(Preface by saying its a horrid evening with the news etc and I thought maybe a daft thread may be something someone could use)

Today walking around my little village I saw a man stop, get out a pouch of tobacco and give a generous (maybe a teaspoon, if we're going old school) amount to his golden retriever.
He looked at me, grinned and said, "he kicks off if I roll one and he gets nowt".
The lovely dog was looking chuffed with himself.
Now unless there is some unbeknownst health benefit to tobacco for dogs, that was lost on me.
Anyone else got something that's so fucking bizarre they'd not believe unless witnessed?

My aibu is
yabu - dogs love tobacco, you killjoy.
Yanbu - there is a reason we don't usually feed dogs tobacco.

Not bizarre as such but a family member used to give their dog their left over apple cores, another one gave their dog a piece of their chocolate when they had some and we gave out dog a saucer of tea quite regularly. I now know that all these things are actually poisonous for dogs, but it didn't seem to do them any harm probably because they were only having small amounts. I know someone else who used to give their parrot a daily cream cake - not recommended!

40 yeara ago, my family dog used to get a bowl of Super Tennants for a treat.

MaliciaKeys · 21/11/2023 18:10

My Yorkie likes a nice cup of tea, no sugar, in his water bowl. No-one in our house smokes so he's never had the chance of trying a bit of baccy.

SuperDuperCabriolet · 21/11/2023 18:11

My gran used to make her dog a bowl of tea and a slice of buttered toast every morning

He lived to 16.

Sidebeforeself · 21/11/2023 18:12

Once watched my exMIL throw a potato for her dog to run around with it in his mouth like a toy . Then when he dropped it she put it back in the veg rack. Never ate potatoes there again!

Mothership4two · 21/11/2023 18:12

Our old dog that had a daily saucer of tea was a Yorkie @MaliciaKeys - obviously something about that breed and very British!

Beryls · 21/11/2023 18:12

My dog loves a cup of tea. She's never shown any interest in my cigs though thankfully, I don't want her to try it then it becomes a gateway to future heroin addiction.

Our cat loves vegetables raw or cooked. The dog is quite disgusted

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 21/11/2023 18:15

Weird. I used to have two cats, one who loved angel cake and the other one loved cheesy Wotsits. Thought that was bad enough!

Mothership4two · 21/11/2023 18:17

Our old hedgehog loved garlic bread.

We had a siamese cat that would eat an ear of corn like a bone and soft plastic - she once ate a whole carrier bag.

Our cat went wild for sugarsnap peas and soya milk.

And you couldn't leave a pouch of tobacco open because he'd eat it.

My wouldn't believe it if you didn't see it was seeing a kid get fully hit by a car doing 30mph+ and all that happened to him was his shoe fell off

Bohemond23 · 21/11/2023 18:31

We always had to warn builders that our dog (border terrier) could hoover a cup of tea in seconds.

CoachPiggyStardust · 21/11/2023 18:35

My Grandma used to give her Jack Russell a saucer of tea and a custard cream biscuit every afternoon. Also once a week she had a KitKat and she'd break off a finger for the dog.

I once went to Aberystwyth to visit a friend, there was a woman in a wheelchair who had a full size sheep on her lap, the sheep was wearing a traditional Welsh hat and a nappy. Not only odd, I felt sorry for the poor sod pushing them both.

Cheesy watsits were my DCats all time favourite snack. Not that he got as many as he'd have liked, but he was allowed 2 or 3 if I was eating a bag. A couple of weeks before I lost him his appetite went completely and I was hard pressed to even get a sachet of lick e lix into him let alone any cat food. One night I had a bag of watsits and as soon as I opened the bag and held it near his nose he miaowed frantically until I held one out for him. Sadly though as eager as he was to eat it all he was able to do was lick the cheese coating off it.

My Nan and my great aunt both used to let their poodles share their cups of tea, the dogs would just have a drop and the women would keep drinking from the cups completely unphased. Went on for years, the poodles all lived to be ancient. The tea was always really hot, I'm amazed they didn't scald.

My dog loves apple! I had no idea it was toxic and he's shown no signs of ill effects so far. I feel terrible now. What else is toxic bar grapes etc and chocolate?!

Walker1178 · 21/11/2023 18:41

I had my elderly grandfather dogsit for us when we went on a short break. Got home 4 days later to find the bag of dog food I’d left completely untouched. Apparently he ‘didn’t like that shit I’d left for him’ and had eaten every meal with my grandfather - tomato soup with bread and butter, bacon sandwiches, faggots and pease pudding and full roast beef Sunday dinner. He also came home with a full bag of Tesco value custard cream biscuits because ‘he really liked those’

The custard creams were given to a local toddler group and our little terrier complete with tomato soup stained snout was back to regular dog food much to his dissatisfaction

MissPettigrewIsWFH · 21/11/2023 18:42

My horse liked Newcastle brown ale at Christmas

DixonD · 21/11/2023 18:43

My friend used to feed it to her horse as a “natural wormer.” No idea if there’s any truth in that. Never tried that myself!

Cosywintertime · 21/11/2023 18:45

I’m not sure I believe this, tobacco even in small quantities can be fatal to dogs, and if not will cause signficant internal organ damage.

Tobacco; and in very small quantities.

My old Great Dane LOVED popping candy. She'd sit with her mouth opening and closing hearing and feeling the pops. If she heard the shake of or rip of a packet she'd be in front of us in a heartbeat.
