Christmas and the unvaccinated

Whathefisgoingon · 20/12/2021 18:23

Has anyone changed their plans?

DP and I fully vaccinated including booster. Two year old obviously isn’t.

Plan was to go to the in laws, but there will be a couple of relatives there who are not vaccinated and live in London.

I have voiced my concerns to DP but he became defensive saying it’s no different to me popping to the ships. It’s obviously very different because when I go to the shops I’m wearing an FFP2 and not sitting indoors for hours on end with others.

Anyway, I genuinely don’t know what to do. The obvious solution is for all to do lateral flows, but apparently with Omicron they can change within hours so they’re not that reliable.

If these relatives weren’t going about life in London as normal, I may feel differently.

Thoughts?

This is where it spreads and why we will be back in lockdown

Bad enough now but once Christmas mixing is in full swing I'm thinking cases will double with the daily updates!

LazyName · 21/12/2021 02:07

Going by the views on most of the Covid threads if your unvaccinated relatives did happen to have Covid they would be much too busy taking up the ICU beds to infect you, so you need not worry.

My personal advice is if you are worried then don’t socialise with people at the moment, vaccinated or not. I currently base my level of risk by how sociable people have been recently rather than if they have had the vaccine or not. I think that is sensible?
I am jabbed FYI.

olderthanyouthink · 21/12/2021 02:11

DP is double vaccinated and has covid, I am not and do not (so far anyway, been a bit over a week I think). You might give it to them.

Potatodrivers · 21/12/2021 02:14

Do what you feel comfortable with, but it doesn't matter who is vaccinated or unvaccinated when spending hours with people. They are all capable of spreading and catching the virus.

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 21/12/2021 02:15

It wouldn't bother me if they are unvaccinated.

StrongSunglasses · 21/12/2021 02:32

It would make no impact on me either. Unless they were vocal about not having it, then I’m not sure how I’d even know as I wouldn’t ask.

Both vaccinated and unvaccinated can catch and pass it on so it’s really irrelevant unless your concerns are for them?

Notdoingthis · 21/12/2021 02:43

'the unvaccinated'!

FurryAntiWaxer · 21/12/2021 02:53

Are you concerned they might catch Covid and take up a hospital bed that you need? Isn't that what vaccination is meant to stop?

ShinyHappyPoster · 21/12/2021 02:56

I don't understand. Do you know the vaccination status of everyone you and DH work with? You probably meet a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated people every day unless you are spending all your time at home. If neither of you work and you're both staying home all the time then don't go to Christmas. Otherwise it just seems like a passive aggressive attempt to get out of Christmas with your DHs family.

@Notdoingthis second your comment.

Mumsnet is a parallel universe sometimes

Pepperama · 21/12/2021 03:29

We'll lie low and not socialise this year as I'm not keen to find out whether vaccinations protect me from Long Covid. A friend has it and it's wrecked her life.

Youngatheart00 · 21/12/2021 03:34

The WHO have come out with some guidance around cancelling events so you could always quote that - some family might roll eyes but if they’re too pissed off they’ve got their head in the sand.

What’s wrong with ‘the unvaccinated’ - it’s factual?

MN is full of anti-vaxxers though, and this thread proves it. I would insist on negative LFT's and attend, but not feel entirely comfortable.
Curiousmouse · 21/12/2021 03:50

I agree @Youngatheart00 .

Get a grip!!

Croleeen · 21/12/2021 04:17

This makes no sense, as the vaccine doesn't stop you getting Covid. I should know, I'm triple vaxxed and I have got it. It's like mass hysteria has stopped people being able to think logically.

How many more times: The vaccine does not prevent infection, but it massively reduces the likelihood of severe illness and death.
RunningInTheWind · 21/12/2021 04:39

If you’re worried about giving your friends covid - why don’t you wear your fancy mask when you meet them? That way YOU are protecting THEM right?

That IS why you wear a mask right? Right?

it is so much this . so fed up of these pathetic threads that are cropping up lately about anti vax , i think op should cower away indoors even though shes had her vaccines that are meant to protect her and do the poor unvaccinated relatives a favour
LookslovelyinSpringtime · 21/12/2021 05:11

Another divisive finger pointing thread. If you yourself are vaccinated, why worry? If you get it you won’t get it badly. If you believe vaccines work. So why are you so worried?

LookslovelyinSpringtime · 21/12/2021 05:12

If NY is your priority, don’t go.

I think it’s bloody terrifying.

People calling for us to carry pieces of paper around which show if we’re worthy enough human beings to receive healthcare or participate in life.

What has happened to us?

mailpal · 21/12/2021 05:18

Vax or unvaccinated both groups still have same transmission from one another, just depends who doesn't have vax as to who gets the worst of it... I'd say go for it, open windows, be outside and inside, move about.. live your life without too much fear.. fear is winning at the moment, very sad to see.. it's like taking an airplane has risks, as does driving a car, just get on with it, live.

Eredoor · 21/12/2021 05:19

The unvaccinated bit isn't the worry though is it as you can catch it from anyone, vaccinated or not.
