AIBU to expect my daughter’s auntie to ensure she gets home safely at 3am?

My DD who has just turned 18 is expected to get home by herself and her Auntie run pub. I’m talking about 3 o’clock finishes, in a national chain of pubs, in a rough area in city Centre Liverpool.

I was expecting her Auntie to drop her off when she had 3 o’clock finishes, but no she’s expected to walk up and get an Uber. I would give her daughter a lift home without a question.

I can’t say anything because myself and her father are split up and it would end up being a massive argument. I would be saying as a father, she should be dropping her off 😡

She's an employer though Im not sure most employers arrange their staff's commute, thats on the member of staff to support

There are some clubs or pubs that do taxis home, thats not across the board, many businesses simply cant afford that

There must be other people working at the pub. Can she make an arrangement with someone to walk her to the taxi rank/ Uber stop.

If it was a one off I may expect the auntie to give a lift, but not for regular, scheduled shifts.

With respect to, you can’t drive, so you wouldn’t.

Personally I would hate the thought of my 18 yr old granddaughter trying to find her way home safely after finishing work at 3 a.m.

When I was 18 I worked a second job in the evening at a Top Rank dance hall in the south of England and management made sure every staff member (& there were lots of us youngsters) were supplied with a taxi home.
That was in the late 1960’s & they had a duty of care to ensure all staff had a safe way of getting home because we finished work in the early hours of the morning.

OP - I hope your dtr finds a method of getting herself home safely. No matter their age, as a parent we will always worry about our children’s safety.

I wouldn’t expect an 18yo to get a lift home after work unless the aunt lives really close to the niece.

Concert Square is less than a 2 minute walk to Hanover Street! It's also bloody heaving at 3am most nights! My dd frequently goes out to Concert Square and manages to safely get home (whilst intoxicated) every time.

I'm not sure I'd class Concert Square as "rough".

Anyway, has your daughter handed in her notice and learned not to accept jobs where she's assumed she'll be getting a lift home, without so much as discussing it with the driver first?

I don't mean this to be insensitive, and i'm genuinely sorry to hear of your past health troubles, but the point we're all making is that it's easy to say you would do something, when you know it's not actually possible.

Would she better off looking for another job with hours that suit her eg supermarket, shopping centre.

It's not normal for the manager of a pub to take responsibility for staff getting home. Is she being paid on payroll for this job or is a favour?

I think it’s for your daughter to decide if she wants to do this job and get herself back and forth or not. She’s certainly old enough to decide for herself. Can’t imagine why you’d assume a lift would be given every single time.

It’s a very short walk from concert square to somewhere you can easily get into a taxi!

If you’ve decided it’s too rough for her to be there alone, why don’t you do what loads of people have suggested and get an uber to collect your daughter at the end of her shift?

Then you’ll be there ready and waiting for her.

As is the norm anywhere in town at 3am at the weekend! What do you think is going to happen to her in the 2 minutes it takes her to get to Hanover Street?

Your DD's aunt was decent enough to give her a job.

She's not responsible for getting her home.

She got her the job I assume? How is that not family being family.

I assume she only got the job because Auntie runs it.
It's tough for 18yos to get jobs currently so you can try pushing it, but I suspect Auntie will decide it's easier to have one of the loads of other applicants who aren't going to expect her to give a lift home.

Family are indeed family.

And some family members will always take the piss.

Are you going to acknowledge that your daughter should have discussed the possibility of being driven home by her aunt before accepting the job?

Or are you going to continue to ignore it?
