(Preface by saying its a horrid evening with the news etc and I thought maybe a daft thread may be something someone could use)

Today walking around my little village I saw a man stop, get out a pouch of tobacco and give a generous (maybe a teaspoon, if we're going old school) amount to his golden retriever.
He looked at me, grinned and said, "he kicks off if I roll one and he gets nowt".
The lovely dog was looking chuffed with himself.
Now unless there is some unbeknownst health benefit to tobacco for dogs, that was lost on me.
Anyone else got something that's so fucking bizarre they'd not believe unless witnessed?

My aibu is
yabu - dogs love tobacco, you killjoy.
Yanbu - there is a reason we don't usually feed dogs tobacco.

Our very stupid bunny will consume anything the children drop - including ham sandwiches, sausage rolls, fries and her absolute favourite thing in the world - Poppadoms. She's 6 years old and in amazing health somehow.

Rabbits are herbivores. Their guts aren’t designed to digest anything else.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/11/2023 11:58

Consuming too much caffeine can lead to serious health problems for a dog.

The key words there must be 'too much', given the number of long-lived tea supping dogs. (Mine got to 16). Afaik no one is encouraging an espresso habit!

I was early picking up my very old dog at my mum’s house today. They both looked surprised when I opened the door and found them sitting on the sofa watching a film on Netflix, and eating a cheese sandwich each. My dog’s sandwich was cut up in little cubes and she was hand fed by my mum.

At home my dog does not sit on the sofa and does not each lunch..

That is just hilarious! I can picture it🤣

We were walking on a beach once with our dog and stopped for some flask tea. I gave her a bowl of water but she wouldn't touch it, which I found odd as we'd been walking for quite a while and she is usually thirsty with all her haring around. For a laugh I emptied her bowl and poured in some tea and she lapped it all up! She had almost half a small flask of it! Up to that point she hadn't ever asked for tea before and she was about 9 then.

My previous dog LOVED Heinz tomato soup and get in a mood if I didnt leave her any.

Current dog loves peas. No other veg. Just peas.

Partners dog goes nuts for poppadoms, cheerios and melon.

Ariela · 22/11/2023 12:30

We had a pony that would steal a cup of coffee if you left it nearby - literally stick a tongue in and slurp it down, unfortunately usually knocked the (tin) cup over too

stayathomer · 22/11/2023 12:33

I know nowadays we all know about chocolate being dangerous for dogs but a local lady used to walk home with her collie after getting her paper every day and he’d have a bar of cadburys in his mouth. She said he had to get it as his treat. He lived to be in his twenties!!

Tundera · 22/11/2023 12:40

Our old cat loved crisps. She lived to almost 20 so presumably didn't her any harm.

Amybelle88 · 22/11/2023 12:43

I have a beagle who loves a boiled egg in the morning 😂😂 also a cat who LOVES crisps - she can hear the rustling of a packet from two floors up!

Alwaysanotherwine · 21/11/2023 18:36

i drive past a man walking a sheep on a lead everyday

in middle of town

Got a fella by me who does this - he has two and a cat on a lead 😂😂

LOL sounds like our old mog was. For the last few years she appeared to be selectively deaf - she'd do things like just stop and sit in the hallway and ignore any attempts to chivvy her out of the way but open a pack of salt and vinegar at the other side of the house and she'd be there immediately.

LuvSmallDogs · 22/11/2023 12:58

As a kid I used to give the family dog grapes when I was having some, only realised they were poisonous as an adult. He used to get lots of leftovers that would contain stuff like onions too.

He had to be put down at 16, as his dementia was making his life hell (he'd become very nervous, and would fail to recognise us and become scared).

funbags3 · 22/11/2023 13:01

My nan gave me snuff as a child, whenever I had a cold.😝

PirateQueeny · 22/11/2023 13:03

We were staying with DH’s nana. She was in the kitchen making a gorgeous smelling fry up, our bellies were rumbling and our mouths were watering. After about half an hour, she came out with one plate filled with the works…and placed it on the floor in front of her poodle 🐩 🙄 We got toast.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/11/2023 13:04

We were once out walking and met a bloke with a rabbit on a lead. I thought I'd seen it all, but no... he had a cockatoo on one shoulder and a parrot on the other.

PirateQueeny · 22/11/2023 13:04

And then there was the cat that ate tinsel and had purple sparkly poo for about a week 😆

@Lochness1975 . I was once trying to pull right in with my horse for a lorry to squeeze past. Someone opened the door to the estate agents we were beside from the inside. So my horse helpfully stepped inside. I was on her at the time.

Fantastic! That one made me lol! Sat in the kitchen by myself!

I had my elderly grandfather dogsit for us when we went on a short break. Got home 4 days later to find the bag of dog food I’d left completely untouched. Apparently he ‘didn’t like that shit I’d left for him’ and had eaten every meal with my grandfather - tomato soup with bread and butter, bacon sandwiches, faggots and pease pudding and full roast beef Sunday dinner. He also came home with a full bag of Tesco value custard cream biscuits because ‘he really liked those’

The custard creams were given to a local toddler group and our little terrier complete with tomato soup stained snout was back to regular dog food much to his dissatisfaction

'tomato soup stained snout' - that made me laugh out loud! Grin

Our cat loves vegetables raw or cooked. The dog is quite disgusted

Years ago we discovered the hard way that the cat liked baked beans, OH's fault for going to the loo leaving his beans on toast unattended!

Tundera · 22/11/2023 13:15

Years ago dogs just used to get leftovers to eat, didn't they? I mean, they didn't have their own special food.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/11/2023 13:18

My rather...err... strange ginger cat used to love cucumber, and you couldn't leave one on the side without him trying to drag it away and eat it. He was caught trying to eat a swede once, but it appeared to defeat him.

My horse, when we used to ride to the pub with a group of friends, would always finish off my half of cider by sticking his tongue in the glass to slurp out the last bits. People passing by used to stop and take photos!

piscofrisco · 22/11/2023 13:19

Both my dogs snaffle tea at any given opportunity. And one of them is obsessed with raw carrot, but doesn't really like meat that much. The cat basically eats everything.

Weirdo

We once had a cat who was obsessed with ham. She could hear a packet being opened from the other end of the garden. Or smell it. Never responded to other plastic wrapped stuff being opened. She also knew the word “ ham” and would wake up and run into the kitchen if anyone whispered the word. We even tested her by saying “jam” or other one syllable words ending in “am” and she didn’t respond at all.
If I hadn’t rationed it because of the salt content, she would have wolfed down a load of slices.
She “stole” ham from the worktops if it was left unattended by mistake.

My cat loves ham too, but it has to be the really thin slices of shit value ham; proper thick, good ham she turns her nose up at!
