Friend mad because I sat down to have coffee

Please tell me if I am being BU or is she.

Made plans with two friends to go on a walk this morning. Me and one friend arrive on time, the other one is late. Neither of us had coffee this morning so we sat down in the nearest coffee shop and told our friend to meet us there. She arrives, orders coffee and food (this info will be important later) and after we go on the walk. Everything was completely fine during the walk, but when I got home I received a fuming message from her!

She said that we knew she was broke and that's why she wanted to go on a walk and it was really insensitive that we sat down to have coffee forcing her to spend money. I responded no one forced her to have anything as she could have just had water and that if I need coffee because I haven't had one this morning, it's unreasonable to expect I'm gonna give up having one because of her.

Her reply was that she felt forced to order something because the staff would judge her. I told her I used to work customer service so I can guarantee you they don't care if one person among a group of 3 does not order anything. Then I asked her if she is so broke, why on earth did she order coffee AND food?😂I got no reply.

The end really made me laugh😂

Bifty · 17/03/2024 15:59

She’s being a baby, isn’t she? Obviously she’s stressed about money, which is understandable, but wtf has that got to do with you having a coffee while you wait? And all that stuff about the staff judging her 🙄 Pure victim mentality. Everyone being so very mean to her and making her do things. Dear oh dear.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 17/03/2024 16:01

She's obviously got not will power but that is her problem not yours!

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 17/03/2024 16:02

Oh dear. I hope she reads this in DM and feels a bit ashamed.

Clarinet1 · 17/03/2024 16:02

I know what it’s like to have to count the pennies but I think what’s happening that she’s taking out her anger at herself for spending the money unnecessarily on you!

Oh lord, don't scare me with this ending up in DM😂

Her first initial isn't A, is it?

She's nuts.

She's annoyed at having spent money and then finding someone to blame rather than accepting responsibility.

DrJoanAllenby · 17/03/2024 16:04

How weird that in public she feels she has to be an utter wet wipe and buy drink and food because she fears shop staff would silently judge her yet has the audacity to be accusatory and downright o noxious to her friend!

I'd drop her as I can't be doing with idiots like that.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/03/2024 16:06

Very stupid of her, and makes no sense. Also it sounds like you only went for the coffee because she was late!

NoSnowdrop · 17/03/2024 16:07

If she’s your friend and she’s broke why are you using 😂at the end of your post? Seems a bit mean. Perhaps she was trying to fit in or thought you’d both already eaten before she arrived. I don’t think she was right to send you the text afterwards though.

SpringSprungALeak · 17/03/2024 16:07

Would you have gone for the coffee if she had been on time??

It's not 😅

If that was genuinely the case she would buy the cheapest thing she could- a tea, can of juice or something….not coffee and food! Or you would just take a seat with you and wait for you to finish. Yanbu!

Honestly, it's because she is always going on about being broke, but then literally 5 minutes later asks me to go on holiday with her next month? So I can't really take her broke claims seriously anymore!

Your friend was very immature. If I was short of money and couldn’t afford a coffee or food I wouldn’t tell everyone about it! I would have turned up with my pre-filled water bottle and made polite conversation until the two of you had finished your drinks. Also, if she is short of money she could have just ordered a coffee (or even a juice or coke can which would have been cheaper). Instead she ordered a coffee and food. I don’t know why she has told you about her financial difficulties unless she is hoping for a few freebies off you when you go out.

In that case, I would have still bought the coffee, but had it to go.
