jealous-sub 25
mins is my goal. Really and genuinely well done. Must be a huge sense of satisfaction.

shamoola · 20/08/2022 21:20

@Haggisfish3 thank you!
I've been running for years and this is the first time I've done speed work once a week. It really makes a difference though pretty unpleasant when you're doing it!
