(Preface by saying its a horrid evening with the news etc and I thought maybe a daft thread may be something someone could use)

Today walking around my little village I saw a man stop, get out a pouch of tobacco and give a generous (maybe a teaspoon, if we're going old school) amount to his golden retriever.
He looked at me, grinned and said, "he kicks off if I roll one and he gets nowt".
The lovely dog was looking chuffed with himself.
Now unless there is some unbeknownst health benefit to tobacco for dogs, that was lost on me.
Anyone else got something that's so fucking bizarre they'd not believe unless witnessed?

My aibu is
yabu - dogs love tobacco, you killjoy.
Yanbu - there is a reason we don't usually feed dogs tobacco.

Both my dogs have a cup of tea each morning. A cup - on the floor Yorkshire tea and milk.
whilst I have mine. Does them no harm what so ever and without it - they always try to snatch mine if I put it down but I go - this is yours Bee, this one is yours Bertie and this one is your Bramble and they drink them. 😂without them they would get a pout on. They don’t have their own mugs though.

Our first cat was obsessed with extra-strong mints. He'd fish them out of your mouth given half a chance..

i drive past a man walking a sheep on a lead everyday

in middle of town

I had a pet lamb who lived in an XXL dog crate in my bedroom til 4 months old. He had to be taken outside on a harness/lead because he ate stones off the gravel driveway if you didn't haul him past quick enough. Sheep are dumb as f*ck. Sadly he died at about 6 months and it was probably the stones he found in the field when he couldn't get to the driveway.

My Grandmother used to give our chihuahua tea in his bowl, and feed him soup (with a teaspoon 🙄). Spoilt little 🐶 lived 18 years.

I was early picking up my very old dog at my mum’s house today. They both looked surprised when I opened the door and found them sitting on the sofa watching a film on Netflix, and eating a cheese sandwich each. My dog’s sandwich was cut up in little cubes and she was hand fed by my mum.

At home my dog does not sit on the sofa and does not each lunch..

Long ago when we were joyously irresponsible, my friends had an alcoholic parrot. It was an African Grey, good talker, and hilarious when it was pissed. Wonder if it's still alive? It used to crash into walls if it drank too much. I can imagine it may have met a messy end but, as my friends said, those old ship's parrots used to drink all day and still lived to old age.

My fil believed tobacco stopped his dog getting worms so gave him a ciggie to eat

FizzyStream · 21/11/2023 19:01

My three childhood cats: one liked spag bol, one liked sweet and sour chicken and one like grated cheese. My current cat is also a cheese lover. My childhood dog went ballistic for raw carrots.

My riding instructors horse loves a brew out of a travel mug.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 21/11/2023 19:01

I'd have been less surprised if it was a beagle OP.

Back in the 60s, we had a corgi with a conveniently pointy snout for finishing up the dregs of cups of tea where they were left due to the tea leaves (I have no idea why we didn't use a strainer!).

Our guinea pig goes crazy when we have an Indian take away and doesn't stop yipping till we give her poppadom

GarlicMaybeNot · 21/11/2023 19:03

I can't tell you how much I'm loving these stories!

Mad dogs and English(wo)men ... and cats, sheep, guinea pigs, parrots ...

Apples are fine, it’s apple pips that are potentially dangerous as they contain a tiny amount of arsenic, I believe. But I think a dog would have to eat dozens of apples in one sitting before it became a problem.

My dog used to have an apple every evening - I did usually pick the pips out for her though!

Borborygmus · 21/11/2023 19:05

LakeTiticaca · 21/11/2023 19:06

Our old lab used to have tea and toast every morning, and anything she could get her jaws round 😁😁

Octavia64 · 21/11/2023 19:06

My first cat loved cheese and onion crisps.

Only cheese and onion crisps.

We tried him with a lot of
Other flavours which he rejected.

My dog loves apple! I had no idea it was toxic and he's shown no signs of ill effects so far. I feel terrible now. What else is toxic bar grapes etc and chocolate?!

Apple isn't toxic to dogs at all.

People get a bit silly about the fact apple pips contain tiny amounts of cyanide, but to access that cyanide the dog would have to eat an impossible number of apple pips, chewing each one properly.

The amount even available in a single core would harm no one and in any case dogs teeth really can't grind down apple pips anyway. So if you feed apple cores to dogs, you're fine, your dog is fine, no need to stop.

Chocolate, grapes, dried fruit (particularly raisins, sultanas etc), other very high sugar stuff, onions, macadamia nuts, various stones and pips from fruits - should all be avoided.

CaineRaine · 21/11/2023 19:14

I have no stories to add but am loving the image I have of all these dogs having tea in the morning ❤️

NancyPickford · 21/11/2023 19:14

I couldn't believe my eyes once when I was on a bus going through Tooting in South London, and there on the pavement was a man walking an adult Eagle Owl on a lead. My head nearly swivelled 180 degrees trying to keep him in sight as the bus moved on. I phoned the RSPB and they just said he probably had a license to keep it.

I once heard a snail make a noise.

Please elaborate, I'm dying to know what it sounded like 😀

Horriblewoman · 21/11/2023 19:14

I once heard munching in our kitchen when there was no food down for the cats.

came in to find one of them chomping her way through an avocado, skin and all.

They are both the least fussy cats when it comes to food. Obligate carnivores is absolute nonsense according to them. The other one enjoys licking a coffee mug when it’s just been finished and there’s a few dregs remaining.

AdultLounge · 21/11/2023 19:15

My little dog loved beer. If she heard the snap of a can pull she'd be right over begging. You had to give her it poured into a saucer, but she'd not drink it until you put your finger in and stirred away all the fizz.

She lived until she was 22.

CornTheCob · 21/11/2023 19:15

My dog loves Guinness and pork scratchings.
Every evening he has half of Guinness in his bowl and a bag of pork scratchings.
He's 11 and according to the vet, in perfect health.

Yeah, my dog is 15 years old and has been looked after by my mum for quite a few years. My dog had her own little plate for her cut up sandwich too, so I am really not convinced this was the first time tbh..
