Getting Ready to TTC baby #2 (anyone else want to join?)

We are gearing up to TTC baby number 2 and I thought it might be nice to chat to others in the same boat :)

I'm 35 and have a DS who is 3, planning on starting TTC next month. We've been on the fence about it for a little while, but I'm finally starting to feel a bit excited (and terrified!) at the prospect of a second baby!

@DaisyEM we might try to dtd once or twice this cycle without knowing when ovulation is but then put more effort into it next cycle. So not avoid it but the chances will be either incredibly low or non existent anyway.

Blue2020 · 18/05/2024 18:08

I’m not sure how I would feel about having a January-March baby. Mostly for an anxiety reason - we live high up and in the countryside, and when it snows or it’s icy it’s impossible to get anywhere. With ds he was born at the start of April but I had a few hospital stays while pregnant with him in February/March and one time we genuinely struggled to get home due to the snow. Dh’s tyres were just spinning getting on to the drive, and somehow he eventually managed it. Another time, luckily I was at home, and dh just abandoned his car a mile away. So it’s more just for that reason. I say all this but I won’t waste a cycle not trying. What are the chances it happens in a given month anyway?

Redapple21 · 18/05/2024 22:34

Hi all, we are also TTC number 2. I'm 36. DS is 20 months. This is cycle 2 but we are also trying a relaxed approach. It worked with DS and didn't take long at all but who knows this time ... definitely don't DTD as much now! Just trying to make sure we dtd at least once around ovulation time. I think my ovulation day was yesterday or today and dtd 2 days ago so feel like we're at least in with a chance. Have to wait and see! Good luck to you all xx

DaisyEM · 23/05/2024 11:30

@Blue2020 ah yes I totally appreciate this problem! We live in a rural area and our local hospital is a 45 min drive away, so I can totally get where you are coming from. I was induced with my DS so in a way that sort of took the anxiety out of a long car journey when in labour, but I'd be a bit worried about snow or something stopping us from even being able to get there at all too! Luckily DS was a July baby. Have you decided whether or not to give it a miss this month?

@Redapple21 its tricky fitting in DTD now as parents isn't it! I remember when we were trying for DS we would manage 2-3 days in a row around O, I think we will just aim for once as close as poss this time, and then otherwise maybe aiming for 1-2 times a week. But definitely not three days in a row 😂How are you feeling this week since O last week?

As a little update from me, I'm pretty sure I ovulated on CD 17 which was last week (I always O a bit late in my cycle). I'm not temping or anything, just going from EWCM and I seem to get a bit of an achey pelvis on O day. This is TMI, but we're not planning on starting properly TTC until next month, but as O day has passed we decided to stop using condoms (I'm not on the pill or anything) and DTD last night for the first time without one since DS was born! I don't know if it's because I'm not used to not using a condom now, but I've had what resembles EWCM today!? I'm guessing that's just from DTD last night. I'm CD23 so surely it can't be anything to worry about?😂It wouldn't be the end of the world if it was related to O of course, but we did agree that next month would be when we started trying.

@DaisyEM we have dtd once so far, I have no idea when ovulation occurs or it might have already happened. So could be lucky this cycle. I’m not going to track this time though and we only dtd rarely at the minute so the chance is very low but still a chance.

Redapple21 · 23/05/2024 21:19

@DaisyEM yes things are very different once you're parents! I'm using a tracker app to estimate ovulation and trying to dtd once in the fertile window. That's what we've done this month so let's wait and see. It's hard though as even though it's a small chance, it's still a chance and you do get hopeful in the tww. Trying not to symptom spot, especially as I'm only around 5 dpo (I think) ... it's definitely on your mind though even when you try and forget about it!

km9371 · 23/05/2024 22:23

Hi everyone!

I'm on cycle 2 of TTC baby number two. My first baby is 9.5 months old. I'm still breastfeeding and my cycles are all over the place so taking quite a relaxed approach.

We find it difficult to find time to DTD. Baby cosleeps and forages for danger full time during waking hours 😂

DaisyEM · 10/06/2024 11:13

@Blue2020 @Redapple21 how are you both getting on? Any updates at all? I imagine you're possibly both at a point where either AF has come or if not you've had a BFP?

@km9371 hi :) so sorry for the slow reply, we were on holiday last week and I was trying to not be on my phone too much! Oh i totally get the issue with finding it tricky to find time to DTD. Even though my DS just turned 3 I still mostly cosleep with him as he wakes several times a night still, so I totally get it.

Update from me - this week is my fertile window. I usually ovulate late (I'm guessing around CD17) and I'm currently on CD13, but have started to get EWCM this morning! I usually have it around 4 days so that probably makes sense, but DH goes away with work on what will be CD16, so I think DTD on the evening of CD15 will be the best bet. As I have EWCM already it's tempting to try for today, but I doubt we will fit in several tries in the next few days so maybe it's best to wait for another couple of days. Now wishing I had ovulation sticks so I knew what was actually going on 😂

@DaisyEM hi ... yes I got my bfp!! Can't believe it. We dtd 2 days after ewcm and that was it in the fertile window. I was feeling really low the week before AF was due thinking that won't have been enough. Just hoping all goes well now as it's early days. Sending lots of baby dust to you for this cycle xx

DaisyEM · 10/06/2024 15:19

@Redapple21 ahh amazing! Congrats. How far in are you now? And what cycle of TTC was this? Sure everything will work out for you :) This gives me hope as we can't DTD super close to ovulation this month, it'll be two days before, so at least it seems there should be a chance :) xx

km9371 · 10/06/2024 16:05

@Redapple21 congratulations!!

@DaisyEM I hope you had a lovely holiday! Sounds like a good plan to dtd before your partner goes away. Mine keeps talking about the football but I'm due to ovulate this weekend, no hun we're staying home and making a baby this weekend 😂

Redapple21 · 10/06/2024 18:39

Thank you @km9371 good luck to you for this cycle!

Thank you @DaisyEM I'm 5 weeks and a bit weeks, so still feels very early days. It was cycle 3. The first cycle we decided mid cycle to try, so I think we probably missed ovulation. So properly cycle 2. I've started feeling a bit nauseous this weekend which reassures me a little.

Blue2020 · 10/06/2024 22:38

Congratulations @Redapple21

@DaisyEM my cycle got quite messy. So just at the start of the fertile window (guessing because I didn’t track, just going by the cervical mucus) and then I got a very bad sickness bug/a bad cold and I was very dehydrated for 3-4 days after that. I think that was enough to possibly pause ovulation (back when I tracked I noticed after a sore throat it was enough to delay ovulation), so then a few days after I was better i started getting cervical mucus again. Frustratingly then dh caught my bad cold and he wasn’t in the mood to dtd. So I think we missed ovulation completely. Either that or I have no clue due to all the confusion. I think AF will appear in a weeks time, or maybe sooner.

Im not hoping for anything at this point. Slightly annoyed I didn’t track ovulation though just from the confusion of it all.

GoldieMam · 11/06/2024 06:22

@Blue2020 I’ve had a strange one too! Sounds like ovulation could have been anytime so you never know!

So last month AF arrived the day before I expected to ovulate. It was my first month off the coil so I think the period at the start of that month was perhaps a withdrawal bleed. Anyway, this month I have been tracking ovulation and I got a peak LH two days ago. My temp has risen a little today so looks like today/tomorrow is ovulation day today so @DaisyEM we’ll be in tww together I think!

I’m finding it so much harder to relax about it all this time around and I’m not sure why!

MintGreenLife · 11/06/2024 15:31

@km9371 haha love that! Sure he’s onboard with staying at home and DTD lots 😅

@Redapple21 ah that’s great news! Just goes to show it can happen quickly. It took us 8 months with DS1, I’m not sure why but I’m feeling quite optimistic about trying for number 2…fingers crossed!

@Blue2020 ah how complicated! And sorry to hear you were all under the weather. My cycle is always 29 days so I’m fairly confident of when I ovulate. I wasn’t going to track but I’ve given in to temptation and have ordered some ovulation sticks!

@GoldieMam yay for the positive ovulation test! I’m currently waiting for some to arrive having decided I wasn’t going to use them 😂 that’ll be nice to have a TWW buddy. Funny you say that about relaxing as I’m the other way round. I was completely obsessed when we were TTC DS, whereas I definitely feel a lot more chilled about it this time around. I’ll just do a few ovulation tests in the couple of days before I think I ovulate but otherwise I’m going to try my best not to obsessively google, track BBT, use preseed and take every supplement under the sun like I did last time 😅

Redapple21 · 11/06/2024 21:03

@MintGreenLife ah I'm sure your DS must be just a little older than mine (2 in September) as I recognise your name, I think I followed your ttc journey last time around! Wishing you lots of baby dust for number 2 xxx

DaisyEM · 11/06/2024 21:08

@Redapple21 ohhh I must be logged in on my old account on my phone, as accidentally commented under my old username 😅I don't have access to that email now so didn't realise I was still logged into that account elsewhere! I was super active on Mumsnet when we were TTC before, so it most likely was me! My DS is almost 3 😊

OP posts:
Redapple21 · 11/06/2024 21:11

@DaisyEM ha ha oh I see! Yes I'm sure it was you, I used to scroll Mumsnet a lot back then too and read everything 😂

DaisyEM · 11/06/2024 22:14

@Redapple21 I'm sure it was, that'll be such a nice age gap between your first and second then 😊I'm trying to not get too carried away with mumsnet and TTC this time! So am just sticking to this thread. TTC become all encompassing the first time round!

OP posts:
DaisyEM · 13/06/2024 10:46

How's everyone getting on? Yesterday was my only chance to DTD during my FW before DH went away, and thankfully we managed before DS had his first wake up for the night 😅I've had EWCM yesterday and today, but a negative OPK yesterday, so hoping for a positive today and that O day is tomorrow! Hopefully we are in with a chance this month

OP posts:
GoldieMam · 13/06/2024 10:52

@DaisyEM positive OPK for me on Sun and temp rose yesterday. Natural Cycles predicted ovulation on Tues so I’m 2 DPO and already loosing my mind 😅. Sounds like you’ve done all you can this cycle 🤞🏼

DaisyEM · 13/06/2024 11:10

@GoldieMam hurray for the positive OPK and temp rise. I'm not temping so hopefully I'm actually ovulating 😂for me this month is just guess work - I'm going off of when I usually get EWCM and when it usually disappears, which is why I'm hoping I get a positive OPK today as will mean I've guessed right and O should be today. Hopefully I won't be too far behind you and can join you in losing our minds during the TWW 😅two weeks feels like a very long time doesn't it!

OP posts:
DaisyEM · 13/06/2024 11:11

@GoldieMam p.s I did my first OPK yesterday, so I could very well have missed the peak anyway! Sort of wishing I planned ahead a bit better and started sooner...but I am meant to be trying to take a relaxed approach 😅

OP posts:
GoldieMam · 13/06/2024 11:14

@DaisyEM I was also meant to be taking a relaxed approach, oh well 😂. I was on the Mirena coil so this is my first cycle since I got pregnant with DS! I have no clue when I ovulate etc so actually the OPKs have been great! Also discovered I could use my Apple Watch for BBT so that’s been v handy. I deffo won’t last 2 weeks, will realistically test next Thurs 😅

DaisyEM · 13/06/2024 11:52

@GoldieMam ah fair enough! I didn't go back on any contraception once AF came back while I was BF, we decided to use condoms instead as I had been on the pill forever before TTC DS, and my cycles were all over the place for the full 8 months we were TTC. I didn't want to have to deal with that again, which has been helpful as means I have a regular cycle and a good idea of when I ovulate. Ahh yes I think you said before about your Apple Watch. I wish mine did the same but mine is too old sadly. I don't even know if BBT would be an option for me as I'm still up several times a night with DS.

Oh well from that point of view next Thursday isn't tooooo long away :) I got my BFP with DS on CD10 and actually had a very faint line on CD9, so waiting two weeks isn't always necessary! I was thinking I wouldn't test and would just wait to see if AF turns up...but you're making me reconsider 😂
